We could not have paid for this view of Kingston harbor that we have right now (see picture). Atop a dilapidated building in the throes of a city we've been repeatedly "warned" about, I can't help but reflect on the first few days of our stay here in Jamaica. I am amazed to the point of speechlessness at how much culture is in this city, when all I expected were resorts. Getting around in Jamaica is an adventure in and of itself. Our accommodations have placed us smack dab in the middle of nothing. Too far from Kingston to "wander", too far from the Blue Mountains to "hike" we surrounded by a very pretty ocean of banality—and sharks swim the waters between us and Kingston. We are hungry, but all the hostel has are bananas and ... read more

Right now baby an I are cooing and kissing faces. Before I fed him, I had to suck snot out of his nose because he couldn't really breathe and he has this awful cough...poor struggling baby. I was supposed to be in charge while the recent team of volunteers was here this week, so that he wouldn't be exposed to even more germies...so one day I held him in the cloth baby wrap from 8:something or 9AM until 10/10:30PM. Fabulous. I'm even holding him now as I type! I'm online so late at night right now because we haven't had internet at the house in a while, so I waited while Amanda got caught up on some of her internet stuff, and my turn began at 12:30AM, which I don't mind, since baby is in such ... read more

i had a day off on wednesday with amanda and julaine and we had so much fun! I GOT TO DRIVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE IN JAMAICA! ...from montego bay to negril!! what a trip that was...driver seat on the right side and driving on the left side of the road. i did super great. except for the time where i was doing a three point turn and when i had the car perpendicular with the direction of the road, i put the car from reverse to PARK instead of drive and a car was coming. haha. he honked at me. and it was funny. we went cliff jumping for free at rick's cafe in negril and it was suuuuper fun. as soon as i decided i knew i wanted to jump of the highest one, i just walked up ... read more

Already, it is SO much better than it was last night. The main person I was struggling with from yesterday, it seems, miraculously changed over night. I'm serious. We've been talking all morning, working on things together here and there. I FEEL like the cloud is gone/the weight has lifted. Last night, I meant to tell a couple of funny stories from the past two days... When we were returning from our day off, Julaine's rental car was puttering out...as my cousin Ryan would say, it probably needed more "transie fluid"...us girls had to try pushing the car up the curvy, ROCKY hill up to the house. It was a hilarious task, let me tell you. Finally, I went up to the house to get Sefton, who had just returned from night school and was sitting ... read more

just a couple quick things. picture this: -me with a cloth baby wrap and few weeks old baby neyo tucked up inside for HOURS last night. contentedly cooing and grunting in his sleep. -me sitting on the floor by a toddler bed with a big ol' three year old cuddling on my lap so i can pray for her before she climbs into bed ...only to start crying LOUD as soon as i walked out. -one of my girls being out of control causing trouble climbing on top of the fish tank. no joke. so i called her uncle who works here. but i have so much compassion for her. another girl knows how to push her buttons and she just gets so firey. but then she cries because even though she's the ring leader for ... read more

well then folks. i'm in jamaica. i'm getting back settled into the children's home. it just feels like such a whirlwind...all of the reuniting with the staff and kids i already know well, meeting the new ones...trying to soak it up and keep my head on my shoulders at the same time. some of it is impossible to put into words. like timar's face. how do i explain...? i can't update this thing right now. i can't really focus and blahhhhhhhhhhh there's a lot to say. here's what i've done so far: -stayed up until 5am talking with amanda, the other girl from america who is here for a three month stay. about life in general and life here at the children's home. -was given responsibility over the four oldest girls. ages 11-13. one is 12, ... read more

Hiya everyone! We have now left the wonderful Mexico to continue our travels to new countries. The last week was spent on the Yucatan peninsular which meant more sun and beach life than the previous weeks. We spent two days in Cancun before heading to Playa del Carmen which lies about an hour south. Cancun had really nice beaches, and we enjoyed our stay at the Mayan hostel, which more looked like a big hut than anything else. The resort however felt very touristy as a change from the other cities we had visited so far in Mexico, and that is why we chose to move on quite quickly. Playa del Carmen felt quieter than Cancun since there were mostly pedestrian streets and not as many crazy salespeople chasing you all the time. We found a ... read more

Wow, what a great place! Such friendly people the Jamaicans are! We flew down to Fort Lauderdale on a Northwest Airlink CRJ-200 and then caught a Spirit Airlines A-319 to Montego Bay. It was about 2 hours and $40 return by bus to Ocho Rios from there. One thing that I noticed right away is that the north side of the island was spared from Hurricane Dean. There was almost zero visible damage. After arriving into Ocho Rios and checking into The Silver Seas Hotel, we went to Dunn's River Falls. This was the best part of the whole trip. It costs $15 to enter and is well worth it. They have free changing rooms and a locker will cost you $5. There is also a nice beach at the base of the Falls. Climbing the ... read more

On August 20, 2007 we were officially sworn in as Peace Corps Volunteers. As many of you know this has been a life long dream of mine. Jim, good sport that he is, was willing to go along with me and commit two years to the unknown. We left Delray Beach on July 1, 2007 saying good bye to friends and family with a few tears and a lot of laughs. The farewell parties were great and we will never forget them. Natalie took us to Miami where we met our fellow travelers. We tried to compress our luggage into something manageable. This was unsuccessful so we paid the extra and took everything. The flight to Jamaica took less time than our drive to Miami from Delray. Little did we know what awaited us. The ... read more

´Jamaica, Jamaica.... Jamaica, Jamaica...¨ Ths country on the other hand I can't wait to re visit!! I have only good things to say about Jamaica... The people are beautiful, the accent is the BOMB, the food is amazing (especially the Rastafari cuisine), the music (reggae pumps EVERYWHERE), the smells in the air (yes I am referring to the smell of incense), the beer (Red Stripe) I love it, the list goes on... We had an amazing night (Sunday) the last night of Sumfest (the world's BIGGEST reggae festival), saw some amazing local acts and fortunately Beenie Man graced the stage (we had missed him on the opening night due to our flight stuff ups) which was unreal! We arrived around midnight and danced till about 7am. It really was mind blowing! The best festival night I ... read more
