We left the Marina yesterday morning. We have no sails, but opted to leave canvas on in case it was rough. We anchored in Prickley Bay close to Sea U Manana, Peter and Debbie and their sons Mathias and Joshua. We could see Lyman house from where we were. We met Paula and Dave, Prim Rose, for pizza and a few drinks at the Prickley Bay Marina. Prim Rose is med style moored. It is rather complicated for them to get off the boat. They do not have a boat ramp set up. The usual problem for us American boats. Peter and Dave came over this morning around 1000 to help us with dinghy and canvas. We removed all the canvas and hardware and going to canvas shop for restitching. The seams are all coming apart. ... read more

We are going to attempt to describe marina living in Grenada. 1st off, showers have no water heater, but then it is so hot, who needs it. 2nd dryers? What is that word? Oh yeah, that is the thing a ma jig that suppose to dry clothes, forgot what it was. Well check pics out, Pete did a superb job of installing a brand new dryer for Maribel on the deck of Paper Moon. 3rd, bars? hmmmm, well yeah, bar in marina, with excellent rum, Clarkes Court Bay rum, love the dark, with coke of course. Beer well yes, we have beers in the afternoon while playing dominoes, either Mexican, chicken foot or 84's. Saturday nights there is a pot luck dinner, where all the cruisers in the area are invited, then Karaoke follows. Much singing ... read more

From this date to July 26, we spent it at the marina. We made several road trips in different directions, with cruisers. We basically saw the whole island. Our driver and tour guy, Cutty, does a fantastic job. He kept stopping to show us a plant or spice. Found out the Callilou is the leaves of the Name (this word has a - on top of the N) (can't figure out how to do it on this laptop). Basically they eat the root, they eat the stems and leaves of this plant. The leaf has a purple dot in the middle. This is how you recognize them. They call Grenada the Spice island, and it sure merits this name. They grow saffron, nutmeg (most trees were destroyed during hurricane Ivan in 2004, some are coming back), ... read more

West Indies 2007Richard P. Johns Hi Friends and Family, I didn’t manage to get my travelblog up and running for my vacation this year but so many of you have asked me for photos and a description of the West Indies that I decided to post a belated blog. I left from Vancouver, Canada on June 22. I went straight from work to the airport with my small knapsack in tow. It’s a very free feeling not to have to lug a backpack or suitcases around (I guess that’s why they call them luggage). I had three legs of my flight to the West Indies. I stopped in Calgary, then Toronto and finally in Trinidad. I got of the plane in the early evening and went about checking that the guesthouse in my Lonely Planet guide ... read more

0530 hours came awful early. Pete went forward pulling the anchor. Went around the South Point, this is where the medical college is located. As soon as we went around the point, the winds went to our nose gusting to 35 miles per hour and the further we went the higher the seas became. We think we started with 5 footers, but by the time we arrived at the turning point the seas were chopped and 9 to 10 footers. Even though is only about 7 miles, it took us forever since we could not get any speed up, and of course we were motoring, no sails. Sea Schell was behind us having same difficulty. We averaged 1.5 knots on this trip, taking so many hours of beating conditions. When we arrived at the turning point ... read more

At 0900 hours we were in the Grenada Yacht Club. This is where Customs and Immigration office are located. Is just a hop and a skip from our boat. The fees were $25 US or $66.20 EC. We paid in EC money. There is a VHF cruisers net at 0730 hours, which we listen to, finding out that Island World Chandlery has a coffee, book and video exchange this morning. So off we were for parts unknown again, another dinghy dock we spotted in front of the chandlery. We found out there is a 38 per cent duty tax at the chandlery, so we gave them a copy of our documentation and cruising permit, this will exempt us from the tax on any purchases. We did book exchange and spoke to cruisers, some we had not ... read more

We arrived in St. George July 3. We were heading for Tobago Cays this morning, when Maribel went below to listen to Chris Parker. Well dang, Chris changed his mind from yesterday's forecast. Chris said this is going to be a tropical depression, and everyone should be in a safe anchorage by Wednesday night. So we did a 180, headed for Mayreau, then Union Island in order to check out from the Grenadines. After anchoring in Union Island, a fellow sailor offered to give Pete a ride into dinghy dock, so we didn't have to drop ours. According to Pete, it was a short 5 minute walk. No checkout fees. We left Union around 0930 hours. We spoke on the VHF with Sea Schell, who was ahead of us, Harry told us he hugged the coast ... read more

So our plan for today was to take the ferry to Carricau (spelling??) and spend yet another day relaxing on the beautiful white sand beaches, however it proved to expensive and was cheapert o hire a car for the day. It pays to know the locals as our now good friend Max hooked us up with one of our many contacts who gave us a car for the day for $70 NZ - bargain. With Dan behind the wheel and four girls slightly squashed in the back we hooned (the only way they drive here) around most of the island in one day. Poor Ron stayed behind as he has got some crazy allergy (we think) and had been at hospital the night before but they were useless. He is much better today as i am ... read more

Well some of us made it to TV3 news if anyone was watching the day after the cricket. Dan and Ron are making some very switched on statements towards the end of this clip about the cricket result, they are the two drunks in black singlets. I think the rest of us may be visible walking past in the background when the two beige brigaders are being interviewed but cant get a high enough resolution screen here to check it out properly. If you missed it heres the link: http://www.tv3.co.nz/Home/Video/Display/tabid/266/articleID/25535/Default.aspx?src=email#vidlist25535 cheers to dan's family for pointing it out and his mate at TV3 for making it happen :) three days left in grenada, the boys have hired scooters today and are doing the island that way and the girls have just all had 1/2 hour swedish ... read more
