Last time we communicated with you we had just arrived in Luperon in the Dominican Republic. As you may be aware this is a very large island made up of very impressive mountains. It has had a very interesting history that the United States has been very involved in. Both Janice and I feel like this is our first truly foreign port of call. Up to this point all the countries we visited English was the common spoken language and European culture mostly prevailed. DR, as it is commonly referred to around here is a lush tropical island with abundant rainfall and productive agricultural and industrial development. The country not only feeds itself but exports to much of the Caribbean. Luperon is in an isolated bay hidden behind a number of high cliffs and impressive mountains. ... read more

Freitag, 8.

We left the Bahamas! On March 23rd we left the safe harbor of Georgetown with 2 other buddy boats, “Happy Times” and “Sea Yawl Later” for a 35 hour “cruise” to Betsy Bay, Mayaguana. This is an island in the eastern part of the Bahamas that we needed to get to in order to make our jump off for the Turks and Caicos. So what is a buddy boat you ask? It means different things to different people, in our case we arranged to call each other every hour on the VHF radio to exchange coordinates (latitude & longitude). We did this for a couple of reasons, first it's a safety issue, because we can't see each other at night knowing someone's longitude and latitude could be helpful in case of an emergency. Secondly we create ... read more

This has been a long years wait to come back here, this time on the southside of the island! I managed to catch my flight on time from San Jose despite my driver getting into an accident on the way to get me in the morning, I hopped in a cab and to the Airport I went. I was a little worried that the "new" law had kicked in for expired visas, but my friends Debb and Ryan just crossed over by land to Nicaragua and Ryan told me not even a second look as he was over by a month, I would be over almost 2 and at the airport....So I get out of the cab, spark up a kool and look one last time at the Mountains surrounding San Jose I head in to ... read more

Samana, Dominican Republic I awoke to a cloudy sky. By 10 am the when the tour started it was pouring. The rain stopped as we boarded the tender. At the pier our group boarded the catamaran and Wellington, our guide promised sunshine in a half hour. Evidently he has a long line to the weather god as the sun came our and we had a beautiful day. We sailed along the coast and Wellington pointed out the various resorts and small villages that line the coast. Fishing and farming along with tourism are the main economic activities. DR also fosters and trains promising young baseball talents and the major leagues have profited. We sailed/motored to a small offshore island. I was second into the warm water and headed to the rocky shore. The bottom was mostly ... read more

Turks and Caicos … NOT We had a surprise sea day. The winds were so strong that the Captain decided not to try to navigate the narrows. There was no way we could dock and a tendering operation was out of the question. The winds would not let the ship to maintain a safe position away from the reefs. Headed for the aft pool, found a lounge chair and read for about an hour. Then a do it yourself taco, nacho lunch and a restful time in the shade on the Promenade Deck and decided it was time for a nap. Found the message light on and needed to see the Front Desk. Straightened out a credit card problem, returned for my nap and had a message that the casino would be running a Hold ‘em ... read more

We are about to step into one of the poorest countries in the Caribbean, if not the world, and we are advised not to eat or drink anything ashore. The brochure says:" If its untouched Caribbean you're after, look no further." Yes it is extremely beautiful and the people very friendly but one can't help feeling uncomfortable confronted by such poverty having just left our luxury cruise liner. We swim in the El Limon waterfall. To get to it we have to navigate a tricky path followed by some giant stepping-stones. One over-endowed woman cant make the jump across and sits down on a stone thus blocking the way for the rest of us. We have to navigate around her. No matter we all make it in the end and the water is refreshing after the ... read more

This is the day we start the Mona Passage. For those of you not familiar with the area, it is the body of water between the eastern end of the DR and the western end of Puerto Rico. It has a reputation for being a difficult body of water due to currents moving from the Atlantic side (north) to the Caribbean (south). When these currents are combined with strong prevailing winds, one can expect big seas and uncomfortable conditions. We have reviewed every weather resource we have available and all predict milder than usual winds and seas. So we are off and will be on the southwest coast of Puerto Rico tomorrow noon.... read more
