Blogs from Dominican Republic, Central America Caribbean - page 11

The blog post really deserves more than one entry. The Dominican Republic was, for me, two experiences. One of culture, and one of convenience. And it is confirmed, I will take culture anyday over unlimited buffets and an open bar. Andrea and I spent half our Spring break trip in the capitol of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo, pretending we were NY times travel writers and we were researching our previous article title, "36 Hours in Santa Domingo" . We followed our guide to a T. Somethings were now closed or lacked their previous allure, but overall it was a perfect guide to a few days in the country's capital. The food was amazing. Andrea with her mastery of languages sweet talked every waiter in to giving us the non-tourist special. So we were treated to ... read more

I found Las Galeras on the Samana Peninsula of the Dominican Republic to be a great location to land for a week and de-stress during our spring break. The beaches there are amazing and not crowded and you can get around the area without needing a car. In fact, most of your transportation will be by boat if you are going mostly for the beaches. Having never been to the Caribbean I didn’t know exactly what to expect, however I found many similarities (and some interesting differences) from my other travels in Latin America. After doing a bit of homework and talking with a friend who had spent some time in the DR I think I made the right choice of where to go. During my first full day in the country I met a couple ... read more

For the last two years, my mother and I have traveled to Peurto Plata in the Dominican Republic. Although I hate staying in hotels, especially all inclusive.. that is where we have ended up for the last two years.. and we will again this March. The only reason that I am always so excited to go back is because I am so in love with the people and the country. We have been taken all around Peurto Plata by our good friend Andenson, (my future husband & my love at first sight victim. lol) and ever since then.. I have truly felt that Dominican is my second home. I really enjoy it there. Not only are the guys totally attractive.. but the country is just so unbelievably perfect. I love it! I can't wait to go ... read more

Aged 12, I was offered the holiday of a lifetime, to venture into the Caribbean with my family, on an experience in which will remain in my memory for the rest of my life. The sheer excitement of boarding an aircraft, and listening to the engines roar from London Gatwick- Punta Cana, truly established a true interest to me. Since this experience i embrace cultures and love to gain an understanding in the way us in the UK take many things for granted. As we glided down to Punta Cana airport, the collaboration of fear and excitement penetrated my body as the wheels of the aircraft touched the runway. The one memory of this moment was that exhilarating moment when the airhostess opens the cabin door, and that gush of moist warm air, swarms past your ... read more

I must preface this by saying that there are many things I like about this country, however there are several things that I don’t like and even detest about this country. As I have already mentioned before, the cuisine here is very very average. Basically my biggest problem with this country is that they eat things here before they mature. And honestly it just boggles my mind, I just say in my head why in the fuck would I eat that. For example, why would I eat green bananas or plantains? Nature is telling me that they are not ready to eat. They are fucking GREEN! And of course viveres (any starchy vegetable such as green banana/plantain, yucca, squash, etc), who wants to just eat them plain after you just boil them. I can’t believe no ... read more

Resumo: Praias Maravilhosas (recomendo!); Pessoas super amigaveis (vontade de abracar todo mundo); No ultimo dia de viagem: encontrei um lugar que eh a minha cara!! Estou bem. Snif. 3a parada: Sosua - praia pequena mas lindissima. Quando cheguei neste lugar ... read more

A Neighbor, Hipermercado Olé LA RUBIA La Rubia lives across the street in a small pink wood house with a galvanized tin roof and sells chicken every morning. She is tall, lean, strong and perhaps in her fifties with a gauntly aged face and is missing her top front teeth. She builds a fire outside where she boils a big pot of water to scald the chickens for plucking after cutting their throats. She rinses them with water and covers them with plastic bags, hangs a scale from a tree limb and sells the poultry for about 15¢ more per pound than Hipermercado Olé, the nearest supermarket. Usually she wears jeans when she prepares the poultry but if she has just gotten home from the disco or been dropped off by one of her chulos, she ... read more

The Beginning La Primaveral de Villa Mella, where we live, is on the outskirts of the city of Santo Domingo about 9 kilometers up Maximo Gomez as far as the blue water tank on stilts and then our house is a 1 kilometer walk or a 10 peso per person ride on a Honda 70cc Cub Special motorbike away. When we use such a concho Altagracia rides sidesaddle in the middle pressed between me and the chauffeur. From our roof we can see mountains, and our street, Loma de Chivo, which was asphalt at one time but now is mostly paved with dust, is virtually a dead end as it narrows to a dirt trail near a stream a few blocks beyond our house. There are a few big houses like ours with three bedrooms and ... read more
