Though there is not a great hostel network in the DR, here is a no frills hostel located in the safe neighborhood of Gazcue in Santo Domingo:
Located on a residential street, this hostel is the cheapest that can be found in the city, and therefore not the classiest. The shared bedrooms have fans, which help scare off swarms of mosquitoes. Some private rooms have A/C and occasionally hot water. There is a common area with a TV where guests will often find Peace Corps Volunteers and the occasional traveler congregating, but other than that, this is a place strictly to rest your head at night.
RD$275 per bed or RD$1200 and up for private rooms; C/ 201 Cayetano Rodríguez at C/ Juan Sánchez Ramírez, Gazcue, 687-6037
Safe travels!
