We crossed the border from Nicaragua by foot as the sun was going down. We had a brief discussion with the sleepy border guards and then waited for the public bus. Immediately it was evident we were no longer in Nicaragua. The buses were more modern and comfortable, the roads were smoothly paved, people had to wear masks in indoor spaces. When we got to the small village not far from our auberge, the Cabañas Castillo, we descended from the bus and started walking the the twenty-minute hike with our big bags. We didn't have to walk for very much longer until someone stopped for us in an air-conditioned sedan and offered us a ride. We gladly accepted. As they dropped us off, they gave us their phone numbers and said if we needed anything, just ... read more

I read somewhere that you should scare yourself once a day.... well, at Salinas Bay in Costa Rica I got a years worth in 2 days.... We came north from Guiones on the Nosara coast to cross the border into Nicaragua. As Salinas Bay was conveniently along the way, it would've been unforgivable not to stop off and check out the legendary kite surfing destination with its famed white sand beaches, turquoise blue water and consistent wind (sixth windiest place in the world, according to the locals), in a massive bay that stretches across the Pacific coast border of Nicaragua and Costa Rica. The drive north from Nosara showed the contrast that is modern Costa Rica. It commenced as more delightful Nicoya Peninsula - rough dusty roads round sandy headlands, stunning secluded beaches, dry tropical forrest, ... read more

Amai, ... read more

Alright final week.... So I did decide to head to Playa Gigante I almost convinced Lauren to come for a day or 2 but she didn't want to have to deal with all the buses and walking in. I wound up missing my 12:30 bus from SJDS to Rivas because it left early then the 1pm bus left super late so I was worried I was going to miss the last bus out towards the beaches but luckily I just made that one. I got off at the intersection and started hoofing the 5/6 km to the beach. I got a couple Kms in and a construction truck filled with sand and cement bags slowed down enough for me to hop on the back with some local school kids and a couple workers. The kids and ... read more

Here I am … in Costa Rica … third time this year. Why you’d ask? Well, since I thought I would go to Nicaragua to volunteer for three months, I left my backpack with a lot of crap in San Jose and had to go back and get it sorted out. A lesson learned: “Don’t think you will stick to your plan when you travel. You will always meet someone or decide to do something more exciting than you thought you would.” I almost thought the voyage back to Costa Rica was a waste of time and money if not a four-day trip with my dear Mexican friend Mar to La Cruz, salsa en la calle and getting my life a bit organized. So far La Cruz has been a cherry on a cake of Costa ... read more

We got the rv all figured out, it turns out we needed a new coil. With this replaced, the test drive worked, so we said our goodbyes again, and headed for the boarder. We stayed the night in Conception and crossed in the morning, quite easily, and much quicker than when we entered panama. The rv was running great, until about lunch time, when it started to sputter, and decided to quit. There were lots of nice Ticos who came to our aid, and eventually, they found the mechanic we needed, one that knew something about carborators, and eventually got it running enough to drive up the road to his shop. The guy took our carb out, gave it a good cleaning and then put it back in. It worked brilliantly. The next day we continued ... read more

I got up early, packed, and headed to the bus stop. I had heard that if I could get to Liberia, a short 5 hour trip on the local bus, I would be able to get a bus to Nicaragua. After a very trying 5 hours I arrived in Liberia and made my way to the hotel that would sell me the ticket to Nica. It is hot. I´m wearing jeans (which apparently don´t fit me), and a heavy pack, and attempting to "frogger" my way across a 5 lane road that has no obvious traffic signals. I made it, but quickly determined that the hotel did not sell tickets and I would have to make my way back across the highway to a small restaurant to get the tickets. I managed to make it to ... read more
