“I can’t Belize the bus has broken down!” And so began our journey into beautiful Belize. With a name like Belize its hard not to try and insert it into every possible sentence. It has such a faraway, exotic sound to it, it really is hard to Belize you are in Belize when you finally arrive in what was once known as British Honduras (but got a kickarse name instead - for more information on the problems with Honduras see my earlier blogs). well we made it to tikal after spending a couple of nights in san ignacio. Tikal is right up with there with some of the most amazing places that I have seen in my life. The spread of buildings involves 6 major temples, the tallest of which shoots into the sky at well over 200 ft. Although the temples are incredible it may be the setting that truly makes Tikal so special. It is crazy to walk through the dense jungle and suddenly.....BAMN there is huge temple in front of you. It just smacks you in the face. Then you travel down the trail and .....BAMN there´s another one. Monkeys - Tikal is just flush with them. Mostly squirrel monkeys that you see swinging from tree to tree but it is the howlers that you hear. ... read more

(sorry it's a bit of a long one) Wandering around Belize City, it's surprisingly hard to find anything you want. For example, finding a tourist information place was an hour's quest that eventually failed, all the places having moved countless times in recent years so that not even locals know where they are. Nevertheless, although slightly irritating from a personal perspective, this is a prime example highlighting what a dynamic and vibrant place this small city is, and one that is constantly developing and changing. After spending about 30 hours travelling (and what felt like a similar length of time sleeping once here), from Toronto, through Houston's "we do not take highly to persons joking about any act of security. I'm finding my final morning here to be quite sad - I wish I had a month. I'm not at all ready to leave. Well - my feet are ready - I've never had such horrible blisters in my life - at least 3 on each foot. At least I'm getting on a boat where I won't have to wear shoes. Last night found us bar hopping. Janneke, Warren, Alex and I went to the Ocean Side Bar & Grill to meet Barbara. Janneke and I each had a rum runner - huge, fruity, and way too much rum. We played darts, then Janneke, Warren and I went to Herbal Tribe for guacamole and cuba libres. Then rejoined with Alex and Natasha and headed off to the I and I. LAX This is by far my boldest trip yet. One week. No traveling companions. No lodging pre-booked. Tme to see how I do thinking on my feet and just exploring. And relaxing. I can't wait. I think that I've been so busy for the past few years pursuing my career that I haven't bothered to stop and pursue adventure. That being said, 30 is not all that far off, and I need to start accomplishing all the fun, adventurous things I can before life manages to tie me down further. My only real goal on this trip is to experience new things - places, people, foods, activities. I think that Belize holds a lot of promise for that.
