We had been told that it was possible to make it to Caye Caulker from Tulum in one day; it was a full day of travel and everything had to run like clock work i.e. bus connections, smooth border crossing, minimum pee stops etc. Nae bother. The only concern was the border crossing as we were told that you had to pay a departure tax at the bank before getting to the border check point. If you hadn't, you need to travel back to nearest town to pay which was two hours away. We had many frustrating attempts to pay this tax at various banks - all with the same conclusion: "Sorry you don't have the right documentation". "¿Que? But that's all the documentation we have?" d.1-5 april Fra Xcalak tog jeg bussen til Chetumal hvor jeg havde en enkel overnatning. Derefter en bus til Belize City og derfra en watertaxi til Caye Caulker... Bookede ind paa Tinas backpackerhostel som ligger lige ned til vandet. Skoent! (dog ret beskidt men hvad, er man backpacker eller backpacker ikke!!?) Her moedte jeg to ret sjove gutter som jeg hang ud med, Ben og Ross. Fik dykket en hel del der og ja selvfoelgelig ogsaa The Blue hole. Selve dykket der var ikke saa overdrevet spaendende men tilgengaeld saa vi kaskelothvaler paa turen hjem fra dykket!!! de var helt taet paa baaden og man fik bare lyst til at hoppe i...det var virkelig noget af en oplevelse! We have decided to stay on here for another day....it's relaxing and friendly place to be! And, as you can tell by now, a hard place to leave... Today we took a boat trip to another part of the reef and then on to Ambergis Caye..this island is really built up now..full of cars and people (50 thousand in the main town) and shops and hotels...It's much nicer here! Snorkeling today was good..we saw a giant "ball" of fish all swimming together.. a moray eel, a giant lobster, and spiny black sea urchins..along with the usual colorful fish and coral. We've been watching some of the local TV programing, and we're really impressed with the initiatives to bring tourism and protect the environment... We are in the midst of a cold front, believe it or not....Everyone who lives here is freezing, and we had to ask for blankets last night! It was warm enough to go kayaking this am, but tonight is cool and rainy. We moved to a less expensive hotel today, away from the beach... It is near a school, so I'm attaching photos for the kids! The next day: It rained hard all night....! Today had a few sunbreaks but was windy..so still no snorkeling or swimming... But it is warmer now... We went jogging this am, since it was cool enough, and explored more of the island on bike (they come with the hotel...)this afternoon. Finally made it to vacation! I got off the boat yesterday around noon and headed out to Caye Caulker. Which is a little island about a 45 minute boat ride from the mainland of Belize. I am staying at a hostel here and have met a couple of real cool people including a couple from Holland, Tony and Katie from Minnesota, and a group of girls from Australia. I will be traveling to the Cayo district in a few days to visit some friends who just opened up a resort there. Gotta go, more to come... read more
