After we got ourselves and the boat back in order, it was time to enjoy being back in the Bahamas. The Berry Islands have always been one of our favorite places in the islands to visit. The people are friendly, the anchorages and beaches secluded, and the natural beauty and fishing abounds. Great Harbor is the biggest settlement in the Berries and has quite a friendly and tight-knit community. We spent our first couple of days there just relaxing and taking it all in. We walked across the golf-course to the beach on the other side of the island. It is a very beautiful, half-moon bay with white sand and crystal clear, gin colored water. As you look out you can see the reef, which appears as dark blue and black patches amongst the turquoise. We ... read more

I have a new job and it is taking me to the Bahamas for the winter. It is going to be tough running a boat in the bahamas all winter but someone has to do it. The first order of business i getting the boat to the islands. On tuesday we left Carolina Beach before sun up and headed out to sea. We made it to Charleston SC by lunch time, we had alligator tail and cheeseburgers from Salty Mikes. We fueled up and headed out and made it to Hilton Head that evening. We had a great dinner at the Crab Shack and we crashed out before nine! We woke up and got underway before sunrise and made it to St. Agustine for lunch and we fueled up and headed out for Cape Canaveral, Fl. ... read more

We left Florida to set sail for the Bahamas; the boat was ready, we were fully provisioned, and the weather looked good (at least according to NOAA). But weather predictions are just that, predictions. It was supposed to be 10-15 knots from the west in the afternoon, dying down to 5-10 by the evening, with only 2-4 foot seas. So the wind and waves would be on our back quarter and turn light and variable by the time we would be crossing the Gulf Stream. Perfect- right? Wrong! When we left Ft. Pierce just before noon it was already blowing 20 knots, but we figured it was just a local effect from a nearby cloud and would die down as we continued south. So we kept going. The wind then picked up to 25-30 knots, from ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Bahamas » Exuma » Georgetown December 19th 2007

December 17th, we arrived in Georgetown, and are looking forward to enjoying Christmas here. Our son Steve, and Sharon’s sister Patty will join us in Georgetown, and we are very excited to see them! After arriving in the Bahamas November 30th, we cleared in at Port Lucaya, and stayed there for a couple of days. Port Lucaya was very nice but we were anxious to get further south. We headed for the Berry Islands, and anchored for a couple of days at Great Harbour in Stirrup Cay. Stirrup Cay is where cruise ships take passengers for “a beach day on a deserted Island” . It’s a little unrealistic as they have all these buildings, beach chairs, loungers , snorkel hut, bars etc. It is very nice though but pretty crowded when you put a whole ship ... read more

With the end of the year approaching, and two days of vacation time left, I knew I had to head to warmer weather! We were lucky enough to find a cruise that fit into a weekend, so December 7th, we departed Port Canaveral for a 3 Day, $230 cruise to the Bahamas on Royal Caribbean’s Sovereign of the Seas. Our itinerary was fantastic, leaving us with full days and little time actually on the boat: Friday - Depart Port Canaveral (5PM) Saturday - Nassau, Bahamas (11AM-Midnightish) Sunday - Coco Cay, Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas (9AM - 4PM) Monday - Arrive back to Port Canaveral (7AM) Our trip began with us driving down from Atlanta. It’s roughly a 7 ½ hour drive, of course, it always feels longer than that with the anticipation of ... read more

Greetings from Warderick Wells Bahamas Land & Sea Park Today we sailed from Normans’s Cay to Warderick Wells Cay. It was a 21 mile trip with plenty navigational challenges like dodging coral heads and reading the water by the color of green or blue which tells us how deep the water is up ahead. Generally, dark blue is good and light blue or light green means shallow water. It seems we can see the bottom virtually all of the time so the water always looks shallow, even when it is 10-15’ feet deep. Norman’s Cay is known because it served as a compound for a drug dealer named Carlos Leder back in the 90’s. It still has the ruined buildings and the airstrip used to move the drugs. It is now used by the few island ... read more
