A couple of cold fronts were predicted to hit the Bahamas and we needed to find shelter to weather the storms. Eleuthera is a very long and narrow island (100 miles long and only 2 miles wide at most), with no natural protected harbors. So we decided to make the long run down to Cape Eleuthera, the marina at Powell Pointe, which is at the very southern tip of the island. Cape Eleuthera Marina has just been re-built and has great new facilities and condos. Everything there is so modern and pristine. And the marina is in a man-made cove with a narrow entrance, which would provide adequate protection from the wind and waves. So it was a great choice for our next stop. Unfortunately there is not much to do in Powell Pointe during a ... read more

More Fun in Great Exuma We are still in GeorgeTown, Exuma enjoying the warm weather and all of the social activities planned by the cruising community here. Nancy’s sister Gayle decided that she had endured enough ice & snow in Baltimore and put together a trip to George Town during the last week in January. As soon she told us she wanted to visit, Cameron began ordering boat equipment that we decided we needed to improve the cruising experience. These included lights for the dinghy, a solar shower for days when we did not need to run the engine and a toilet rebuild kit. Nancy asked for things like brownie mix, beef sticks and some pictures of family to display on the boat. The list seemed to grow day by day with “just one more thing”. ... read more

Seb a 34 ans aujourd'hui ! About Time “Parked” in George Town We arrived in George Town December 17th after a tricky entrance to the harbour due to a strong cold front. We anchored in Elizabeth harbour for “the night” just off the famous adult playground Volleyball Beach. As of January 21st , we’re still in the same spot. We haven’t raised the anchor , but…we hope to soon! For Christmas, our son Steve, and Sharon’s sister Patti, joined us for 2 weeks, then friends from Guelph Ingrid and Gary Gander joined us for a visit, and presently long time friends from Aurora Lucy and Fred May are here. So, we’ve been pretty busy here, the “Christmas Winds” have been fairly strong , and it’s awfully nice here so … we’ve been enjoying Georgetown. Christmas, and New Years was sure different here ... read more

We left Spanish Wells in the morning; it was dead calm so we motored along the bank and thru Current Cut to Eleuthera. Current Cut is a very narrow, very shallow channel where the water flows like a river at about 5-6 knots. It was tricky to navigate, to avoid the coral heads and to avoid running aground. I had to stand at the bow and be on the lookout while we went thru this treacherous section of the trip. After getting thru the narrowest part, a section which is about100 feet wide or so, you have to do a 90 degree turn to starboard and prevent being carried away by the current. Luckily we have a very powerful motor on the boat and a very skilled captain behind the wheel. So we made it thru ... read more

Staneils Cay is home of Thunderball Cave. Tunderball Cave is the spot where the James Bond movie was filmed back in the 70's. It started as a puddle on a big rock. Over time the puddle got deeper and deeper and the waves wore out the underside of the rock. They eventually met and formed Thunderball Cave. We stayed at Staneil Cay and enjoyed a nice chicken dinner provided by the girls and we spent a little time the next morning walking around town which doesn't take that long. We took the dingy over to the cave and we all bravely got in and swam inside. The tide was going out so the current was ripping through the cave so i was of course the most fitting anchor for the group. We saw all the little ... read more

On Thursday, Meagin, Anne, Ashley and I boarded the Carnival Sensation for our 3 day Bachelorette Extravaganza. The first day was kind of cold outside, so we spent our day exploring the ship, drinking, and then hitting up the clubs onboard that evening. The ship was quite interesting. Meagin was the only one of us that had cruised before(and it had been several years ago), so we didn't really know what to expect. I am pretty sure we walked into a 1970s roller rink with all of the flashing purple neon. It was a far cry from the elegant ship I had seen on "Titanic" and in my Cunard mailers. I guess thats what we get for deciding on a ship which was reviewed as "a floating trailer park". It was cheap, and we had fun, ... read more

We returned to Spanish Wells, a small island north of Eluthera, where we have close friends and fond memories. As soon as we pull into the marina we feel like we have never left and one day easily blends into another. We arrive just in time for New Years Eve and go over to a friends house for a party, where we barbeque lobster and shish-kabobs, eat dips and casseroles, and drink many libations. We enjoy catching up with our friends who we haven’t seen since last May and watch the fireworks, which are ignited from a barge just off the island. And sitting on our friends’ porch we have the best view on the island, it is so beautiful to watch the fireworks which reflect their bright colors in the water. Around 2 a.m. we ... read more

January Update from George Town We are still in Georgetown, Exuma waiting for boat parts to repair a couple of critical systems on the boat, like the starboard sail drive and the diesel generator. If we have to be stuck somewhere this is a pretty good place to be stuck. We have participated in many of the planned activities that the cruising community puts together here. There are volleyball games every day, as well as yoga lessons, and basket weaving classes. People play bridge, or take classes in things like ham radio or swimming. In the evening there are organized Texas Hold’em poker nights, Trivial Pursuit contests as well as cocktail parties and beach bonfires. We have experienced a lot of “Firsts” since the beginning of the New Year. Nancy attended her first Yoga class ever. ... read more

... read more
