Background: Arawak Indians inhabited the islands when Christopher Columbus first set foot in the New World on San Salvador in 1492. British settlement of the islands began in 1647; the islands became a colony in 1783. Since attaining independence from the UK in 1973, The Bahamas have prospered through tourism and international banking and investment management. Because of its geography, the country is a major transshipment point for illegal drugs, particularly shipments to the US, and its territory is used for smuggling illegal migrants into the US.

We left West End and made our way further along Grand Bahama island to the Freeport area. We will be staying here over Christmas . The next few days promise to be quite windy so it is nice to be in another all round protected harbour. Yesterday we hunkered down in the large amounts of rain that fell. We took advantage of the free shuttle boat to go into the Port Lucaya market. There is a collection of colourful shops, restaurants, a straw market and arts and crafts market. It is an interesting place to visit, although if you look slightly [View Full Entry]

Today’s blog has a special guest appearance: Chris, a fellow Canadian, and my current work partner in crime. He’s been doing his new hire training on the Conquest for the last few weeks and is moving with me to the Ecstasy where he will be running the younger teen program (Circle “C”). This blog is epic, so sit back . . . Bright and early yesterday morning, I signed off the Carnival Conquest to transfer to the Carnival Ecstasy. Chris and I knew it was going to be a long day - we were signing off at 6:30am, being shuttled to [View Full Entry]

New pics: http://brookeroebuck.shutterfly.com/ Hi, Everyone!! I hope this email finds everyone well. So, I'm currently still in the Bahamas finishing up my last semester of the "general sciences." I'm currently in the second half of my second year. This semester has been the best semester of all - we're doing physical exams and going into the hospital more and more. This is my last semester here in the Bahamas, and then it should be off to Miami in September. I cannot WAIT to move back to the states. The Bahamas have been nice, but I'm ready to leave this island life. [View Full Entry]

New pictures: http://brookeroebuck.shutterfly.com/ March 23, 2009 7:41pm, Home in Freeport Hi, Everyone!! Sorry it’s been so long since I’ve last written - my life has been extremely busy. Third semester is full of classes, clinicals, patient interviews, and studying. So what’s new? Well, my parents just left today after being here for a week. We had a great time together and it was nice to show them around the place I live. They stayed in an all-inclusive hotel on the island, which they enjoyed, although there were about 800 spring-breaking college students [View Full Entry]

New pictures: http://brookeroebuck.shutterfly.com/ ________________________________________ Bermuda, Bahama, Come my pretty Mama!! Thaaaaat's right! I'm in the Bahamas! And let me just say, it is PARADISE!!! Yes, it's wonderful here. There are grocery stores, movie theaters, lines on the road, and white, sandy beaches. It really is pretty awesome. I love it. I've been here for a month to the day now and have enjoyed every moment of it. For the most part, the weather has been warm and beautiful. The people are very friendly and helpful and there's a lot to see and do. Oh, and school, [View Full Entry]

Today we’re in Freeport, Bahamas. Freeport doesn’t get great reviews from any crew I’ve spoken to. And apparently ship comment card ratings drop after we go there. But it’s the only Caribbean port of Carnival’s that I hadn’t been to, so I figured I had to still get off the ship and just see for myself. The port itself is mainly industrial. Shipping crates everywhere. It’s also one of the main ports we use on the East Coast for dry dock (when our ships go under renovations for a couple weeks). Currently, the Destiny is in dry dock. I stood out [View Full Entry]

G'day All, we hope things are well back home. It's been a long while since our last entry, but we will have quite a few in the not too distant future as we have a fair bit of travel planned in the next six weeks, but I'll get to that a little later on. Our latest adventure was a pretty awesome one actually. As some of you know there are a number of guys that Fiona and I did our military training with posted to various locations around the US, and we decided it was time to have a get together [View Full Entry]

Untitled I have pondered the idea of putting together a travel blog for some time now and when I came across this web site, I was hooked! I hope to write about all my travel experiences (past and present) so that I can always look back and remember the great times. So it has been almost 9 months since John and I were married at the Westin Our Lucaya on Grand Bahama. I could go on and on about our wedding experience, but thought I'd focus on it as a travel experience. Travel To And Fro First off, getting to [View Full Entry]

I'm in Miami now, but I started this entry when I was still in Freeport, so I thought I'd post. Since I've been so off the grid here in Freeport (this is the first day I've gone on the internet since I got here a week ago), allow me to give you a brief rundown of what I've been up to. It hasn't been very exciting or varied, but I'll give you the highlights. The dancers (or "twirlies" as the tech crew affectionately(?) labels them) arrived on board about three days before we left Charleston and I've been slowly getting to [View Full Entry]
