On a recent trip to Santo Domingo, we were traveling on a budget and decided to give Hotel Danae in gazcue a shot Hotel Danae Website . We had stayed there previously but they have since added 6 or 7 new rooms. Gazcue is a great place to stay in Santo Domingo as it is within walking distance to the Colonial Zone, the Malecon and many hotels, bars and restaurants. Hotel Danae is thinking about adding free WIFO for its guests which would make it even more of a no brainer to stay there. They have 2 employees that speak english and that can also answer any questions via email in English. We speak spanish well enough but it is hard to find hotels in this price range that has any english speaking employees, so that ... read more

Boca Chica is the closest beach town to the capital city of Santo Domingo.Boca Chica Beach is about 30 minutes away and is a great beach to hang out at all day. The water is clear and extremely calm as Boca Chica beach is a natural lagoon. Kids can play in the water all day long without lifeguards as the water is calm and shallow. The East end of the beach features lots of bars and restaurants right on the beach, while the western end is more for locals that will rent a table under an umbrella and order their food and drink from strolling vendors. Speaking of vendors, people will try and sell you everything under the sun in Boca. Some find it annoying but some like the local flavor. From beach towels and beach ... read more

I have seen some recent posts here from Cabarete. Cabarete is a great little tonw on theNorth Coast of the DR. It is famous for both Wind Surfing and Kite Boarding. A few years back I shot some Kite boarding on Kite Beach in Cabarete the day before the Grand Prix. It was tough shooting video in obviously heavy wind, while shooting full telefoto and standing in the surf. The Kite Boarding Video came out pretty decent and we posted it on www.dr-tourist.tv Cabarete also has a bunch of bars and restaurants right on the beach. Many are a bit overpriced tourist type places, but they can be fun and the food is decent. Across the main road there are some more affordable places to eat. There is a german place right on the main drag ... read more

Back in february we spent about 5 weeks in the DR and shot footage of Carnaval In La Vega, Bonao, Santiago and Santo Domingo. We finally got around to editing the Santo Domingo Carnaval Parade video. In Santo Domingo they have a parade or "desfila" with Carnaval comparsas and groups from all over the DR. This video highlights "los pintaos" from Barahona, as well as some brief shots of men from Monte Christe fighting with bullwhips. Next year we have to make it out to Monte Christe to shoot the Carnaval celebration there. Hopefully we will not get stuck in the crossfire of the bullwhip fighting!... read more

Since I make so many trips to the Dominican Republic, I am always on the lookout for budget priced hotels to stay at. My last few trips to Santiago I have stayed at Hotel Colonial on Cucurullo, near the corner of 30 de marzo. It is a decent sized hotel with 2 buildings. The rooms are very basic, and clean. They all have hot water and you can choose whether you want AC or not. I paid about 475 pesos per night with AC. That is a great deal. The hotel is in the downtown area of Santiago and a short walk to calle del Sol and other main shopping areas. Avenida 27 de febrero is 2 blocks away and one night I even walked to the monument area after a brief stop at McDonalds for ... read more

I am heading to Santo Domingo on tuesday morning but will be flying into La Romana airport. I have been to La Romana a few times but never to the airport. I will most likely take a bus to Santo Domingo and stay there for a day or two before heading up to Santiago. I may spend a night in Jarabacoa as well. I would like to shoot some video in Jarabacoa as I have never been there. I need to call my buddy geremia fromtaxi dominicano . He had wanted to shoot some video of his taxis outside of Altos De Chavon and on the beach in Bayahibe. If he is available, maybe he will pick me up in La Romana and we can shoot some video out in that area. Once in Santo Domingo ... read more

In the town of Puerto Plata on the north coast of the Dominican Republic they have a cable car or "teleferico" to the top of Mt. Isabel Del Torres. On top of the mountain you get a great view of the ocean as well as puerto plata below. If it is a cloudy day do not go to the teleferico as the view will be obstructed by clouds. There is also a botanical gardens at the top as well as a statue of Christ similar to the one in Rio, Brazil. We shot some video of the Puerto Plata Teleferico and posted it to www.dr-tourist.tv We are trying to giev tourists a reason to venture beyond the walls of their All Inclusive resort and explore the surrounding areas a bit. There are a bunch of things ... read more

I am a big baseball fan and love going to see a game or two while in the DR. I have seen games at 3 of the 5 stadiums. I have been to the stadiums in Santo Domingo, San Pedro, and Santiago. Next winter I want to go to San Francisci to see a game and maybe even La Romana. I wanted to show people what a winter league game in the Dominican Republic was like. I shot a bunch of video at a game between Licey and Las Aguilas and edited together a short video clip to put onwww.dr-tourist.tv The video was shot at Estadio Quisqueya in Santo Domingo. The games can get pretty wild. Lots of music, dancing, cheering, drinking and . . . . . the best part. . . . .CHEERLEADERS!!! All ... read more

Having been to Carnaval in La Vega Dominican Republic 2 times in 2002 and 2003, I decided to once again visit La Vega, but to also travel to Bonao to check out and video tape the Carnaval celebration in Bonao.Carnaval 2005 Bonao Video Clip I traveled to Bonao on a bus or as dominicans call it a "gua gua". I arrived in Bonao rather early and decided to walk around a bit. There was not much happening so I headed to Hotel Aquarius and had lunch. The lunch was pretty good and reasonably priced. I had pork chops with white rice and fries plus a frozen lemonade or two. Hotel Aquarius seemed very nice. Certainly the nicest hotel in Bonao. I then made my way to the park to check out the preparations for Carnaval. It ... read more
