I caught the shuttle bus to the airport from Ubud and at one stage I was worried that I might miss my flight, but after the driver put his foot down I arrived on time. It was about a 3 hour flight to KL(LCCT) and I walked through the arrival hall about 1am and headed straight to the cheap food hall with free wifi. I killed the 6 hours I had to wait for my next flight quite easily by drinking plenty of coffee, surfing the net, and talking to a Malaysian guy also headed to Kuching. At 7am I boarded the plane and a few hours later after taking a taxi from the airport had arrived in the chinatown district of Kuching where I found an average place to stay for about $13 a night. ... read more

From Kuta Lombok it was only an hour by car and then 4 hours on the ferry before arriving in Padang Bai, Bali. I had a little trouble finding a reasonably priced room because August is high season and the locals try to make the most of it by putting prices right up. I settled on a basic room with breakfast for $11 a night. I met a lovely Italian girl called Cinzia at my hotel and in the evening we decided to eat at a little local warung. We both ordered fish with rice and vegetables but were very surprised when we received a plate containing two halves of a very large fish head. We came to the conclusion that maybe this warung didn't like tourists eating there. The next morning we went snorkeling at ... read more

I spent a total of 6 days in Senggigi just relaxing and not doing very much at all. It is quite touristy compared to the other places I have been to in Lombok, with many hotels, restaurants, bars, and the usual touts. It has some nice but not great beaches and a little snorkeling which I didn't try because the current was too strong. A lot of the restaurants had bands playing in the evening and I found them to be very good. I finally bought a mask and snorkel which I should have done a couple of months before to save me money every time I rented one. I stayed in a nice little hotel with a nice clean room for $9 a night without breakfast just 100 metres from the main area. Senggigi beach ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Lombok » Rinjani July 20th 2011

I decided to book a 3 day 3 night Mt Rinjani(Indonesia's 2nd highest volcano at 3726 metres) tour from Gili Islands because it seemed quite a reasonable price at $125 and they would drop me at Senggigi afterwards. The price included all transport, camping gear, porters, guide, food, and water, except for lunch and dinner on the first day at the guesthouse in Senaru. I was told to be at the port at Gili Air at 7am, but we didn't leave on the boat to Bangsar until after 8am. It was a very short trip to the port and I was very surprised how tiny it was. From there I received a 1km horse and cart ride to the waiting car where I joined three others headed for Senaru, the starting point for our trek. After ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Lombok » Gili Air July 15th 2011

The one and a half hour speedboat ride from Jemeluk to the Gili Islands was quite a rough one. For the first half hour I felt a little sick with the big swell, but after that it settled down a little so I didn't feel that bad. After dropping passengers off at Gili Trawangan we bypassed Gili Meno because the waves were too big, and finally we arrived at Gili Air. The Gili Islands consist of these 3 very small islands off the northwest coast of Lombok. I walked past the touts and wandered inland where I quickly found an old bungalow for $10 a night including breakfast and free tea and coffee all day. That afternoon I had a little look around and spent a couple of hours at a beachside restaurant just taking it ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Amed July 10th 2011

The minibus picked me up at 10am and after picking up a few more passengers we made our way across the north of Bali to the far east and the area collectively known as Amed. Amed is the first of about half a dozen villages and bays which have quite a few hotels and guesthouses scattered along the road. I decided to stay at Jemeluk which has good snorkelling and some of the cheaper hotels. It didn't take long before I got a nice big beachfront room including fridge and breakfast for $9 a night. After having a late lunch I walked down the road a couple of kms before returning along the beach. The beaches are either black sand or dark stones which can get a little uncomfortable to walk on, but it is a ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Lovina July 7th 2011

The bus took about an hour and a half to Lovina and I decided to stay at the first place I looked at being that it was quite good value at $5.50 a night with a basic breakfast. I decided that I would spend a bit of time here and recuperate after having quite a busy time the last week and a half in Java. Of course the first thing I did was to have a walk around town and I came to the conclusion that it hasn't changed a great deal since I was here for New Years Eve 2001. It has a nice and relaxed feel to it and it is not full of tourists. Which is probably not a great thing for all the vendors who are trying to make a living. Saturday ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Java » Ijen Plateau July 2nd 2011

I woke up very early again on thursday to take a few more photos of Bromo, post my blog, and have breakfast before catching my minibus back down the mountain at 9am. Once we had picked up the other tourists, including 3 girls I had met on the Merapi climb (Diana and Jackie from Germany, and Kim from America), it took only an hour or so to make our way to Probolinggo where we changed to another minibus. From there it was an interesting 5 hour drive with some great scenery including rice fields, sugarcane fields, forests, coffee plantations, and some cute villages, before arriving at our guesthouse 7km past the town of Sempol. Our hotel had a cold water pool as well as a spring-fed hot tub which was tempting but being dusk and a ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Java » Mount Bromo June 30th 2011

I ended up booking an organised tour to Bromo because I thought it would save me a lot of time and hassle. It took about 12 hours to get to my hotel and after having dinner and a little read I had an early night because I had to wake up at 3.30am to catch my jeep to the viewpoint. Next morning after a short jeep ride and a 15 minute walk I reached the viewpoint where there were about another hundred or so tourists eagerly waiting for the sunrise. We could already see the outline of Mount Batok and Mount Bromo and as the sun came up the view just kept getting better and better. Every 10 to 15 minutes Mount Bromo would let out some more smoke and ash which meant that the view ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Java » Yogyakarta June 26th 2011

My flight to Yogyakarta arrived at 8.30am and it wasn't long before I had collected my bag and cleared customs. I decided to take a taxi because it was less than $6, and it was only a 20 minute drive to the tourist area of Sosrowijayan Rd where I found a nice hotel with a very inviting swimming pool for $10 a night. The first thing that I noticed in Indonesia was that it was not nearly as hot and humid as Malaysia which was a great relief to me. That afternoon I went for a walk down Malioboro Rd which is the main road in the city. It didn't take too long before I started getting pissed off with what seemed like every fifth person in the street asking where I come from and wanting ... read more
