All went well with my 1 hour flight from Palawan to Cebu 11 days ago, and no problems getting a metered taxi from the airport to my hotel in the city centre. I must say that Cebu City is not the prettiest city I have ever seen. There seems to be a fair bit of poverty around and quite a few shady characters. For the first time in the 10 months of my latest trip I had a couple of guys on 2 seperate occasions within 30 minutes trying to get close enough to me waiting for a chance to pickpocket me. On my second day in the city I decided to go to the Ayala Shopping Center with Phil, a guy staying at my hotel. I spent the afternoon having a look around the impressive ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Palawan » El Nido October 16th 2011

On tuesday Dawid and myself hopped on the 8am jeepney from Port Barton to Roxas. The jeepney ended up leaving about 15 minutes late and then circled the town picking up extra cargo before returning to the starting point and waiting another 5 minutes before finally departing. Thankfully it only took about an hour and a quarter to get to our stop in Roxas where we waited about an hour to hop on the bus for El Nido. About 5 hours later we eventually arrived at the bus station, caught a trike into town and were dropped off at Rosannas where we found the room and price to our liking. That afternoon we walked around town, played a little basketball with the locals, and had a nice pizza for dinner. I was happily surprised that it ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Palawan » Port Barton October 10th 2011

On friday I decided to go to the small beach town of Port Barton. I was joined by Dawid, a Polish guy that I had met at my hotel. We woke up early and caught a trike to the San Jose bus terminal 7 km from Puerto Princesa, and then hopped in a minibus for a 2 hour journey to the turnoff to Port Barton. We had to wait over 2 hours for the jeepney to turn up and we killed the time by listening to music and having a coffee and some chocolate bars. The jeepney was quite large and luckily there were a couple of seats for us. People told us the road was quite bad but I found it surprisingly good except for a few spots where we had to go through a ... read more

I left the hostel for the airport in Kota Kinabalu last tuesday not even realising there was a typhoon in the vicinity of Luzon, Philippines, the place I was headed to. We boarded the plane about 15 minutes late and as we were in the air the pilot mentioned that there was a typhoon north of Clarke Airfield but all should be okay. A couple of hours later we were coming into land with landing gear down and all, and then the pilot pulled out blaming the strong winds and wet weather. We circled the airport for over an hour waiting for the conditions to improve before attempting another landing which was also aborted. So to everyones disappointment we flew the 2 hours back to Kota Kinabalu. Once back at the airport in KK it took ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Kota Kinabalu September 26th 2011

I've been in Kota Kinabalu for about 9 days now, with a 2 and a half day break in between at Mount Kinabalu. In all this time I seemed to have done very little except to relax and let my slightly sore legs from the failed climb recover. On one of the days I went on a speedboat out to Sapi Island to snorkel which was good fun. Also I have seen 2 movies at the cinema, Fright Night which was ok, and Warriors which I really enjoyed. I have also eaten a few meals at the night market and caught up with a fair bit of fast food. I had Burger King for the first time in ages and thought the burger was the best I have had since leaving home. I have been staying ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Mount Kinabalu September 23rd 2011

I had decided to attempt to climb to the summit of Mount Kinabalu (Southeast Asia's highest mountain at 4,095 metres) this time in Sabah seeing that I had given it a miss last year. I went to the Sutera office in Kota Kinabalu and booked a dorm room 2 days later on the mountain for RM522 including 5 meals and the climbing permit. The other costs involved were RM15 for entrance to the park, RM8 for return trip from park headquarters to Timpohon Gate at the start of the trek, and RM38 for the guide (sharing with 3 others). The day before the trek I caught a local minibus (RM20) 2 hours to a guesthouse just 500 metres from the entrance to the park. The place was in a nice position with good views and cost ... read more

Asia » Brunei » Bandar Seri Begawan September 15th 2011

After spending monday night in Miri I got up early and took a local bus to the express bus station where I hopped on a minibus bound for Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei. I was pretty happy at the border when they gave me a single entry visa for B$20, because I was expecting to pay B$30 for a multiple entry. We finally arrived at Bandar Seri Begawan at midday and shortly after I had checked into my 4 bed dorm room at the youth hostel for $8 a night. I was a bit worried that they wouldn't let me stay after they had asked my age, but everthing was cool. The room also had a/c and for the 2 nights I stayed there I had the room to myself. After having lunch I ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sarawak » Bario September 12th 2011

On thursday I caught a little 12 seat Twin Otter plane from Miri to a small town in the Kelabit Highlands called Bario. I booked this flight for $30 each way the week before which in my opinion is a bargain. There were only 8 of us on the flight and the cockpit door was open the whole 50 minutes of the flight so you could see what the pilots were up to. We flew over Gunung Mulu National Park on the way and finally landed at a very small airport where there about 15 locals waiting to pickup friends or cargo. After having a coffee and chat with the pilots I got a lift to the centre of town and looked for somewhere to stay. I decided to stay at the Royal Villa homestay where ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sarawak » Gunung Mulu National Park September 7th 2011

From Kuching I caught a local bus to an intersection and then walked for 20 minutes to the jetty for the boat bound for Sibu, only to find out that it was already booked out hours earlier. So I jumped into a taxi and headed across the other side of town to the long distance bus terminal where I found a seat on a bus leaving at 10am. It was a pretty boring 7 hour ride with not a great deal to see. After arriving at the Sibu bus station and finding out the local bus to the centre had stopped running for the day, I jumped into another taxi and found some nice accommodation in the middle of town. Sibu is not a very pretty city, it mainly acts as a commercial centre for the ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sarawak » Bako National Park August 26th 2011

On tuesday I was pretty happy to find out I could book a dorm bed ($5) for thursday night at Bako National Park. So thursday morning I caught the 8am public bus to a town where you catch a 20 minute boat ride ($3) out to the national park. Once I had signed in and paid the park fees ($3.40) I decided to walk a couple of the trails with an english girl, Michelle who I had met whilst waiting for the bus in Kuching. We walked for about an hour and a half along a diverse trail to the Tajor Waterfall. It wasn't much of a waterfall and there wasn't a lot of flowing water but it was a great place to take a dip in the cool water and wash the sweat away. We ... read more
