Just thought I should let you know what I have been up to these past couple of weeks. I went to Ko Samet for 3 days which is a very small island about 2 hours from Pattaya. I think I really needed the break because I did not do a great deal while I was there. On the second day I hired a motorbike and rode around the island checking out all the lovely bays. I found a little spot called Ao Thian which I promised myself if I come back I would stay there for a few days. I then headed back to Pattaya, but this time I stayed in Jomtien, so it would be easier to hang out with Paul and his friends for their remaining 5 days. Most evenings we would end up ... read more

I spent a couple of days in Phetburi on the way back up the coast where I went to see a little cave temple just out of town, and also went up to the top of the hill in town via cable car where you can see a couple more temples, a pagoda, and an old home. After that I went straight to Pattaya to meet up with Paul, his girlfriend Rin, and a few of his mates that I know from back home. Also I met up with Marcus and his family for dinner, an ex-workmate who now works over here. Pattaya is a very big town with the most bars I have ever seen in one place, which makes it a huge party town. The great thing about having so many tourists and ex-pats ... read more

What a f**ked up week it’s been. My pickup from my hotel was 30 minutes late (nothing unusual in Thailand but would have meant that I could have had 5 hours sleep instead of 4.5 hours). A songthaew took us to the train station where we hopped on a bus and waited for the people coming from Bangkok to arrive. From there it was a quick 20 minutes to the pier where we boarded the fast catamaran. As soon as we departed, the sea was very rough and I could tell that it wasn’t going to be a nice crossing. I sat on the open deck at the back of the boat thinking that it was my best chance of not getting seasick. The spray was coming over the top and from the side of the ... read more

Seeing I have plenty of time I decided to slowly make my way down the coast, stopping off at a few places on the way to Ko Tao. Firstly I went to a popular destination for Thai holiday makers, Cha-am. I stayed two nights and really enjoyed the quiet and relaxed atmosphere of the place. There were only a few western tourists (mainly Scandinavian package tourists), and not that many Thais either. Admittedly it is not one of the best beaches in Thailand, but it is still fine for swimming. It has a nice breeze coming off the sea, ideal for walking along the beach or just sitting in a beach chair under an umbrella. Also I had a great choice of cheap accommodation which mainly caters for the locals. Next I made my way to ... read more

First stop, Bangkok. My flight arrived on time about 8pm, so I decided to take the new airport train into the city. Half an hour later I was at the end of the line, where I took a taxi to Soi Rambuttri which is a backpacker area next to Khao San Rd. Total trip took less than an hour all for $4. If I took a taxi from the airport I assume it would have taken about the same time and would have cost 5 times as much. Soi Rambuttri is quite relaxed but with all the pluses of being a popular backpacker area, with the usual 7-Eleven, street food, restaurant, bookshop, etc, only about 20 metres from my hotel. First day I took a couple of trips on the very convenient Chao Phraya river ferries. ... read more
