I spent a couple of nights in Bangkok once I got back from Myanmar. I didn’t really do a great deal just caught up with Rin and also caught up with all the great Thai food I have missed in the last month. I caught the 12 hour overnight bus to Chiang Mai which was a breeze after the ones in Myanmar and quickly found some good accommodation for $15 a night including breakfast. I ended up staying a couple of nights there and just took it easy. I didn’t think there was a great deal to see around town but it has a relaxed atmosphere and seems like a popular place to do courses in cooking, thai boxing, massage, etc. On Saturday night I went to see some Thai boxing which had an interesting mix ... read more

I caught the bus from Mandalay to Bagan at 8am and for the first time there were more tourists on the bus than locals. After a couple of hours we stopped for a toilet stop in a small town while the driver and his assistant changed a flat tyre. Four hours later along a bumpy road we arrived at Nyaung U which is where most people stay to see the temples of Bagan. Found some accommodation for $10 a night, had something to eat, and then had a look at a large temple complex in town. On the way back to my hotel I ran into Jessie and Hilary, my Canadian friends who I had spent quite a bit of time with the previous couple of weeks. That night we caught up with each other at ... read more

I caught the 5.30am bus to Mandalay then caught a pickup from the station to my guesthouse. I was actually lead there by a young guy who was on the bus with me. I seem to meet a lot of young men from Kyaukme who are very keen to improve their English so that they can get into tourism or improve their prospects for work. Some of these guys hold English and computer classes. I caught up with Aitan again and went for a walk to the river where he introduced me to a trishaw driver who is a friend of his. The prospects in the future are not too good for trishaw drivers with the introduction of hundreds of thousands of cheap Chinese motorbikes. There are about 20,000 trishaw drivers in Mandalay and the work ... read more

The 4 of us caught the 10am bus to Kyaukme which had all the seats removed towards the back so it could carry cargo(large drums of oil, sacks of rice, etc). We reached the town an hour and a half later and quickly found accommodation, and then Aitan and myself went down to the train station to take some photos when the train came through. After this we just walked around the outskirts of town saying hi to the friendly locals. Kyaukme seems to be larger and more prosperous than the other towns in the area with a few nice looking large old buildings near the centre of town. That night we all went out to dinner together seeing that the other 3 were leaving the next day while I was going to do a day tour ... read more

We hopped on the jeep at 9.30am bound for Namhsan. We stopped by the other guesthouse to pick up an Israeli, Aitan which made it 10 people in our small jeep. Jessie and myself ended up sitting on a large sack on the tailgate. The first 45 minutes was okay although a little bumpy and then the driver stopped and got out a tarp which he attached to the back of the roof and hung it over mine and Jessie’s backs. And then the dust started, it was coming up from the sides and under the tarp, as well as through the vehicle itself. The views from the sides of the mountains were quite spectacular but our view was mainly obscured by trying to keep the tarp closed as well as trying to cover our faces ... read more

We left the hotel about 4pm and got lucky by catching a pickup straight away to take us the 7 kilometres to the junction where we would catch our bus to Mandalay. We had something to eat and drink at a tea shop and then played pool for an hour while waiting for the bus. The 4 of us had decided that once we got to Mandalay that we would catch another as soon as possible to Pyin U Lwin. We arrived at the bus station in Mandalay about 4.30am and asked many people where we catch the bus to Pyin U Lwin which they all told us there was no bus from there. So we eventually gave up and got a taxi to where the driver said the bus would be. He dropped us off ... read more

Asia » Burma » Mandalay Region » Inle Lake February 9th 2011

The afternoon after finishing the trek I didn’t do a great deal, just had a shower and went out and got dinner. Nyaungshwe seems like a decent town though, with plenty of tourist restaurants and guesthouses mixed in with local businesses and a few temples and monasteries. Initially I thought it to be quite touristy but after being there a few days I quite liked it. Next day I hired a bike for a couple of dollars and started a little ride that the bike hirer recommended. Just after I started I ran into a Swiss guy Marcus that I had met that morning at breakfast. His girlfriend was feeling sick and going back to the hotel so we decided to do the ride together. We just took our time riding along the quiet roads and ... read more

Next day I caught a taxi to the bus station about 45 minutes from the city so I could catch my overnight bus to Kalaw. The taxi driver sped through the traffic and overtook on both sides which I was a bit worried about initially but soon got used to it. The bus trip started off pretty good with a good highway and with very little traffic we seemed to be doing about 90km per hour. Right after we left Yangon you could see ricefields, bullocks pulling carts, and huts where the people lived – very rural. We had been travelling for about 4 hours when we went through the capital Nay Pyi Taw. Talking about a contrast to the rest of Myanmar, very expensive hotels that were lit up like xmas trees, very large new ... read more

Hi everyone, I am back and alive and well. Just spent a marvellous 4 weeks in Myanmar and seriously thinking about going back possibly in November when the rains stop. It was pretty useless getting on the internet over there because all the sites I use are blocked. The one time I did use a computer, to put some photos from my memory stick in the camera onto my USB drive I got a nasty virus on each and almost lost the lot. I have actually been back in Thailand for the last few days and took the overnight bus from Bangkok to Chiang Mai last night. Hopefully it should only take about a week to catch up on my blogs and to fill you in on what I have been up to. The flight from ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Sukhothai February 2nd 2011

After Ayuthaya I headed six hours north on the bus to the temple town of Sukhothai. I arrived as usual without any accommodation booked and got lucky by getting a free ride on a minibus with 3 other people who had booked there stay with Sila Resort. I was very happy to get a nice comfortable room with aircon for $12 a night. That evening I walked the 10 minutes into town and tried a few things at the night market. Next day I caught the 65 cent small bus/truck(see video 1) to travel the 12 kms to Sukhothai old town where the temples are located. At the entrance I hired a bike for $1 and spent the next 5 hours riding around enjoying the many temples in the area. It probably lacks the variety of ... read more
