Coastal Driving Today we drove up the California coast, and by we I really mean me. The problem with driving up the coast is the driving. When driving you are not able to look at the surroundings as much as you would like due to having to actually watch the road. And when you are driving you are unable to take photos as much as you would like, creating even more frustration. My co-pilot (Stephen) did assist with a few pics, but it just wasn't the same. An early morning for all of us, Donald was off to his conference and the kids and I walked to a local bakery for breakfast. The city was quiet and calm this morning, a vast difference from last night. We then headed down the highway making our way to ... read more

Goodbye Yosemite, Hello San Jose Today we said goodbye to Yosemite. Yosemite was great but crowded with people. There were cars at every pullout, walkers and bicyclists all through the valley and huge buses giving tours everywhere we went. It was hard to find the quieter places, but we did it. No mountain lion was ever found. We did learn today that the emergency we saw the responders for yesterday was a climber that was fatally hit by a rock while climbing the mountain. We also heard of a hiker who was washed over one of the waterfalls on Saturday, but he has not been located. It is beautiful in this park but dangers are also very present. We were up fairly early, packed, ate our continental breakfast we purchased last night and were on our ... read more

Up, Up, and Over Today we went up, up, and over the park. After a good nights sleep, a buffet breakfast at the hotel and avoiding a minor emergency we were headed back into Yosemite. The minor emergency is one the kids said I had to include in the blog. Upon exiting the parking lot of the hotel, Donald had a minor panic attack. He said a few words, smoothly put the car in park, stepped outside and grabbed his coffee off the top of the car. Minor emergency avoided. Today's travels took us along the Tioga Road which goes all the way across Yosemite National Park. Though it is less than 50 miles long, it is one of those crazy, curvy, no guard rail, 9000 feet up roads - so it took a while. With ... read more

Going to Yosemite Today began early as most all my days do, but to my surprise the rest of the family also got up early and we were on the road by 7am. It probably had something to do with how uncomfortable the hotel beds were. Regardless of the reason, we were headed to Yosemite and the extra time just meant more daylight hours to see more of the park. We stopped at a local bagel shop and grabbed breakfast and hit the road. After reading a about the various ways to get in to Yosemite, we decided to take the scenic route. After all, we were here to see the sights. The scenic route takes us on the interstate for a few miles with tons of windmills on the hillside, then it takes us on ... read more

Time Traveling Today, we traveled through time. We have all said it: 'I wish I had more time', 'there are not enough hours in the day', 'if I could only go back in time'. Well, today we did! So what did we do with our extra found hours of the day? We rode in a packed airplane of 200 or so people, with only one working lavatory which had a long line to use their only working facility the entire 5 and a half hours. First stop after exiting the plane? It is pretty obvious. i am sure I have mentioned it before, but airlines need a 'tour guide' aboard to tell you the highlights of the world below. Not only would it help pass the time, but it could be educational as well. I love ... read more

Ready or not, we leave for our summer trip in 5 days. I still do not know what we will be doing, which is so unusual for me. I am a planner - usually planning every detail of each day so that I can get the most out of a trip. I always think that I will not likely come to this part of the country again, so I better get the most out of it that I can and see as much as I can regardless of how tired it makes me (or the rest of the family). After all, this is probably a once in a lifetime experience. But this year, the trip is a bit different. My husband has to travel to San Jose for a business trip so we decided the whole ... read more

Day 11 Does It Really Have to End? Today is the day it all ends…back to Atlanta, back to the heat and humidity, back to the fast paced life we left 11 days ago…back to reality. This morning began with a 3am alarm ringing. Time to get ready, check out of one final hotel, grab the shuttle to the airport and catch an early morning flight home. All went as scheduled. Even the flight went smoothly. It is probably the smoothest take-off I have ever experienced. If only all takes-offs were that good – flying would be so much more enjoyable. No one felt ill this time (except for Donald during the landing in Atlanta), so that was much more enjoyable as well. I took a few more final pictures during the flight and Stephen and ... read more

Day 10 The Bridge, The Wharf, & The Prison Day 10 means that our trip is coming to an end. Though I long for my own pillow and bed, I am not ready for the trip to be done. But reality is setting in and knowing that I have to go back to work in 2 days, is a sad, sad truth. We started the day by checking out of yet another hotel (we have visited many on this trip) and heading over the Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco. We stop at the bay/port area before crossing over to capture a few shots of the bridge. We then head into the big city, pay our toll for using the bridge and head toward Pier 33. The bridge is big and attractively built. But for some ... read more

Day 9 Driving the San Andreas Fault Today was filled with twist, turns, rain and lots and lots and lots of driving. We drove from McKinleyville, CA to Mill Valley, CA – about 300 miles, via the scenic route of course making it an ALL day adventure. We began by going through another Redwoods state park down a road entitled the Avenue of the Giants. It is impressive to see those towering giants above you and driving amongst them. A few more pictures and we get back on the highway. I then chose for us to go down the Coastal Highway, because I figure why be in California that close to the coast and not actually see the coast – so we take off towards to the coast, via CA1, also known as the Coast Highway. ... read more

Day 8 Redwoods and Gray whales Another day, another park – Today’s travels took us to Redwoods State and National Parks where we saw the forest and the trees. And today we learned that we are among Oregon’s list of criminals. After leaving the hotel, we stop to fill the car with gas before getting on the next scenic (sleepy, curvy, hilly) highway and are informed that it is illegal for customers to pump their own gas. Well the guy didn’t tell us that yesterday when we filled our own tanks – so we are now lawbreakers. After a pleasant conversation with gentleman pumping the gas for us, we offer him a tip for his services. It is apparently against the law to accept tips – so the guy who we tipped 2 days ago is ... read more
