The first one up was me, as always. But I let everyone else sleep in. No agenda today. Well we did have one, but it was changed. I had booked a cruise to Dry Tortugas National Park several weeks ago for today. But the ferry group called me on Wednesday and told me that they were expecting rough weather on Friday and was giving people the opportunity to switch to Saturday to make it more enjoyable. I was skeptical at first for I had already checked the weather, but visions and memories of Donald heaving over the side of the boat of a snorkeling cruise we took about several years ago, swayed me to agree to change our plans. So, with a free day, I looked for free things to do in Key West. The Dry ... read more

I am the most hot natured person I know and why I thought visiting the southern most part of the US in the middle of summer was a good idea, I am not sure. Well, I do know why - but the timing could have been better. The reason? A business trip for Donald that we tagged along with for a few days. He has a conference in Miami, so we decided to take the kids to Key West. We have never been before and it is one of those bucket list places, so we are here. We arrived in Homestead, FL on Wednesday night so that we could begin our trek from a good central location. Our first stop - breakfast. Everyone knows that people are the happiest when they are no longer hungry. Our ... read more

Hiking the Tetons Today began with ice on our windshield so it was a chilly start to our morning. This was our last day at Flagg Ranch, so we packed up and headed to the dining room for breakfast. And it was delicious. Their breakfast menu was so much better than their dinner menu. After checking out we headed south back to the Grand Tetons. We took it slow still searching for that moose, but he apparently already had his breakfast and was hiding deep in the forest. We stopped at Oxbow Bend which is very picturesque and famous for animals. We only saw a deer but the view of the majestic Tetons reflecting in the river was amazing - no animals needed to enjoy that spot. We traveled further around the park and stopped again ... read more

Yellowstone Part 2 - Old Faithful and Beyond Today's touring of Yellowstone took us around the west side of the park. That side has more thermal areas than the east side and more people. We set off early with the intention of eating breakfast at the grill just like yesterday, but apparently today is the first day of the fall season and all the restaurants and stores open much later in the day. I wasn't asking for a sunrise breakfast, but thought 8am would be acceptable. I thought wrong. After we realized that area would not open for hours we made our way around to Old Faithful. It was about to erupt when we arrived so we quickly ran to the geyser to watch. And she blew....a lot of steam. Of course there was lots of ... read more

Yellowstone - Canyons and Downhill Liabilities Yellowstone National Park is huge. There is no way to even see the top sights in a day or two much less the not so crowded sites. Therefore choices have to be made - what is on the 'must do list', what is on the 'if we have time list' and what is on the 'maybe next time list'. Touch decisions, but it has to be done. We only have 2 days to tour the park and decided it best to split the park in half, devoting 1 side to each day. Today we toured the east side of Yellowstone. We were up long before the sun, but waited until daylight to head out. I wanted to be able to actually see what I was driving by. We quickly entered ... read more

Touring the Tetons Wyoming trip day 2 We woke to rain this morning, but knew to not worry for the weather in Jackson, WY is always changing. We partook of the breakfast the hotel was so gracious to provide joining the entire tour group from the large bus who was apparently staying at our same hotel. It was crowded and the group was certainly not from the south for they lacked a bit of 'southern hospitality' or common decency - they were just rude. We checked out of the hotel and went back to the store for a little more shopping (still replenishing the essentials that were in the suitcase that did not make it on the plane). We also grabbed a sandwich for lunch later on. Then we were off to explore. We stopped in ... read more

Wyoming - day 1 Perils of a Flight Today begins our Wyoming adventure. I call it an adventure, because we really do not know what to expect. I have been watching the weather forecast and it keeps changing - one day warm, the next cold, one day dry, the next rain, some days windy, some not. All of these things have an impact on the current fires in the area which is why I have been watching so closely. There are currently 5 fires burning in Yelowstone National Park. According to news reports, only one poses any type of threat to visitors and that is more of a nuisance threat than a physical threat. That particular fire is close to the main road and officials will close that section if the fire or smoke makes it ... read more

Today's travels are pretty boring for it consists of interstate - airport - airplane - airport - interstate. There are no pictures to post, no exciting stories, no wondrous sites to behold. We checked out of our hotel early in hopes to avoid the chaos that sometimes surrounds a presidential visit and we were successful. There were still road blocks and police everywhere, but no president. We joined in the traffic of thousands of others during morning rush hour and started our way to SFO. It tok a bit longer than expected due to the slow traffic. After finding our road for the car rental return we searched for a gas station that had a car wash for our car was quite dirty. It was not easy to find. After obtaining a clean car, we decided ... read more

Down to Monterey Bay Today's travels took us down to Monterey Bay with several stops on the way there and back. A quick breakfast at the hotel, camera charged, and backpack packed, we were ready for more California scenery. Our first stop off of CA1 was a visit to Seacliff State Park. The park has an old boat at the end of the pier that you could once walk on, but has now been closed. There were birds everywhere, making the old boat their sanctuary and pier & surrounding areas very dirty. I had expected more scenic beaches with a name of Seacliff, so I was disappointed when we found no actual cliffs. In fact it was not a pretty beach or park at all. I was even more disappointed in the fact that I had ... read more

Touring the Town Today's travels do not have too much to report, for we really did not travel any. The kids and I mostly hung out around the hotel and the downtown district. We tried a different bakery this morning and spotted some awesome looking desserts for later in the day. After breakfast we went to the lobby for some internet time while waiting for some of the businesses to open. Most places do not open until 10 or 11 around here, which is just against my internal clock. Around 10 we headed to the Tech Museum. It is a hands on technology museum, but mostly geared towards elementary students. We looked at all the exhibits, interacting with a few of them. We were again surrounded by students on a last-week-of-school field trip, so that took ... read more
