We knew the weather was not going to be favorable today, so we planned on some activities in which the weather did not impact much. After breakfast we gathered our supplies for the day and headed south to the town of Bigfork. Finding the little unique shops in small towns can be interesting. I often wonder how some of these small towns got their names. Did Bigfork actually have a big fork in it? Or did it simply mean something else? Either way we were in route. As soon as we got on the highway, the rain started and did not stop the entire day. Unfavorable. We reached Bigfork at the same time we notice the huge lake next to the road. We followed the sign for the historic section and found the appropriate area which ... read more

Today we ventured to the East side of the park. Since the Going to the Sun Road is not open yet (due to clearing snow), we were unable to travel through the park to the east side, so we had to go around the park. It was a long drive, but scenic. All along the way, we followed the railroad tracks. The area is very active with trains. We saw train trusses, train bridges, train tunnels through the mountains, cargo trains, Amtrak trains, everything trains. The route took us through a small section of Glacier titled Goat Lick. We stopped to see if any goats were out for they like that area due to the salt content on the mountain side (hence the name) but were not there at the same time as they were. So ... read more

Our Glacier National Park trip began today and it started out in the dark. We had the alarm set for 3:15am for our early flight, but for some odd reason our power went out around 2:30am. What's worse than having to get ready at 3am for a flight - getting ready at 3am in the complete darkness. Can't see what we forgot to pack and can't even see what we might look like after an attempt to be presentable using a flashlight. And as luck would have it, the power came back on as we were heading out the door. Pretty typical for me. We made it to our flight with no other issues and changed planes in Chicago. I guess I can technically say I have been to Illinois now. We landed safely in Kilespell, ... read more

Looking out the window is how most of the day was spent. Looking out the window and watching the beauty all around us. Looking out the window and reminiscing on the week we have had. Looking out the window taking in every last view that I could. Today began the trek back home, the end of the adventure. So we packed up all our luggage, loaded the truck and hit the road one last time. We decided to take a longer route and go back through the park for our drive into Billings, MT. We saw more elk and bison and then before we drove out of the park, we saw a large crowd gathered. We stopped and joined the last park camera party. After joining in like we belonged there, we learn they were watching ... read more

Today we decided to give finding Bullwinkle another shot. We got up extra early and went back into Yellowstone and began our search for more wildlife. It did not take long to locate the elk. We saw a group of photographers perfecting their skills with their extra long lenses at one of the elk sites. Another elk herd we came upon had 2 bulls which we expected to see some friction between the two, but they both remained calm. One kept to himself and the other with his herd of does, so no dominance illustration was warranted. We continued on searching and found many bison along the way and even encountered a couple of bison jams. We made our way to Hayden Valley where we ran into the WSC (Wolf Stalkers Club) again. We joined them ... read more

Today we took a break from the parks and wildlife hunting and went to visit a couple of ghost towns. We did not have any special suits or ammo to battle any ghosts, but we went to the towns regardless. We did not get up early like other days and took our time through out the day. It was needed as we were all still tired from yesterday's hike. The route from our cabin to the ghost towns took about 1 and a half hours - taking us through Idaho for a bit and then back into Montana. We passed by lakes, ranches, cabins, pastures, mountains and some of the best scenery around. Montana roads have the best views and if all roads had views like that, I could just ride forever. We arrived in Virginia City ... read more

We got up extra early today for we had plans that required an early departure. To my surprise the rest of our crew got up right after I did with no prodding and no complaining. We were tackling a long hike and wanted to be in the park early enough to see the wildlife before the hike. The wildlife likes to come out right at sun up and right after sun down. So we were there waiting at sun up and the animals did not disappoint. We were all up, showered, dressed, and packed before I knew it. I made us a gourmet lunch - well as gourmet as PBJ sandwiches can get and we were ready to go. As soon as we pulled out of the cabin area we were greeted by 2 buck deer ... read more

Today we went moose hunting, fully armed with cameras in hand. We were in search of a big bull moose, we named Bullwinkle. We searched for him last year during our visit but did not find him. So we thought we would try again today. After breakfast at our cabin lodge, we headed in to the Grand Tetons National Park. It does not matter how many times you see those mountains, they are magnificent and cause you to stop and take in their glory each and every time. It wasn't long after entering the park that we stopped at a pullout in hopes of finding some wildlife. After we got out of the truck a lady told us there was a huge moose down there. A huge moose? Awesome! Just what we were looking for. So ... read more

Today we drove around and through Yellowstone park. After our experience with the altitude yesterday, we chose to not do the planned hike for the day. A little disappointing but felt it was necessary. We started out in Lamar Valley which is known for its wildlife. It wasn't long before we saw a large group gathered with many cameras out, so we decided to join the camera party. We searched the area but did not see anything. So we started talking to some of the people standing there and realize they are watching wolves. This must be the same secret wolf watching club we ran into last year. I call them the 'Wolf Stalkers Club'. Membership grants you unlimited communication with other members so you always know where the wolves are and where they are going ... read more

Today was the beginning of this fall's wilderness trek. It began in Atlanta, GA and ended in Silver Gate, MT. After an early morning wake up, a visit through Atlanta airport, Denver airport and Billings airport, we meet up with our traveling companions. Along for the adventure this year is David, Peggy, Linda, and myself - all family and all eager to see what the week has planned for us. Being that most of the day was spent either on an airplane or in an airport, our only goal for the day was to drive the Beartooth Highway and stop in Silver Gate MT for the night. So after lunch, purchasing a few snacks - for snacks are essential on any trip - we did just that. But our plans were almost thwarted for Mother Nature ... read more
