April 20th 2012

I arrived in Sydney earlier this afternoon and concluded my two week tour of the east coast of Australia! I've had a brilliant time, met lots of interesting people and learned a lot about Australia, I've also done my fair share of partying of course. I'm now staying at the Wake Up hostel on Pitt Street for 5 nights which takes me up to Wednesday 25th April, also known as Anzac Day for aussies. It's their national memorial day for veterans and it's held on 25th April every year as that's the first day that Aussies/Kiwis served for their country in it's own right, as opposed to serving in the British army. Apparently it's a big deal and there's usually a lot of drinking and gambling as well as the standard memorial services, so I plan ... read more

Noosa, Brisbane and Surfer's Paradise. Noosa was amazing, we went to Fraser Island and swam in a freshwater lake (MacKenzie). Today we drove through Brisbane and I had the most amazing sushi for lunch with mango and pineapple tea - yum! Unfortunately Marie left the tour there, so now I'm just hanging out with the tour guide and the driver most of the time! Now I'm at a hotel in Surfer's Paradise which charges loads of money to use the internet, hence the super short sentences! Tomorrow I'm spending the morning here and then at 2:30pm we're driving down to Byron Bay and the day after that I'm going hand gliding! Eep! I'm so excited, skydiving is a step too far but hand gliding sounds just lovely. Gotta run! Love you!... read more

Hi everyone! Sorry it has taken me such a long time to update you, I've been on a coach tour and my schedule has been really full! At the moment I'm in a hostel in Noosa, I managed to get a few minutes to myself before dinner. Yesterday we spent the day at Kroombit Farm, which is a working cattle farm right in the middle of the country. I went horse riding and helped on a 'goat muster' which was pretty awesome. I've also spent three days sailing around the Whitsundays and staying on South Molle island, which was beautiful. My cold has almost completely gone now, just got a little bit of a cough left over but I feel fine. I think I have given it to another girl on the tour though, oops! I'm ... read more

April 8th 2012

Hey everyone! This is another super quick update I'm afraid, they charge to use the PC's at the 'Hide Hostel' (where I'm currently staying) so I don't have time to upload any photos or anything. I arrived safely in Cairns yesterday and went straight to 'Gilligan's Backpackers Hostel' where my Gold Coast tour was due to start the next day. Gilligan's is a party hostel, full of skanky British twenty-somethings. I managed to get some sleep though and a couple of the girls in my dorm took me out to find some food. Good Friday is not a good day to turn up! Nothing was open apart from the occasional bar. This morning we all met in reception to get on the bus and head up to Port Douglas to learn about the Australian aboriginal lifestyle/heritage. ... read more

My first two days in Singapore. (Written on Tuesday 3rd April, published on Wednesday 4th April). I arrived in Singapore at around 7:30am yesterday morning and arrived at the Little Red Dot hostel shortly after. The airport here is lovely and the taxi driver was super nice and knew exactly where I was going, which is lucky as I was completely fried after the plane journey. I slept the whole way and I never sleep when I'm flying normally so I must've been exhausted! No surprise I suppose, I was awake until 5am the morning before, partying on Unawatuna beach with my Sri Lankan buddies! There was a huge electrical storm underway when I landed, which looked amazing from the sky but a little scary, forks of lightning aren't what you need to see when you're ... read more

April 2nd 2012

I arrived in Singapore early this morning, safe and sound. I spent the morning wandering around, getting a bit lost, just taking it all in! The people here are super friendly, the weather is nice this afternoon but it was stormy this morning when I arrived. Starting to form some plans already. Another girl in my dorm arrived today too so we've been trying to combine some of our ideas, her name's Steph and she's from Stuttgart. I think we're going to the 'night safari' on Thursday which is meant to be amazing. Anyway, I just wanted to leave a quick note so everyone knows I got here in one piece! Hope everything's ok at home... Missing you all! Love Streets. xxx... read more

As I mentioned in my previous blog, Amie and I managed to squeeze in a visit to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage right before she left on Monday afternoon. Pinnawala is one of the biggest tourist landmarks in Sri Lanka. There are about 70 elephants living there in semi-wild conditions, but they are closely monitored by mahouts. People come to Pinnawala to see the baby elephants and watch the herd bathe in the river. Unfortunately it's a government run program, and is not managed with elephant care in mind but finacial gain. There is no breeding program at Pinnawala (although it claims to have one), so the elephants there are at risk of becoming inbred. I'm glad I visitied Pinnawala, and the elephants are super cute of course! But it's a shame that they don't have a ... read more

Hikkaduwa beach weekend! Hi everyone! This weekend Amie,Tamsin, Jonathan and I travelled down to Hikkaduwa beach, which is down in the southern province of Sri Lanka about 10km from Galle. We decided that after our extremely active and somewhat torturous hiking weekend that we deserved a chilled out trip this time around! We left at 11am on Friday morning and headed to Colombo on a public AC bus. They have 3 different standards of public buses here; your standard public buses, then slightly posher ones and then your top of the range Sri Lankan AC buses. To be completely honest, they're all pretty horrendous! Anyway, it took about 3 hours to get from Kegalle to Colombo, and from there we switched onto another bus to Galle which stops in Hikkaduwa on the way, which takes another ... read more
