Lake Placid November, 2006 The weather remained unchanged from Montreal, but that was the only similarity. Lake Placid certainly will see the return of moi next year. I felt more at home in this town of 3,000 inhabitants than in a town with millions. Go figure..or just go figure skate :) Had the opportunity to walk around Mirror Lake getting soaked and soaking in the views. Whiteface Mt was not making an appearance during my stay, but I'm sure we will meet soon. ... read more

Montreal November, 2006 What is the old saying, 'you win some and you lose some'. I believe this to be a good analogy for this quick getaway to Montreal and Lake Placid. Despite all my efforts, the city and I did not connect - even the weather was uncooperative! I walked around the city thinking about how soon could I leave instead of finding a synchronicity with Montreal. For the first time, I truly felt like a tourist - not a good sign while I'm on vacation. Wherever I travel, I try to find time to visit the local botanical garden or park. In this case, The Montreal Botanic Garden, even in November a garden of this caliber is something to see. As with the city, I was completely underwhelmed during my visit to the Garden. ... read more

On a rainy Tuesday night, I braved the rush hour madness that decends daily upon the city to join the several hundred concerned citizens gathering at the "Ballroom at the Ben" for a 3 hour meeting of political discourse and thoughtful discussion. Speaking at this event was Dennis Prager, Hugh Hewitt and Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum. As usual, I was the lone democrat in the audience. This is a fairly common occurance for me, a kind of side-effect of being in a political minority. After each of the speakers completed their monologues, they turned to the audience soliciting questions. Unfortunately, I was not able to get my hands on the microphone in order to ask my questions - Grrr. While I did respectfully disagree with a one or two points raised in the messages they were ... read more

More images from a brief visit to Longwood. The weather finally allowed for time outdoors - the past few weeks have been miserably hot and humid. Today was a clear, blue-sky day, with low humidity and a cool breeze. So there I was with hundreds of other garden enthusiasts taking in the sights at Longwood. Oh joy - Is it very selfish to want these tourists to pack up their annoying spawn and leave?? A few days ago, I purchased a 1 gig SD card for the my Nikon Coolpix. I've been dealing with a 128mb SD card that I bought along with the digital camera - talk about applying conservative values! I brought my Canon SLR along only to find out I left the film at home and the batteries were drained. Grrr! I took ... read more

First Friday in Old City was the perfect way to celebrate Russ's birthday! Hosted by the Old City Arts Association since its 1991 inception, First Friday is a unique cultural event in Philadelphia and one of the city’s most popular evening escapes. Held the first Friday of each month, this arts community “open house” brings together city dwellers and suburbanites, contemporary arts and antique collectors, aficionados of classical and contemporary design, and theater and performance buffs. The welcoming informality of First Friday attracts crowds of casual browsers as well as buyers to each festive event, with dozens of galleries and cultural organizations of Old City hosting receptions and exhibition openings. ... read more
