Sunday was our last day on the Costa Brava. After another delicious breakfast and a warm send-off from the owner, we headed back to Girona with a few stop offs at some beaches. After all, they're right there, and it's COLD back in Minnesota! While I was in BCN I found out there was a chimpanzee sanctuary in Girona and we managed to get a time on Sunday! Sanctuaries aren't zoos. Only a few people can visit each day and you take an educational tour to learn about the lives before and now, of these animals. They rescue chimps from bad living conditions - in this case, it includes some chimps used in a commercial for I think MCDONALDS who were chained in dark cages in a truck when not filming. I support several rescue operations ... read more

Wednesday was our least active day. We went to the Picasso museum in the morning and i'm glad we did. We almost skipped it because we had heard it was not as nice as the one in Paris which we have already been to. But I read it had his renditions of Las Meninas and our Spanish book talks about how Picasso did his own versions of that masterpiece so I thought it would be cool to go and check it out. The other thing we liked was the chronological set up of his work. We went to Muntjuic after, heading for the Miro Foundation. But we didn't really have a clear plan of what all to do here, so we just kind of wandered after visiting the Miro site. We took the funicular from the ... read more

Saturday was more medieval towns and a stunning beach. I'm sorry to say I don't even remember the names of each town. But we took a picture of one town map so we know that one. Our main destinations were the Gala castle, where Dali's love of his life lived, and then on to Figueres to the Fundacion Dali. (this museum/theater is the largest surrealist object in the world!) And for beaches, we went to one with a big rock in the distance that we kept seeing from Begur. So for today, the pictures can speak for themselves! And this is just a tiny fraction of the pictures we took - as usual, there was a feast for the eyes every minute!... read more

Friday was sunny and gorgeous. Perfect weather for checking out Spain's Costa Brava (the wild coast). After our delicious breakfast in a cozy setting at our hotel, we drove down to Sa Tuna and parked. We tried to walk to Aiguafrada. I'm not sure if we got there or not. But every beach is gorgeous, and there is walkway built between them. Around noon we went back to our hotel and up to the castle. We also went to the town of Pals this day, and to more gorgeous beaches in the Begur area. Sorry I can't name them all - you can't go wrong on a beach in this area! We were almost always alone or practically alone, as this was off-season, but we were blessed with sunny skies! At one beach we had a ... read more

We walked to the AutoEurope office on Corts Catalanes. It was an ok walk, we had our luggage to pull behind us. It was also easy to head straight out of town on this main drag and easy to find Girona. Parking was a bit trickier but we eventually gave up and went into an underground parking not far from the center of town. One thing we have found on our travels, mainly in France, is you can never follow signs to the tourist information office. The signs are misleading. Girona was no exception, but we finally found it. It's a lovely little town with a cathedral, Jewish quarter, Arab baths and a river. We enjoyed wandering around. We ate lunch on their Ramblas even though that's not usually the best place, and it was fun ... read more

The weather forecast said Tuesday would be the best day for sun in the area so we chose Tuesday to go to Montserrat, since it's been said it isn't even worth it on a cloudy day. We metro'd to the train station and they have machines there that sell the combo train/funicular ticket and even people to help you if you need it. The train was a comfy ride. When you first arrive you go in for a little video and then there's a small museum. IT had been cloudy on the ride up and when we came out of the museum, it was totally foggy. We had a light lunch overlooking - FOG- and then went inside the church, which is gorgeous. There was a LONG line of people waiting to see the Black Virgin ... read more

March 22nd 2010

Monday we headed to Placa Catalunya and Las Ramblas. I don't get this street. It is all tourists so why are they selling animals and birds? Well, the flowers were pretty. Although we had read the numerous warnings about pickpockets here, we felt as safe as anywhere else we have travelled. As you can tell by our photos, there is nothing about us that suggests money. Our main goal was to eat lunch at the Boqueria, and that was fun. We ate at Pinoxo's, good food and service, and I helped out fellow clients who did not speak Spanish. It was also fun to wander the market - like a giant farmer's market. There is a cool dragon sculpture along the way and the Miro tiles. We hit a few little placas and headed up to ... read more

March 21st 2010

Sunday was our day to just wander the Gothic quarter, with no major sights to see. Again we took the metro. We were just a few blocks away from the Monumental stop. We got off at a stop equidistant from Santa Maria del Mar and the Cathedral and decided to head to Santa Maria first. (We knew that because a very friendly traffic cop told us when I asked. ) They were at the Gospel part of Mass so I thought we'd stay - the priest was reading in beautiful Spanish. But when he started the sermon he switched (actually I think it was a different priest) into Catalan so we just looked around a bit more and headed up to the Cathedral. At the cathedral they were getting ready for Mass. Pat went outside to ... read more

SAturday morning we walked up to Sagrada Familia but just took pictures of the outside. The lines were already long to enter and since it was just a few blocks from our apartment we figured we'd get back another day. It's really impressive even on the outside! Next we walked all the way to another Gaudi masterpiece, La Pedrera. It was nice and sunny while we walked around on the roof. Pat was very interested in all the use of natural light. We just walked by the other Gaudi house that costs more to enter, and then back to our apartment to pack a lunch. We weren't sure where we could catch a bus to Parc Guell so we walked back to the Gaudi houses where we had seen bus stops for bus 24. It drops ... read more

March 19th 2010

THis was our second trip to Spain but our first to Barcelona, a city I have always wanted to visit! Our flights were fine, on time and non-eventful. We left MPLS at 7:20 pm and flew to Chicago, and overnight to Heathrow. From Heathrow it was a few hours to BCN. We treated ourselves to a taxi since we didn't know the metro system, we had luggage, and it was getting dark out. So it was actually Friday the 19th by the time we arrived in Barcelona, and there was no one there to let us in our apartment. It was dark and I started out looking for a phone booth. ( I speak Spanish and my husband doesn't!)I stopped in a little paper store and she directed me to one, but it didn't say how ... read more
