Ghost street
Ghost street
The wide open street where the train would have gone down the middle, with the weight station at the end. Now most of the buildings are closed.
Tim Version: * Double bussed my way to Quirigua, found one of the two hotels, settled in. * Visited it's ruins and crazy big banana plantations and saw my first "banana crossing"! The version with "bananas in pyjamas" stuck in its head: The way to get to Quirigua is through 2 buses changing at an intersection that seems to serve that sole purpose. A helpful spot, the workers there seem to know every bus route to anywhere and are incredibly helpful! The bus helper I asked in Chiquimula about Quirigua came from there so was perfect for information and told me [View Full Entry]

Tim Version: * Entered Guatemala through Anguiatu, beautiful easy crossing, and bussed to Chiquimula. * Checked out the Copan ruins with its incredible inscriptions, and Esquipulas. The version that already misses El Salvador: I entered Guatemala from El Salvador (A country that I miss already!) from the Anguiatu border crossing, near where Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala meet, and it was a beautiful easy crossing. Very early, 7am so no-one around to hassle and the border officials all quite happy and unjaded. Its a pretty border crossing over a short bridge, and it has mountain [View Full Entry]

Hello Guatemala
Just lazing around
Copan ruined steps

Tim Version: * Returned to San Salvador for my last stint in El Salvador and to check out some sights close to it. * Said a very sad goodbye to both Eve and El Salvador - long term travel´s huge downside of having to leave all you´ve fallen in love with over and over again. The version mixed with happiness, sadness, excitement, and a whole other soup of emotions: The return to San Miguel ended up being quite a luxurious bus ride, at 6:30am I might add which I thought was fairly impressive as yes I get up early but not [View Full Entry]

If only it weren´t for the noisy church over the road...
... or Gorilla War according to the museum! Tim Version: * Took a colectivo from Gotera to Perquin - my first one! Stayed in an average hostel. * Looked around town and the museum - a little disappointed and sad! The version I wish I didn´t have to write a big negatively, but its the only truthful way: Perquin! Famed Perquin! Or at least it is if you are heading to El Salvador. A hotbed and control point of the rebel geurillas of the FMLN, its where the museums in San Salvador and elsewhere tell you to go if you want [View Full Entry]

A natural little spider cave

Tim Version: * Traveled to Cacaopera along a bumpy as hell bus ride after a struggle with bus times in San Miguel. * Stayed at the Mayan Medicine Man´s place, swam in a beautiful pristine river, and found Eve to be truly loved by nature. The version that almost had to sleep in the streets of Cacaopera: Leaving San Miguel, we had a real struggle at the bus station. Everyone was pretty wasted from the night before, and asking bus times we kept getting wrong directions, wrong bus times, and nonexistent buses! It took us nearly 3 hours to catch a [View Full Entry]

One way to fence your house!
Wish I could abseil those...

Tim Version: * Bussed to San Miguel with an overnighter in San Salvador, stayed first night in a prostitute hotel. * Moved 2 more times to different hotels, drank and watched the party start to crank for days, then slept through the big finale! The version that doesn´t regret but still can´t believe we slept through the best part: Leaving Tacuba, we headed back to San Salvador hoping to make the trip in a single day, but not in that much of a rush we arrived in San Salvador a bit late to make it to San Miguel, so headed instead [View Full Entry]

Tim Version: * Went back through San Salvador, got Eve a backpack to replace her suitcase, then moved on to Tacuba. * Met up again with some friends from Sunzal, did an incredible trek involving many waterfall jumps, followed by chilling with a view thats beautiful beyond words and good coffee and food. The version that hopes to try and convey just how incredible Tacuba is: From Sunzal we cooked and scoffed what food was left (well... I did anyway. I think for breakfast I ate half a dozen pancakes, toast, fruit, yoghurt and maybe some other stuff, and nearly popped) [View Full Entry]

A church in San Salvador
Entrada Bonita

Tim Version: * Changed hostal to Dizzys "El Hostal", got very very comfortable. * Partied in San Salvador, saw ruins, surfed, chilled, got to know and be close to Eve. The version that follows no chronological order - as the name says, its a mush: Its funny moving from one hostel to another, especially right next door! It feels downright treacherous, but damnit I wanted a fridge heh. And man it was worth it! I packed that thing day after day with food, loving having dairy and meat to cook with again! Its funny trying t explain the hostel you´re at [View Full Entry]

Doesn´t it make you just wanna dive in for a paddle?
Tim Version: * Bussed to El Sunzal, knees quivering with excitement, and found it just as good as I had hoped! * Checked in to a hostel and put my feet up... in front of world class surf, palm trees and bikinis of course. Life can be hard sometimes eh? The sunny, warm, curving breaks version: Public transport here is pretty easy. Its a mixture of Nicaraguan chaos and organised bus numbers and monitors (making sure they are on time). Buses have numbers yes but they´re still as far as I can tell privately owned an run. With numbers and destinations [View Full Entry]

Welll as close as I could get today... but it was close enough to tide me over for one more day.
Tim Version: * Breathtaking views on the bus ride from San Miguel to San Salvador, unfortunately with a loud preacher for most of the ride! * Found San Salvador to be incredible! I love this city! El Salvador and El Salvadorians, once again brilliant. The version that I´m so happy to write in direct opposition to the Lonely Planet entries: Maybe El Salvador has changed in a big way since last year when the guide should have been written, or maybe there is some other legit reason, but the guide book could not be more wrong! Anyway, thats not what I'm [View Full Entry]
