Arriving in Melbourne, we were welcomed by my lovely parents! What a treat to see them half way across the world! Over several prior phone conversations, I convinced them to travel ‘our way’ so they rented a camper van and off we went. We spent 6 days on the Great Ocean Road before we parted ways. To our surprise, the week started out with an extreme heat wave of 40 degree weather, and ended with some nights getting to about 8 degrees! They have some seriously crazy weather over here! During the time with my parents, I discovered a truly amazing fact about my dad: he is the energizer bunny on high speed!! Always wanting to walk, drive, sight see, and never sit down! 7am to 9am… or longer if we would allow him! It was ... read more

So since I have been MIA for a while, I have a lot to catch you up on! The past 2 months have been filled with adventures. To Start: The big road trip! We started on Dec 28th, and were on the road until February 2nd Since it was such a long trip, I’ll tell you about the highlights and some pictures from the first half, through New South Wales and continue with the rest of it in another post! So here goes, the most exciting events of our trip - Sleeping in a really dingy motel on our first night because all the campsites were full - Setting our tent up for the first night (of camping) at the bottom of a hill : it rained ALL night long, and we woke up to a ... read more

35 degree weather, shorts, tanks, and bather’s worn to the mall for Christmas shopping does not exactly make it feel like Christmas on this side of the world! None the less, we had a great Christmas over here! We spent Christmas day on the beach surfing and enjoying our new ‘sun shelter’ as well as many other ‘goodies’ sent from home (thanks!). Christmas dinner was held at my new house! With the help of some friends, it was a very successful dinner! Delicious food and great company! Neat to experience a Christmas over here, but I missed everyone back home too… Now that the Christmas rush is over, I will be starting a road trip down to Melbourne to meet my parents when they arrive! I am very excited to see them, as well as to ... read more

So while I write this, you should all know it’s about 30 degree’s outside, and I am sitting my porch enjoying the view of some palm tree’s, the beach, ocean and boardwalk! Now if that doesn’t make you jealous, I don’t know what will!! Within the last month many exciting things have happened! Most importantly…I finished my practice teaching placement and began my summer vacation. The first week was spend mostly just on the beach in 40 degree weather and surfing everyday! (see picture of my new surf board!) The last 2 weeks Sara and I spent in New Zealand. Quite the change from the weather in Australia, but overall, it is a very beautiful country and was a fantastic trip! Some highlights from the trip include - Living in a van - Driving on the ... read more

These last few weeks of mine have been spent living the life of a real teacher. I am at school everyday from 8am to 4pm, teaching and writing lesson plans… which doesn’t leave much time for anything else!! I am enjoying my time with the kids, as they are very adorable! In my prep class (kindergarten) we have been studying passports and each week we study a different country. The first week we ‘went’ to Canada and got to make some pumpkin pie in class! Very cute and delicious! Some interesting things I have noticed that are different from the school’s at home are - Their accents make it really difficult to correctly spell words (eg Mother is Motha, Saw is Sar) - They all have to wear hats outside to play- and the no hat, ... read more

Side Note*** The captions and pictures are all messed up, and I can't figure out how to get them right... but after multiple tries, unfortunately you are just going to have to deal with it! Almost at the 3-month mark now and time is just flying by! Life has been pretty busy lately with wrapping up classes and assignments before I start my first day of practice teaching… Tomorrow! Dun, Dun, Dunnnnn. I’m pretty excited and a bit nervous at the same time! I am going to be in a kindergarten class at a near by Montessori school. Should be a great experience and I hope to learn all I can from it! In the mean time, we have been adventuring around quite a bit lately!! Aside from the many days spent at the beach surfing ... read more

I am officially a true Australian tourist- we took surf lessons this last weekend on the local beach! It was a ton of fun! Luckily, one of our dear old Canadian friends is an avid surfer, and taught us all for free! The surf shop across from the beach rented us boards for $30 for 24 hours…cheap entertainment I’d say! We split two boards between about 6 people, which was more then enough because surfing is exhausting! The actual getting up on the board was not so bad, it’s just getting back out against the killer waves. Needless to say, the weekend we picked to learn had the biggest waves I have seen since being in Australia! (The pictures do not do the waves justice). We braved them any way, and I actually managed to successfully ... read more

So this last weekend all Canadian students in the Education program at USC got a FREE trip to Fraser Island! Free you say? Of course we all took advantage and signed up right away! Aside from the 6am bus departure on Saturday morning it was a great trip! Fraser is the worlds largest sand island (bigger then Singapore) and absolutely stunning! Team “we’re better then you” is the name of our group that traveled on the same bus for the weekend. (see picture). On Saturday we did a ton of exploring! We stopped at a rainforest for lunch with a silent river flowing through it. We were served steak, fish and sausages, as well as just about every kind of salad you can think of! Great food for a free trip! We then ventured on to ... read more

I have officially completed my first week of school in Australia!! I won’t go on too much about the school part, because basically it’s all the same- go to class, do some readings and assignments and try to stay awake! Since I don’t have any classes on Friday’s, Jocelyn and I decided to take a long weekend trip to Brisbane for the weekend before the assignments start piling in! Some highlights from my Brisbane trip include South Bank- a beach in the middle of the city, a small shopping spree with many sales, a trip to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary and a night out in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane’s most ‘happening’ place! Due to the cooler weather, we didn’t get to actually sunbathe on the beach, but we did enjoy a nice stroll through the markets and ... read more

Thanks for reading everyone, I am loving the comments and hearing what you all are up to! Keep it coming! I have officially started orientation at school! It is nothing too exciting and pretty boring. There have been 2 lectures that I had to attend and a few free lunches and that’s about it! Since it’s been pretty slow around here we decided to spice things up a bit and head to the Australia Zoo. What an AMAZING place!! I could not even tell you my fav part of the trip- it was all so exciting. The animal are much more ‘interactive’ here, unlike the Toronto Zoo where they just feed them, here they play with them, make them do tricks and ‘egg them on’. The Croc show was pretty neat to see, as well as ... read more
