I’m going to put yesterday and today together because both entries are relatively short/I want to catch up. Yesterday we did one of the free tours of Madrid, but first things first, we had a super long convo with our buddy Miguel because he had to tell us all the important things to see in Madrid lol. He took our map and literally drew all over it, putting giant Xs on everything we had to do lol. Too adorable. We also talked about Canada and what life is like back home – and how cold it is in winter hahaha, he thought we were crazy. He talked about how he plays the violin, about what he’s doing here in Madrid (lessons and just playing on the street with some friends) and he asked about music and ... read more

(Forgot a bit of our convo last night! We were asking our fav staff guy about going to the airport – he gave us like 5x different ways to get there ranging from a taxi to the chicken bus (where locals can literally bring chickens) to walking. Oh my, we couldn’t stop laughing) After all that, we were kind of bummed to leave our hostel this morning – the staff were so fantastic with us and the social aspect of the hostel was just top-notch. We said goodbye to the woman that’s always there cooking – big goodbye with her, she was a sweetheart. Our fav guy at the hostel brought us out to get a taxi and negotiated the price for us so we wouldn’t have to – we were so pleased haha. He gave ... read more

Ok, I'll post the real update tomorrow - Em and I are too busy with our new best friend Miguel. He speaks no English and hardly any French and we're basically playing charades because he's telling us his life story while visiting Madrid to play the violin. He is amazing x100 ahahahaha. We can't stop laughing. Real update tomorrow!... read more

Well, we had the best of intentions to see the palaces today... butttttt the heat got the best of us. We spent the afternoon reading and enjoying the heat from inside the riad. Em sat on the roof and took in the heat, while I contented myself on the ground floor/lobby which is still open but fully in shade. We headed out at 3pm thinking it would be a little less deadly... and by less deadly it was an ever so cool 50 freakin’ degrees. Like baking our everything in every way imaginable hot. We walked up to McDonald’s to get a McFlurry – the amount of sweat we pooled is just beyond ridiculous. Again, 50 degrees. Not. Good. News. Some taxi driver saw us and was like “too hot for you to walk” ... no ... read more

Well, we saw all sorts of interesting things today. And of course we were silly tourists and went out at 11am... so basically just in time for when it’s 10000000000 degrees out. And by that, I mean 48 degrees. Oh, it’s hot. It’s so hot you don’t even realize it’s hot. We walked up to the Mosque (which you’re not allowed in, but good reference point!) and then into the main square and all the stalls/souks. Holy, that was something. The main square is interesting... everyone comes up to you wanting to take a photo with you for money. Some are dressed up in costumes or native dress, some have monkeys (and like serious monkeys, no tiny wimpy monkeys here haha) and then there are the snake charmers. Oh the snake charmers. One of them came ... read more

(Sidenote from yesterday: forgot to mention that I got a grab-bag of goodies at the bakery!! I have no idea what anything is, but they were all good. I found my two favourites – those will be my treats for the rest of Morocco haha) So, very relaxed day today... which is a recurring theme for Morocco it seems. (Well, recurring theme on days we aren’t trying to find our hostels. Ahem.) I have to say it was nice to wake up and put pants on – it’s still super cold in the room and windy as ever outside. It was a little warmer today though, around 30 or so. We woke up and had some breakky, then just wandered around the Medina for a bit, but wandering off towards the bus station. It was nice ... read more

(Fun fact: it is freezing in Essaouira at night. I was wrapped up like a cocoon in my blanket last night.) I have sand in places I didn’t even know one could have sand. ‘twas a tad bit windy in Essaouira today! First things first, we had a pretty chill morning where we debated how to spend the rest of the week and such. We opted to have a few more days in Madrid which will be lovely I think :) We had decided today was going to be our beach day – unfortunately the weather didn’t see too keen on that. The wind was howling so bad, we could hear it inside. Didn’t stop us though – or in theory it didn’t. We headed out into the Medina for a bit first – went back ... read more

(I should preface this post by noting here that Moroccan people are fantastic – they are super nice and friendly. The problem here is the attack on the tourist – it’s that small segment of the population that really ruins the view and atmosphere.) So, I’m a little conflicted right now on my thoughts regarding Morocco. On one hand, I absolutely adore it... and on the other... yeahhhhhhh. Yeah. We had a lovely morning – I really do love our hostel in Marrakech – the staff are so friendly and helpful and it’s just a cozy and homey feeling. I’m glad we’re going back there each time we go back to Marrakech – it will be like coming home after our side trips :) We left our big bags and headed off in search for the ... read more

(I didn’t want to pay for internet yesterday and I used up my old card from Manchester, so here’s our last day of London mixed with our arrival in Morocco. Oh my goodness!) Yesterday was our “let’s hop all across London” day! We made good use of our day pass on the Tube. It was also a great day of nerdom. So much nerdom. Mostly on my part. First we headed up to King’s Cross to be Harry Potter nerds – we found Platform 9¾ which only had a few kiddos around, so it was easy to take pictures and be wizards for 5 minutes :). From there we went up to this cute little tea shop that was in one of the guides are hostel gave us – Em said the tea was really good, ... read more

Big walking day again today! But it was good fun :) We decided to walk up towards Hyde Park/Kensington area just to walk around and then head to the Museum of Science and Tech. Our walk took a little longer than planned because even though we were just supposed to follow one road we somehow ended up three streets over on a street not even on our map lol. Ah well, got to see some beautiful houses (and play frogger with taxi cabs) on the way up to Kensington Road. The Museum of Science and Tech was actually kind of a bummer. Well, that’s perhaps a little harsh... it was a great museum, but not what I was expecting I guess. I just really, really loved the Museum of Nature and so I guess I was ... read more
