Ok, here let's do this out of order. Have today first: Day 29: Paris - your metro still smells of urine, but I guess I missed you. . Short entry for today. After yesterday’s ordeal I was a bit jaded heading out this morning. So, I decided to shop... I rationalize that with the fact I do need some more work clothes. Ahem. Other than that I headed off to a nearby park and finished off my book before it was time for me to head off to catch my bus to good ol' Paris. Bus ride was same old - it was full, as Megabus tends to be... but that’s ok, it’s not an over-nighter haha. I was sitting beside a nice Australian girl so we chatted ... read more

As if I won't get enough rain over the next year in England, it rained most of the day again today. Actually, this morning was more of a torrential downpour. The hostel was leaking everywhere and our floor was partially flooded. Beautiful. Thankfully I was checking out anyway and the water didn't get in our room. The morning after a festival night is always a sight to see - so much garbage and beer cans and plastic cups. But they were in full cleanup mode. It was a weird vibe - rest of the city was quiet minus the street cleaners at work. I took this time to visit the churches though and wander through the quiet streets. Very charming city. I hadn't noticed these last night, but now I'm seeing them everywhere... these portapotty urinals ... read more

That is correct - for the second (if not third?) year in a row I have spent my birthday in transit. Silly moi. At least today was a reasonable trip - Amsterdam to Brussels, change to train for Gent. The bus ride to Brussels was lovely - I got two seats to myself, so I could kick back, relax and enjoy the scenery. (And the cows. So many cows. Oh. And the ponies. Cute little ponies.) As well, the original cast of Les Miserables provides an excellent soundtrack to a bus ride. Just sayin' (Sidenote: Tumblr has ruined "Red and Black" for me because instead of "the colour of despair", I now hear "black the colour of dis bear" along with the picture of a black bear. Sigh.) We hit really bad traffic about an hour ... read more

(Internet is pretty much still not working and worse than it was yesterday... so no photos for now. Hopefully Belgium brings better wifis) Right, so against my better judgement I went on a tour with "Tours and Tickets" ... their Marken, Volendam and Windmills one. Really, I should have just taken the time to plan the trip myself because although each location was beautiful - the tour hit pretty much all my tour pet peeves. Unfortunately, the wifi at the hostel is pretty much down (works for 2 min every... hour? haha) So, I sucked it up and paid. First stop was Maarken. The town was cute... but we didn't get to see much of it. We were herded along like cattle... ugh, the absolute biggest pet peeve of mine on tours. Such a pet peeve. ... read more

Laundry morning! Party in Amsterdam, wut wut. Ahem. I'm sharing a room with 5 very loud German girls... but they are sweet. This morning when I said I was from Canada one's like "HA! I KNEW IT!" To which another replied, "you saw the leaf on her bag... it's not hard to guess." Dorks. Since I did laundry, I didn't get out until around 1pm. The dryer... almost caught fire? It was smoking something horrible which is apparently "totally normal"... Yeahhhh, I think not. I took my clothes out - they can air dry thank you very much. I decided to "find my own way" to the Heineken Brewery... I am not one for maps, but apparently in Amsterdam it's kind of a necessity. (Their streets don't "go straight" like they don't run parallel, but kind ... read more

Sunburn update: The pools in Budapest did not turn me into a lobster. No, instead I'm only partially a raccoon. Not bad. Yesterday: I windowshopped in the morning - how adventurous, I know... but I had a bus to catch early afternoon and only had one metro ticket left... so I had to stay close to the hostel haha. Saw the best sign ever in my journey today - there was a prohibition sign on some (important?) building that showed not only are dogs mot allowed to pee, but neither are humans - who incidentally apparently also pee on their four legs. Fascinating. That is one sign I have never seen before haha. At the bus station (which I begrudgingly headed off to) was a homeless man with the two cutest dogs I've ever seen - ... read more

Ah, lovely day today! I finally made my way over to the Buda side of the Danube - you guessed it, I spent the majority of the day wandering :) I went up to Castle Hill where I spent most of my time. The views over the Danube and of Pest on the other side are just superb - especially of the bridges and of Parliament. I really can't get over how impressive those Parliament Buildings are... they truly are iconic. I also visited the "Hospital in the Rock" museum which was really cool! It is, as the name suggests, a hospital that was built into the rock, in Castle Hill, as part of the cave system and it was in use during WW2 and during the Revolution. How smart to build a hospital into a ... read more

Last night: I am having the best (/sarcasm) time with French people as of late. So, we had the train boys a few days ago - now - I have two French roommates. We had the following discussion after I said I was from Canada: Girl 1 (english): "Oh. So you can probably understand what we're saying?" Me: Uhm, yeah. I can... and I speak it too. G1 (english): "Ah. Yes. You speak French with funny words." Sigh... seriously? That is definitely the way to endear yourself to your roommate. *a few minutes later* G1 (in French to Girl 2): "She's from Canada - she speaks French." G2 (in French): "NO! A FRENCH CANADIAN! I LOVE YOUR ACCENT! OMG! TALK TO ME." Me (in French): Uhm... I don't know what to say to that...? G2 (giggling ... read more

(Note from last night: some random alarm went off 3 times between 12:30am and 1:45am. I wasn't asleep for the first... nor the last... but that second one scared the bejebus out of me. We were not a happy collective at the hostel. Oh. And literally as I'm typing this at 10:40pm... it just went off again. No. Bad hostel.) So, today was a very heavy day. I went to visit both the Holocaust Memorial and the House of Terror... yeah. So sorry, this one starts as a bit of a downer... I'll start with the House of Terror because I have less to say: it was the old headquarters of the Nazis and then the AVH (secret police) here in Hungary. I found it to be an odd style of a museum: every room had ... read more

Another day spent on a train :) I'm ok with that - more than ok. I love watching the world speed by, or slowly chug-a-long. Varying paces each with their own beauty. I love the slight sway of the cabin as you pass along the tracks; hearing the rumbling of the train, or the clickity-clack. I love passing through the villages; I love seeing people go by their lives, watching the old couples sit hand in hand, and I love the kids that wave at the train (you just have to wave back!) I love the scenery; I love that the train gives you a more "behind the scenes" view of a country's beauty than the highway does. I especially love the lakes and rivers - the tranquility of it all. I love whizzing through old ... read more
