July 10: Lazy day, Daughter concert Another busy lazy day? Haha. Short and sweet. First thing, I headed to Leinster Gardens. I had wanted to go beforehand but clearly now that they were mentioned in Sherlock, it was a necessity ;) It's quite something though, looking up at the facades - you have to pay attention to pick out the facades compared to the real houses. It's in the windows and the front doors. Very cool. For lunch I had to go grab my usual London treat and get a sandwhich and hot choco from Speedy's. Always good for a lunch break. Of course I couldn't resist the usual photo of "221B" where I noticed the knocker was crooked. Def made me smile. I was planning to head down to Waterloo or Blackfriars so o could ... read more

Europe July 9th 2014

I had both a lazy and a productive day! Good tourist day. (By the way no promises for London pics anytime soon because I only get back to the hostel around 11pm at the earliest each night so… yes.) Since I got back to my hostel past midnight last night, I was a little slow to get going today. I was starving and for some reason decided Borough Market would be a good idea at 10am... that's not exactly lunch time lol. So I kind of wandered around the London Bridge area and decided I'd have a market morning. I went up to Camden and spent an hour or so just wandering the stalls. I went back to Borough for lunch though - a duck confit sandwhich that just fell apart in your mouth. Perfect. Again ... read more

Back to London today! Feels so great - it’s like going back to my second home - I really have missed it terribly. I had a two hour wait at the train station, but I took the time to finish my book (“The Yellow Birds” - great read) and to watch some Y&R. Yes, my guilty pleasure lives on while I travel haha. Anyway, train ride itself was uneventful except for the fact it brought me back to my glorious London :) I really can’t pinpoint what’s so great about this city, but it is my honorary second home and of all the places I’ve been this is where I most enjoy coming back, so that must say something. But ugh, London hostels... one of the few things I despise here. I've stayed at some decent ... read more

July 6: Torquay lazy lazy day Nothing overly exciting today - the excitement had more to do with the hostel overnight than anything else. The room door doesn’t lock from the inside in this hostel (which I *HATE*) and sure enough at 6am this morning a super drunk guy came into our (female dorm) room. He’s like ‘uh sorry’ but then of course doesn’t leave because he’s drunk. He started trying to talk with one of the girls who was actually awake and as we started to wake up enough to be annoyed he offered us all beers. Seriously. No. Go away. We were not very polite in our request for him to get out. So, I wasn’t overly gungho this morning but nevertheless I headed down to the harbour and the coast for a nice ... read more

Off to Dartmoor today! So, I learned a lesson today - if you're in Dartmoor you need a proper GPS. Or a car. Or both haha. I got... not lost but stuck shall we say because I didn't want to keep going down some random valley in the bushes and get lost. There are no signs in the paths and there are a lot of intertwining ones so having the map with you doesn't even help… What a shame. Ok backtrack. I bussed up to Newton Abbot and wandered around the village for a bit - small and cute - before heading up to Haytor Vale in Dartmoor. Basically as soon as I started the hike I was like 'yep this won't end well' haha. Right from the start there are four paths generally going in ... read more

My wifi is back in action! I wrote short(ish) entries for the past few days I've been wifi-less and I'm throwing them all up at once. July 2: Lyme Regis, Monmouth Beach Adventure day! I have no wifi so I can’t plan anything so I literally went to the bus stand with no idea where I was getting off the bus haha. At least I knew I was taking the X53 because it’s their coastal route. That’s a start? While in line (bought a weekly pass, it’s cheaper) the older gentleman behind me noted: “Do I detect an American accent?” Sigh. Canadian. Canadiannnn. He was nice though - he’s been living here in Weymouth for 20 years now, so he told me how grand it was haha. He asked about my travels so we chit chatted ... read more

June 30: Brodick, Arran Island Back to the rural life I go - or at least more rural than Glasgow. I took the early train down to Ardossan Harbour to catch the ferry to Brodick on Arran Island. I had a lovely moment at the train station when I found Morrocan green and white iced tea which I forgot existed and I forgot I absolutely love. Yum. The ferry ride was relaxing - I had started outside but there were a lotttttt of little kids so I retreated to the indoors and their big comfy chairs. In Brodick I had originally planned on walking the coastal path to Goatfell and climbing the large mountain... however... I'm still feeling the effects from the Storr so I decided more mountain climbing might not be wise. I did walk ... read more

Europe June 29th 2014

So. Last night was interesting… so there was this old lady in my room and she was talking to another older lady for the better part of an hour - basically she was going on and on about how the cities are out to get you and psychiatrists are out to arrest you and kill you slowly behind closed doors. You see that's why she escaped from London - they wanted to lock her away... ahem. She's now trying to get to India to live and die on an ashram and then she went on about Princess Di's plan to overthrow the monarchy which is why they killed her you see. She also wanted to go to prison (as a suffragette) but instead was sent to a psychiatric hospital where they "disturbed her". And finally she ... read more

I’m mixing together the past two days because I had no wifi when I changed hostels and meh, such is life. (Also, I'm on a train and their wifi isn't strong enough for photos - so they're to come later.) June 27: The Old Man of Storr I headed out on the school bus again this morning lol, this time I was headed just north of Portree - to the Old Man of Storr. This time the bus actually drops you at the bottom of the mountain which is good (less of a hike) but also supremely daunting to look up and be like... oh... that is quite high, isn't it? I was also greated by a lovely sign that cautioned hikers that due to decay and bad weather that the top most part of the ... read more

Adventure day today!!!! I took the early bus up to Staffin via Portree. That was a hoot - from Broadford to Portree it was a school bus haha, God I love it here. At least it was high school kids. I got on my transfer and I love their local bus drivers - it's all rural so there are no actual "stops" you just tell them where you'd like to get off. And to get back on you just wave them down on the street. Good to know. The drive to Staffin was lovely - along the coast mostly, plus had some nice views of Old Man of Storr which is where I hope to go tomorrow... weather dependant. The bus left me off on the side of the “highway” and then started my 2 mile hike ... read more
