Piccies
Yeah, my dad was cute! And you should see some of the photos from Vietnam - seriously sexy! I shouldn't say that about my own father, but it's true. And my mom was a stunner. But a yellow dress??? Must have been the 70s....

Happy birthday!!!
Hey, happy birthday. My phone is just charging and I have a signal again so I can send you a happy birthday text. But here is a happy birthday message to keep you going! Yeah, his parents bedroom was cream and dark purple - just like the carpet in your house. And all the rooms were big. Like your house! There weren't pictures of clowns everywhere though.... You read such weird things. I am watching something weird. An allergic relief spray advert where Antonio Banderas does the voiceover for a bee. Surely he has enough money???

Piccy
What a fab pic of your folks!! Check your mum's smile - it lights up her whole face! Gorgeous! And as biased as I may be, your dad - what a stunner! :)

Elvis
Really? His parents' room reminds you of my parents' room. They'll be so chuffed. Also I just finished reading a book in which Elvis is now a vampire which explains the odd sightings.

Oh WOW!!!
What a time you are having!!! I echo 'Auntie Boobie' word for word - your writing skills are superb. I feel (and this is entirely subjective) that this is one of the very best times you've had - certainly the best of the blogs. But then, I do have a degree of vested interest, you might say. The photos of your folks (my big bro'!) really touched my heart and brought a little tear to the eye. I'm sure Auntie Boobie and Unkin Don were able to fill you in on so much of your parents life together before you emerged on the scene. Despite the change in hair colour for Bobbie, she and Don have hardly changed in 30 years - I would have recognised them anywhere. Love to Uncle David and Auntie Denny and have a really wonderful time with them. Oodles of love to you from us both - and keep the fantastic writing going!

Thanks Auntie Boobie
Thanks for the advice. I might take it, or I might wait for the next nugget of wisdom! As long as it doesn't involve any waiters! Love you.

so enjoyable!!
Jenny, if I never give you any more advice (that will never happen), I must say, "writing is your gift from God" If you only knew what a gift and talent you have for putting music to words. You have the ability to paint the most beautiful portrait with words that I have ever read, your blog has really touched me Jenny, I feel that I have been on this trip with you since you left Memphis, girl! start thinking about writing....you have it babe!!

Dutch Newcastle
Apparently Newcastle slang is very close to Dutch, and the accent is somehow linked? Little Rock? Famous? Bill Clinton? Maybe. He wasn't from Little Rock itself, but maybe that's it?
31st August 2009

Accents
My parents and I met an old French guy in Brittany who had spent quite a lot of time in Newcastle. Quite the strangest accent I have heard in quite a while... Isn't Little Rock famous for something?

A book?
I have to say it take longer to write than I expect! My memory is so terrible that I have to sit for ages trying to remember what I've done! A book could be a moneymaker - save me having to find a job!
28th August 2009

Write a book!
Hi, Jan, You should write a book of your travels when you get back. it is all so interesting - and how do you ever have time to write it? But I do understand about "there's no place like home" - when I'm in NZ I'm homesick for UK and when in UK, homesick for NZ!!! (well sometimes, anyway)

Auntie Bobbie and Uncle Don
Nope, I'm still here, til Saturday....and SO MUCH laughter!

OK weather
Not just the wind came sweeping down the plain - but the rain came with it, too! Must have been just a touch scary. Good that the tornado didn't form, at least whilst you were in the vacinity. Nice to hear that you were able to drive through pretty countryside. Judging from the few pictures I've seen of OK it seems to be a green and gentle state. I'm sure the dust bowl exists somewhere but not, obviously, where you were. Do I take it that your visit with Don and Bobby is over and done with? Hope you had a good time with them - lots of fun and laughter, I'm sure.

So what's next Jen?
18th August 2009

things you missed in amarillo
you missed not only the giant muffler man, but also the pair of giant legs, the helium times column monument and the cadillac ranch, amongst others. http://www.roadsideamerica.com/search/tip. How did we miss using this website before? Well what do you know. Changing Woman is a Navajo legend. But yes she was weird! http://www.firstpeople.us/FP-Html-Legends/Changing_Woman-Navajo.html http://changingwomancafe.com/changingwoman.html Congratulations on finishing the disseration. Say hello to Gracelands.

Congratulations!
So pleased to hear you've finished your dissertation, and before the deadline, too! Have a great time crossing Oklahoma - watch out for that waving wheat and the hawk making lazy circles in the sky! God bless xoxoxoxo

American loos
I had forgotten about the construction of American loo doors until we got out there last year - quite disconcerting, isn't it? One is never quite sure if those walking past are doing just that - walking past and not peeping whilst one pees. The picture of the sculpture from Salt Spring Island reminds me of the most amazing Native art store in Vancouver where we spent a good few hours and wished we could have afforded several of the most beautiful sculptures, particlarly of polar bears - even one would have been nice, but SOoo expensive! Don't forget that in Oklahoma, not only does the wind come sweeping down the plain but the corn is as high as an elephant's eye so be careful not to get lost because nobody would be able to find you if you wandered off the highway!!
17th August 2009

Congratulations!
Congratulations on finishing your dissertation - you can get on with having fun now, without having that in the back of your mind as a distraction! I hope you have mentioned Amarillo in your acknowledgments! So, with fun, fun and more fun on the agenda, i'm looking forward to the next instalment even more than usual!! And lots of luck for your NY marathon training... at least if Betty Boy misbehaves again, you could run the rest of the way ;-) That would certainly be extreme training!!

Biscuits and gravy...
can't say it sounds appealing to me either. I'd recommend that you stick to the maple syrup, eggs and bacon... well, apart from the bacon - bleugh!

Dolly difficulties
Maybe Dolly and old Pam are related? Nicki Norman. Yes, the big outreach versus refuge debate. It's nice to hear some things never change! Am feeling very inspire right now. Although the AC has just kicked in and I can no longer feel the right side of my body.
12th August 2009

Mark and I have named our satnav Dotty, in honour of Pamela. We were actually pretty confident that Dotty could cope better than Pamela until I willfully ignored her for a whole five minutes today and she said "Turn right, turn right, RIGHT!". When I failed to comply she essentially went into a technological version of a sulk for the rest of the journey. I heard Women's Aid on radio 4 this morning- a lady called Nicky talking about outreach versus shelters. Hope inspiration reaches you in Amarillo for your dissertation.

Food!!
Zucchini apple cake sounds yum-yum!! Definitely recipe swapping time. Will see if I can find my recipe and send it along - it'll be interesting to see how similar/different it is from Sue's.

Dissertation
Yes, the dissertation has been a sore point for many...years now! Mad at myself for letting it drag on this long. Ugh. Chocolate zucchini bread is magnificent. I have the recipe from Sue. Doesn't look too complicated! And also the recipe for zucchini apple cake. We'll have to swap recipes.
