I'm interested to know how they police the missionary position law. And is the dress the one from that gorgeous shop in Santa Monica??

Auntie Mags...
As mentioned, my hiking trip finished couple of days ago. Meant to do the DC instalment before I left but procrastinated as always doing fun stuff! Now have about 800 photos of trees and leaves to sift through for the next blog. Fun, fun, fun on Long Island!

Military brat
It's funny you should mention about being a military brat. Certainly my travels this summer have given some idea of what life would have been like. USMC overload! Have loved it. Very proud it's part of my heritage.

Welcome back!
Hi, sweetie pie, it's good to have you back! Have really missed your blogs these last few weeks. It strikes me (pardon the pun!) that the missionaries in Virginia could do with a bit of 'the rule of thumb' treatment themselves!! You seem to have had your fill of 'militaria' on this leg of the journey. Does this make you feel like a 'military brat', even vicariously? Look forward to the next (new England) episode. Oodles as always. xoxoxo

Welcome back!
It's great to hear from you again. Holly and I were chatting last night, trying to figure when your 11 day hiking tour would be over and I'd get another wonderful installment of your trip. You look great - and a lot browner than you would have been, had you stayed in England for the summer. It sounds like your visit to Washington DC was wonderful - what an overdose of sightseeing in just three days. I don't blame you for not being excited by Virginia's historic triangle. Very touristic, and as you say, very English. I loved the descriptions of your latest fad - almost crashing the car, particularly your attempts to find the Arlington Cemetery. Really looking forward to hearing about the hike. On an English note: after a very dry September, it has started to rain at last, the trees are changing colour and many leaves are now carpetting the roads and lanes. For us, the summer that never was is over. It's been great sharing your summer with you. lots of love from us and from Auntie Holly and Uncle Laverne.

Memories of Jacksonville
How much has changed since that photo taken outside your house over 30 years ago! What memories it evokes. To echo what Auntie Mags has already said, your dad would mostly definitely be very proud of you and the beautiful woman you have become (we won't even mention the dried fruit!). I, also, am deeply proud to have you for my niece. Just a feeling, but it seems to me that you preferred South Carolina to North? Hope 'up North' lives up to your expectations. Oodles of love, as ever. xoxoxo

Name's sake
How cool is Duck? That's why I went there, and it was definitely the best choice. Nicest place on the coast. The street names totally freaked me out, though. How can you have Carolyn and Holly Streets just blocks apart??? A reminder that someone is looking down on, can't get up to too much mischief??!!!!

Rocking photos
I have tried to get photos of people hanging on their porches, but I don't have a long enough lens! I have to get too close and people like their privacy. What's that all about?!!

Dawson's Creek
I love you, just for that!! I must get the DVDs!
20th September 2009

Name's sake
I'm LOVING all the names! And I love that you went to a place called "Duck"! That really appeals to my sense of humour. hehe :D By the way, you take some truly stunning photographs. Beautiful. :) Enjoy!

What no banjos????
Loved the rocking chairs on the porch...but couldn't you wait till dusk, when the "folks" came out to play the banjos???? luvyaloads!

Spanish moss
So that's what it's called. We saw lots of this stuff hanging from the trees when we were in Georgia and wondered what it was -and now we know, curtesty of our niece's galavanting. We didn't stop to enquire when we were there as we were trying to get to the ariport to avoid a hurricane that was sweeping in! I love the picture of the single house - such an unusal idea of the door from the street opening onto the veranda - and the 'front' of the house being at the side. Adds to one's privacy considerably. Love the phonetic writing - one can just hear the accents as one reads - brilliant! Lots of love from us both. xoxoxo

Me? Spanish?
I am rather tanned. But probably no more than in California. The sun is out again today. Hmm, maybe just an hour on the beach before I leave?!

My father
I think my father would have found me quite infuriating! I still pick the dried fruit out of my food, and celery and peppers. I hear he got quite annoyed with Auntie Wendy for doing the same! My biggest accomplishment has been finding my ipod - I turned the apartment up and down all day to find it exactly where I left it. Typical!

Suntan
I'm surprised more people haven't talked to you in Spanish. You must be so dark by now- put some photos up!

Memories
The photo of the family outside the house, with my mum holding you, brought back floods of memories. Your father would have been so proud of you, the woman you've become and all you've accomplished, as evidenced by all the friends you have around the world. I'm proud to be your auntie. lots of love.

Keep 'em coming!
Once again, a wonderful glimpse into another American gem. I love your attempts to capture the accents - you do them very well. (Thank goodness I saw 'Forrest Gump', or I'd be lost!). You'll have to put all this in a book when you get home. Keep well, and God bless you. lots of love.

Photos
Yes, I can get copies of photos for everyone, but it may not be til I get back home. I don't have electronic copies of all of them, and I can't always get somewhere that does the copying. But definitely, I will sort it at some point!
7th September 2009

Jenuary...
YES, YES, YES, YES, YES in a Harry-met-Sally kind of way. I have been thinking about Jenuary already. Will e-mail the select few to see who is interested!

Remembering . . .
Your latest blog, as usual, is fantastic, and I agree with Bobbie that you should consider writing as an optional career. What struck me most was the photos of your dad, and mother. There is so much from that time that they spent in California that I know nothing about. The photo of Marten dressed up for the ball is stunning. I would truly like a copy of that one, and any others they may have given you. Remembering is a process of putting small pieces together to create a whole - "re - member - ing" - building up the memories by collecting together all the stories that different people have and creating the entity/member that we will remember. Thank you for sharing more of Marten with me. I still miss him.

parents
Hi Jenny, I really missed reading your blog while I was in N Wales (Anglesey) with my parents for just over a week around the bank hol. As you saw on FB, I had no TV or internet to keep me going (so couldn't keep up with your adventures). But I guess the lack of distractions meant we got loads of decorating done in my parents' new holiday flat (but the 'interesting' 70s decor means there's still a lot to do!). Anyway, hopefully we'll be finished in time for it to be considered as a possibility for the next Jen-uary weekend away! (although it's nowhere near as cool as a castle!!) Speaking of parents, was lovely to see a pic of yours and I have been trying to decide who you look most like, but failed, so i've settled for exactly half and half!! what do you think?? xx
