We had an early flight to Cusco, so we all had to be up nice and early. We had taken high altitude pills, and a bunch of us weren't feeling so good. Steve got sick on the plane and wasn't feeling good when we got to Cusco. He decided to stay at the hotel and rest while the rest of us got on the bus to visit some ruins. Our first stop was Chinchero, a small Andean Indian village that had some great views of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The buildings were made of adobe, and the locals were all dressed in traditional garb. It definitely made me feel like I'd stepped into a national geographic episode. Everything was vibrant and beautiful. I got to pet a sheep that was there too! However at ... read more

Today was the last day of clinic in Lima. We had thought about going, but the night before everyone said it ran smoothly and wasn't enough for everyone to do, so we decided not to go. Adam's dad was feeling better so he finally got to go to the clinic. Instead the four of us, plus Meropi went to Pachacamac, which is about 40km southeast of Lima. Since there were five of us we got a really nice van taxi with AC! The ruins were really cool. They are the ruins of 4 different civilizations: Lima, Huari, Ichma, and Inca. Our guide that we got was fantastic. He was very well informed and could answer all our questions. The site was really large, and a lot of it hasn't been excavated yet, so there is still ... read more

Today we wanted to go to some ruins, but they were closed so we ended up going to Barranco, which is a district just a little bit south (3-4 km) of Miraflores where we are. Adam's dad was feeling better and decided to join us. The five of us squeezed into a taxi. When we got there we walked around for a bit, and then went to the Museum of Electricity. It was small, but had some cool stuff in there. Lots of old technology -- old record players, phones, jukeboxes, ovens, etc. Also a jacob's ladder (which isn't as good as Adam's), a small Van der Graaf generator, and a theramin! Afterward we walked toward the beach, but reached a dead end, so we headed back and got some lunch at a small place that ... read more

We were so tired from the day before we decided not to volunteer with the Optometry students in the morning. When we got up and were headed out to get water at the store we found one of the students had gotten sick. We took her to the store with us to get some fluids and then headed back to the hostal. Adam and his sister were walking to the room when they heard someone say "hello" in their dad's voice, but Adam thought it was a guy working there who had passed them, but then the voice said again, "Adam." It turns out that their dad had also gotten sick. We got him some fluids and left him to rest. It's been a very long day. The flight to Miami was good, and so was the one to Lima, except that we got delayed an hour before take-off because no one had loaded the luggage onto the plane! oops. They loaded it pretty quickly and then we were off. We arrived around 11:30p and went through immigration/customs and started meeting up with the rest of the group. We ended up waiting about 2 hours outside by the bus for the rest of the group -- they were getting questioned about all the optometry equipment they were bringing in. The weather was warm and humid, especially for the time of night it is. We got to our hostal in Miraflores at about 3am. In the morning we are going on a city tour, but that's about all ... read more

We packed up our things and checked out at noon. We had the hotel store our bags and we set out to walk around. We were surprised to see some store's were open on Christmas. Our flight wasn't until 11pm, but Adam decided to check and see if there was an earlier flight. He found a direct flight home at 7pm (our original flight had a layover in L.A.). We discussed whether or not it would be worth paying the extra money to switch our tickets, and for about 200 NZ dollars for both of us, we were sold. We had lunch at a small park by the university and talked with the people at the front desk of our hotel to reschedule a pick up time to the airport. We got to the airport, got ... read more

Today it was back to the market. The British guy we had met yesterday had completed his 3rd day (the limit) yesterday, but Adam ran into him at the internet cafe. He said he was going to go sell his car to a car lot. We hung out with the Israeli girl again and a German couple. Nobody is coming in. The couple who looked at the Israeli girl's van yesterday is back, and after many hours of coming and going they decide to buy it (in the afternoon). Sometime in the morning one of the people working at the car market comes over to me and says that a car lot wanted to buy our van and would pay $1100 for it, but they needed to know that minute. Adam had left a couple minutes ... read more

Today was our first day at the backpacker's car market. It's a depressing little garage on a little street near a main one. We hung out all day with an Israeli girl and a British guy also trying to sell their vans/cars. It was a long day where no one came in except an Israeli couple the girl had found on the street and convinced to stop by. Also the British guy had someone stop by who had read an online ad. I felt depressed and anxious. That night Adam showed the van to a couple who seemed interested and said they'd get back to us the next day. ... read more

Got up this morning and drove into Auckland. We went to Domain Park to show the van to some girls, who said they'd get back to us in the afternoon. The other couple who were interested in seeing it bailed out. We checked into our mini apartment hotel place (which has a small kitchen/fridge and free internet) and in the afternoon got word that the girls didn't want the van; they had bought an automatic instead. I was starting to panic a little bit about getting rid of the van, so we went over to the Backpacker's Car Market to see what their deal was. They were really unhelpful, rude and bordered on being mean. We wanted to think about if we wanted to sign up and they bullied us into thinking we had to in ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Auckland » Waiwera December 21st 2009

This morning we got up and we had a flat tire in the back...on the driver's side this time! Luckily this time it could be patched. It was a quick fix. We continued our drive this morning going through the Kauri forest, where we saw Tane Mahuta, New Zealand's biggest Kauri tree which is about 2500 years old. It was huge. There were other trees, but none as big and impressive. Tonight we are staying in Waiwera, right next to the ocean. We wanted to spend our last night right by the ocean. We are attempting to clean up our van (we vacuumed at a gas station) and are doing laundry of the bedding and towels. Also try to wipe things down and just generally make it look nicer. While moving laundry around in the laundry ... read more
