Today we wanted to go to some ruins, but they were closed so we ended up going to Barranco, which is a district just a little bit south (3-4 km) of Miraflores where we are. Adam's dad was feeling better and decided to join us. The five of us squeezed into a taxi. When we got there we walked around for a bit, and then went to the Museum of Electricity. It was small, but had some cool stuff in there. Lots of old technology -- old record players, phones, jukeboxes, ovens, etc. Also a jacob's ladder (which isn't as good as Adam's), a small Van der Graaf generator, and a theramin!
Afterward we walked toward the beach, but reached a dead end, so we headed back and got some lunch at a small place that has outdoor seating, but also a small bar and seating in an old train car. It was really cool. Lunch was better than yesterday's, but not as exciting. Some pizzas and appetizers. We got causa rellena as an appetizer, which is seasoned mashed potatoes, with mayo, tomatoes, egg, and avocado inside. It was pretty good. Lunch was relaxing and the weather was really nice.
After lunch Adam's dad was feeling tired, so he took a taxi back to the hostal, and we continued our exploration. We walked down this little street that took us down to the beach. The beach was made up of rocks instead of sand, and the waves made a really cool sound when they hit the shore and and receded back. We decided to walk back to our hostal along the coast. There were a lot of small food and jewelry vendors along the way. It got really really hot and we were all pretty sweaty. There were a lot of paragliders out, which was fun to watch. Where the town is located is up on a cliff, so we had to keep looking for how to get all the way up there! We finally found the stairs, and climbed up and while that was hard for some of us (me) there was a fantastic breeze at the top as a reward. We got back to the hostal around 5pm.
We took a small walk in the evening, and then people had returned by the time we got back. Adam's dad went to dinner with some of the
students, and our usual group of six went to dinner with two students. We had picked a restaurant that was outdoors by the Huaca Pucllana ruins (also the name of the restaurant). When we got there it turned out to be really a nice/fancy place and even though we weren't dressed up we decided to eat there anyway. The food was really good, and the ambiance was great. Adam's sister and I split the Aji de gallina, and Adam and Steve split a nut crusted pork chop with chocolate suace and vegetables. We also got some appetizers - Shrimp and crab stuffed crab claw, and a scallop ceviche. It was a really fun night. The ruins were nifty to see lit up by lights at night, but you couldn't really tell how big it all was. After dinner we walked back to the hostal and the weather was really nice out for evening.
