It's been a very long day. The night train started off well until a fourth person joined us in the middle of the night, and continually woke me up by turning on lights and then with hideous snoring. The real kicker is that all the rest of the rooms in our cart were empty -- but all the doors locked. Adam stood around with me in the early A.M. and then we went back in to go to sleep -- he gave me his i-pod to listen too 3 It took awhile, but I fell back to sleep for a couple of hours. Our train arrived late to Munich, so we missed our train to Verona, but we caught one 2 hours later. We had a little compartment, and I slept for the first few hours, ... read more

Europe » Belgium April 18th 2005

Today we had to leave Brugge. We had a nice breakfust and set out towards the train station. On the way we walked to "the lake of love." It was really pretty there - lots of swans. We got to the train station with a bit of time left so Adam went out to pick up some more chocolates before we left. He made it back JUST in time and we go ton the train to Amsterdam (which stopped off in Antwerpen). In Amsterdam we waited in a timely line and made reservations for a night train to Munich. Afterwards we took a costly cab across town to the Van Gogh Museum. It was pretty cool to see his original paintings. Being able to see the texture of his strokes and ammount of paint used really ... read more

So today was a lot of fun. I really really like Brugge. After breakfust we walked to the Chocolate Museum and took the tour. We got a small piece of chocolate at the beginning and it smelled so good in there :) At the end of the tour there was a chocolate-making demonstration and afterwards we got a truffle from the demonstration. VERY yummy. We walked to the lace shops and bought our mom's lace hankerchiefs. WE also bought a waffle with chocolate sauce from a vendor. It was good -- more like a cake than a waffle. We took a canal ride - which I thought was a lot of fun! :) And we bought ourselves two truffles from a chocolate shop - a grand marnier and a caramel. mmmm!! It's so expensive though, but ... read more

So yesterday was a full day. We got up, had some breakfust and checked out of our hotel. We walked to see the Mannekin Pis - which was right next to our hotel. There was a large crowd of people, but we got a picture and left (we also took a hilarious picture of Adam standing in a Mannekin Pis cut-out). We walked to the train station and hopped on a train to Brugge. It was a quick ride and we got off and walked into town. It's so nice here. I like it SO much. All the streets are cobblestone and the buildings are old. We went to a B&B suggested in my travel book, but it was full. They pointed us to another one, but it was full too. They pointed us to one ... read more

Europe » Belgium » Brussels-Capital Region » Brussels April 15th 2005

The rest of the day went alright. Not long after writing before we lost our seats on the train because we didn't have "reserved" seating. So we stood teh rest of the time and listened to our i-pods. We got off in Paris and took the subway to another station so that we could go to Brussels. This time we had to reserve a seat. We split a tuna sandwhich made on a baguette - it was very tasty. The trip to Brussels was quick and then we walked until we found a hotel. It has TV, free breakfust and a SHOWER! We dropped our bags off and walked around. We had dinner at the Brussells Grill and it was good to finally sit and enjoy a meal. Afterwards we found a place to use the ... read more

Right now i'm on a train from Cherborg to Paris. I didn't write last night because the boat-ride was making me ill. But i'll write about yesterday now. We got up and walked to the train station to find out there were no trains to the harbor. So we took a bus there instead. We got there and bought tickets for the boat and then had a few hours to pass before we could board. We mostly hung out at the cafe in the station playing cards and reading. I'm glad we bought cards ^_^ Finally we boarded the boat. There were hundreds of what seemed to be French students on as well, so it was noisy and crowded. We dropped off our bags in our tiny room (at the very bottom of the boat - ... read more

We got up early this morning - before our alarm at 7am, to walk to the bus stop. It had been raining all night and was still raining when we woke up. But i slept pretty good - except everytime i woke up i was sweaty because it was so warm in our little room. This morning i also discovered a blister on my right foot. The bus came at 8am and we left for the Cliffs of Moher. It was really beautiful, but very windy and cold. We walked up a path and looked around for a bit. Unfortunately we were stuck sitting in a small cafe (in the small visitor's center) until 1pm when our bus to Limerick would arrive. We played a lot of cards and drank hot tea. Once we got to ... read more

Today was alright. It started off good. We got up, had breakfast, got all packed and walked to the train station in Dublin. It was a little bit far, but the packs worked well. We walked along the river, which wasn't that impressive, but I liked how each bridge was different. We got to the station at the perfect time, and got our Eurail pass verified. The train ride was nice. Read some, ate lunch and saw a lot of pretty landscape. It was much more like how I thought Ireland would look. We arrived in Galway at 2:15pm only to find out that the bus for Doolin didn't leave until 6pm!! I was definitely not happy. We sat in a cafe for most of the time, walked around the town (I was freezing and very ... read more

Today was another full day. We were up early so we had breakfust and then came back to our room and went to sleep. Got moving around 10am and were headed towards Powerscourt. We walked to the bus stop we needed and on the way there passed through St. Stephen's Green. It was a really nice park. Lots of green grass and colorful flowers. The bus ride to Powerscourt was fun - we sat on the top. It was nice to leave the city and see some of the landscape. When we got there we had to walk up this incredibly steep hill. I think my legs will hurt tomorrow. At the top we found the entrance and had to walk a long bit until we hit the gardens. It was tiring, but really scenic and ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin April 10th 2005

Today has been a long, but exciting day. We landed in Dublin a little before 8am. We got off and i got my first stamp in my passport. We made reservations at the Camden Deluxe Hotel and took a bus into the town. We sat on the top deck of the double decker bus -- that was so cool! We dropped our backpacks off at the hotel and went walking. We saw St. Patrick's Cathedral and walked through the park. The old buildings are cool to look at. We walked around looking for food, but since it was Sunday, not much was open. We walked to the Guiness Brewery. That place was huge -- it was seven floors. It was a self-guided tour, so we walked around and got educated on beer :) THey had a ... read more
