Our last day here. It was very warm again today. We came this morning into a nicer part of town - much busier, and more filled with tourists. We are staying at a nice 3-star hotel. It's a big step up from where we stayed the last two nights. We went to the Palacio Real and took a tour - it's a crazy place. Very lavishly decorated, but fun to see. Got hungry earlier than usual, so we found the Hard Rock Cafe here, and got some drinks, food, and a very tasty dessert. We saw the cool skyline bar they had too -- it was the New York skyline hanging from the ceiling. On the way back to the hotel we went into a store to look around and I found a really cute skirt. ... read more

It gets so late so fast! After this it's definitely time for bed. I hope I can fall asleep okay -- I took a nice long nap this afternoon. Madrid is VERY warm. I'm not that much of a hot weather person, though it is a nice change from the rain ;) Today we went to the Parque del Retiro. It's a HUGE public park, but very pretty. It has lots of benches and shade, which was nice. We walked around for awhile and saw this statue that won first prize in an international exhibition in 1878. It's said to be the first statue dedicated to the devil. We also found the Palacio de Cristal, which was very cool. It usually has art exhibitions, but one had just ended so it was empty. We found a ... read more

I started not feeling well today. I hope i'm not getting sick. But at least if I do, we are at the end of our trip. But I still hope I don't -- nothing worse than a long flight when you're sick. Anyway... This morning we got up, checked out and went for a "traditional" breakfust of Spain: Chocolate con Churros. It was really good. We got some Churros (no sugar on them or anything) and a small cup of thick hot chocolate-like liquid. We dipped our churros in and it was delicious! We need breakfust like that at home :D We then went to Passeig de Gracia, which is a street that has some Modernist buildings. We saw two by Gaudi -- La Pedrera and Casa Battlo. They were both cool, but I liked Casa ... read more

The weather was very warm today and the sky was very blue. We got up early and went to the train station and just barely made it onto the train to Figueres. We got there and walked around lost for awhile looking for the Dali Museum. We finally found it and it was a lot of fun. I am so happy I got to go -- I've been looking forward to it for months. There was a lot of his ink doodles/sketches that were impressive and his paintings looked fabulous in person. So rich and much better than prints :) It was cool that Dali designed this place while he was still alive (he's burried there now). I had a good time. We got back to Barcelona and to our hostal late, and took nice showers. ... read more

Today was really nice. The weather was gorgeous (and warm) and I just had a good time. We checked out of our lame hotel and took the Metro into the main area - Placa Catalunya/La Rambla. La Rambla is a BIG street, so we figured we could find something. We are staying off the main street in the Hostal Rembrant. It only costs 35 euro a night, and it's better than the last place -- we even have a small balcony! After dumping our stuff off we went and had lunch at Les Quinze Nites - a nice restaurant where we split Paella. It was really good. The Sangria we had was alright, but it hit me very quickly ;) Then we took the Metro up a bit and walked to Parc Guell. It was pretty ... read more

So we're finally here!! Our train got in at around 9:50 p.m. and we walked to the first hotel we saw (a one-star ghetto place that costs too much). I'm looking forward to laying down and letting my feet unswell. Tomorrow we're going to go into the main part of Barcelona and look for a better place to stay, as well as look around. The temperature is much warmer here - it's a nice change. ... read more

Sorry I didn't write last night. It was a long day (and night). We got up early to go to the Uffizi, and ended up waiting about 3 and a half hours in line to get in. I was tired and my feet hurt a lot. We saw THE BIRTH OF VENUS (aka Venus on the Half Shell) and THE ALLEGORY OF SPRING, as well as a couple of Da Vinci paintings. But mostly the Uffizi is the greatest museum for boring religious renaissance art. It wasn't worth the wait. But we had cannolies for breakfust, some pizza for lunch, checked our e-mail, finally sent our postcards and killed time. We sat in a small park and played cards until dinner. We waited at the train station forever and our train finally came. Itwas only an ... read more

I had a lot of fun today. We got up kinda early and took the train to Rome for the day. Unfortunately the Sistine Chapel was closed (until Monday!! grrr when they swear in the new Pope). But we walked to the Spanish Steps (which we aren't sure how they became so famous) and to the Trevi fountain. It was big and really cool. We threw coins in and then I read that you are supposed to throw them in while facing away over your shoulder. So we did it again :) Lunch was good too. We just picked a place randomly. I go some pizza and Adam got Pear & Balsalmic vinegar Risotto. I really liked his dish - the pears were yummy! We also went to the Pantheon which was neat. There is a ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence April 21st 2005

Today was a lot of fun, but my feet hurt so bad!! We got up this morning (no alarm) and headed toward the Uffizi - but the line was incredibly long. We walked around and at the Palazzo Vecchio and Loggia della Signora we saw the replica of the David, and there was a big square with lots of people. We walked to (and over) the Ponte Vecchio to the Palazzo Pitti. We went and walked through the massive garden (Gardino di Boboli). It was pretty and had a lot of fountains and statues to look at. The sun was also out today, which was very nice :) I hope it stays for the rest of our trip! The garden was mostly uphill, so we did a lot of walking. Afterwards we passed by the Uffizi ... read more

Today we got up ready to go on a gondola, but it was pouring rain (and hailing!!!). We walked around for a few hours -- and by chance passed this place that had Leonardo Da Vinci's inventions (they had made models off his notes/drawings). We had heard about this before we left so we decided to check it out. He was a very smart guy. We took a train to Florence and along the way there was pretty blue sky -- so we were hopeful (for no more rain) but it was overcast when we got here, and eventually it started to rain. Adam remembers his way around pretty good :) We tried to stay at the hotel he lived in, but they wanted too much money. So we went around the corner to a 3-star ... read more
