Church of San Francisco
(with catacombs) in Lima. It's been a very long day. The flight to Miami was good, and so was the one to Lima, except that we got delayed an hour before take-off because no one had loaded the luggage onto the plane! oops. They loaded it pretty quickly and then we were off. We arrived around 11:30p and went through immigration/customs and started meeting up with the rest of the group. We ended up waiting about 2 hours outside by the bus for the rest of the group -- they were getting questioned about all the optometry equipment they were bringing in. The weather was warm and humid, especially for the time of night it is. We got to our hostal in Miraflores at about 3am. In the morning we are going on a city tour, but that's about all we know. It feels a little bit weird to be on a trip that we didn't plan, and have no control over, but it's exciting to be here none-the-less.
I fell asleep about 4am last night, and woke up at 7:50am with low blood sugar. We got up and went downstairs for breakfast. Breakfast was some sort of fruit juice (mango or papaya) and
Adam's Twin
I found a bust of Adam. bread and jam. The bread was light and puffed up rolls. It was good. Everyone met at 10am to get ready for the day.
We took a bus to the Franciscan Monastery and Museum. There was a nice courtyard and outdoor tiling and artwork, but the best part was the catacombs. They were creepy and cool at the same time. The tour guide went really fast, and we got left behind, but that was okay because we got to explore a little more. There were a lot of small rooms and walkways. It was fun to poke around and take it all in. There was this huge pit filled artistically with human bones/skulls that was really deep. We caught up to our group afterward.
After that we walked to a museum on the inquisition. It wasn't anything too great -- just replicas of how they tortured people. Most of the signs/explanations were written in Spanish so we could only piece together some of what it said. We got lunch after that at a Peruvian Chain restaurant. We tried to go and venture our on our own for food, but they told us it was too dangerous (I was
Money
We find Adam on a 50 nueva sol not pleased with my lack of freedom). It was good though -- I think we were surprised. Adam and I got Pollo Saltado, which is like a chicken stirfry with onions, tomatoes, and french fries served with rice and a sauce. It was tasty. They also passed around a plate of beef hearts, which I took a bite of, and then had trouble getting down. I still felt kind of proud for trying it, even though it freaked me out.
With such a big group (22) it took forever to finish lunch. After lunch we walked around a bit, and then went to El Museo de la Nacion (National Museum) in Lima. We got a guide who gave us a tour through the history of Peru and explained the artifacts that we were seeing. It was interesting but by that point I was exhausted!
We then went to a big park with lots of water fountains (Compejo de Fuentes mas Grande del Mundo). It was really cool. They had some of the fountains you can run through, and one that made a huge tunnel to walk through, and you only got the tiniest bit wet. Then when it
got dark there was a big fountain/light show with music and lasers. It was incredible how crowded it was. It was great, plus it was nice to be outside.
We got back to the hostal around 8pm, and the majority of the group ditched us and went to dinner. 8 of us went out for a walk by the beach and by Larco Mar (this big outdoor boardwalk/mall place by the beach) looking for our group to no avail and then found a cute little restaurant to have dinner in. It was delicious and a nice quiet way to end the day.
