Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Ayers Rock March 9th 2017

Wednesday March 8, 2017 Getting up to go and see the sun rise, is quite a sacrifice, but, as it turned out was really worthwhile, and this taking into consideation that we did not get a full sunrise. Clouds covered a real complete sunrise, so what we saw was the reflection of the sun on the clouds with sparce rays really shining through. Gives a real nice effect nevertheless and lights up the Kata Tjuta (KT) rock formation in a continuous different colour. The KT formation is one of the two major attractions here. Whereas Uluru is a monolithic (one rock), KT is a series of rocks. Where from a distance it looks like a single stone formation, coming up close you see that it is consists of many stones and sand glued together under enormous ... read more

Tuesday, March 7, 2017 A travel day, i.e. Getting up early to go to the airport. Today we left Sydney to fly to Ayers Rock, or in the local aborigines language Uluru. Uluru is the name of an enormous rock formation, red in color and alone standing, quite spectacular, As the Turtle rock in Venezuela, Uluru is sacred to the aborigenes Uluru is in the middle of Australia with no settlement anywhere near. Truely the middle of nowhere. A couple of things drew our attention on the airport in Sydney, a boy with a baseball jacket/shirt of Magallanes, with advertisement of PDVSA and Maltin Polar included. We asked the owner if he had been to Venezuela, but the answer was, no, he had bought the jacket because he liked the model. Kind of surprising nevertheless. The ... read more

Monday March 6, 2017 A different but beautiful day. After a couple of dreary days, today turned out to be a blockbuster day. Beautiful wheathe with lots of activity. It started this morning with a walking excursion to the most original part of town called "the rocks". This was the first place where prisoners settled in 1788. A place that has been preserved in its original setting not due to government intervention, but a a result of actions of the local people and workers unions to maintain the place as a historic site. Very well done! Lots of explanations and stories on how Sydney, and by the same token all but one of the other major cities inAustralia were founded Difficult to understand that most of the Australian initial inhabitants, apart from the aborigines, were convicts. ... read more

Sunday March 5, 2017 A day without a fixed program. As it states in our itinerary "day at leisure". We started out with the "usual" great buffet breakfast, followed by mass at a small but beautiful church, St Patrick. Interesting to see that mass is read every hour, whereas in many countries this would be impossible due to the lack of priests. After mass we did the full tour of the Opera House and the botanic garden. This garden already exists for over 200 years and as such must have been established some 35 years after the first prisoners were shipped to Australia. All major cities in Australia with the exception of Adelaide, find their origin in the deportation of English prisoners to Australia starting in 1780 appoximately. Later in the day we met a friend ... read more

Saturday March 4 2017 Our first full day in Sydney. Let me give it to you as it is: jetlag is a bitch. We were awake around 3.00 AM, but fortunately we were able to drift off a bit, but around 7.00 AM, that was it. Great breakfast here at the hotel. After breakfast we spent some time in the business lounge where we met a friendly Australian couple that gave us some tips on things to do, amongst them, go and see the Mardi Gras Gay Parade. A major happening here. As it turns out Sydney, after San Francisco has the largest gay community of any city in the world. As you would find for these type of parades, people in favor others against. A major political figure of a Christian Democrat party here is ... read more

Friday March 3, 2017 When you travel from San Francisco to Sydney, tomorrow is 2 days later. Although I have done these trips more than once, but the time differences remain confusing. We are now 16 hours ahead of Miami and 10 ahead of The Netherlands. I make these numbers explicit here to avoid anybody calling us at ungodly hours, not taking into consideration these time difference. And another thing, don't call to our regular telephone number, but if you call us use facetime or whatsapp. Calling to our regular numbers will not make your call more expensive to you, but ourcost will skyrocket due to roaming charges. Writing this note we are installed in a very nice boutique hotel in the centre of Sydney. Climate is nice as far as temperature is concerned (23 C ... read more

Wednesday March 1, 2017 As I said yesterday "wine related it will be". I had never imagined how much wine it would be. Not that we drank a lot, but being in Napa Valley, everything seems to gear around wine. Wineries and wine tasting opportunities all over the place. Really impressive!! It had one major drawback nevertheless, finding a good cup of coffee is difficult. The only wine tasting we participated in was in a real medieval castle "castello di amaroso" in the town of Calistoga. Very interesting and very well done. It was built by the owners of The Castello winery in 1993, using raw materials brought from Europe. The rest of the day we toured around and finally ended up n Sonoma, apparently the hart of the Napa Valley. In line what we did ... read more

Tuesday February 28, 2017 We started again where we had left off, sort off that is. Our world tour was interrupted last year in New Zealand and we traveled back to the US, where we ended up spending time in the area of Los Angeles. Now we have started again, but did so in San Fransciso. A very early rise to get the "red eye" flight at 7.30 out of Miami to San Francisco, which meant that we had to get up at 4.45. "What do you mean vacation?" We went of to a bad start, leaving home and entering the highway, a simple question brought a brief spel of panic: "Did you bring the passports?" You guesed the answer: they were in my backpack sitting on the couch at home. Luckily the question was popped ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Auckland October 19th 2016

October 19, 2016 Auckland is an interesting city. Depending who you talk to, it has about 1,5 million inhabitants, which is about a third of the whole population. Kind of amazing. I don't know any other country with similar characteristics. The economy of the country is concentrated around agriculture (dairy, fruits, fish and lately, wine). Today we dedicated our day to wine, not just drinking, but visiting 2 wineries. Wine in New Zealand is principally (over 80%) white wine, chardonnay and souvignon blanc. Wineries are still small and production is still limited, which turns New Zealand wine in realitively expensive. In restaurants you can buy local wine or imported and invariably, local wines are more expensive than the imported ones. Quality of the wine is good, although the wines from one of the wineries we visited ... read more

18 October 2016 As things go, sometimes fortune strikes when you least expect it. Looking at alternatives for hotels, it ocurred to me to go to American Express that has been sending me e-mails regarding their travel business. At their web site I was offered the best hotels in town, with the possibility to pay for the hotels with points accumulated over time for the use of the credit card. Long story short, we are now in a premium hotel with all ammenities for free, including access to a club where we can eat for free, and even (tomorrow afternoon) have english "high tea"! A great deal!! A great way to close our visit to New Zealand. Today we took a tour by ferry to an island before the coast, Waiheke Island. A beautiful place, very ... read more
