Zambujaira do Mar to Odemira 113.24 km Sorry followers, the internet here is very poor. I don't know if I can publish this note today. Anyway, it was not eventful, but in general, a good day although a long one: 9.30 hours on the road biking some 115km. Not much rain so that was good. We had some difficulties finding a hotel and ended up somewhat distant from our main route. We had a good dinner with very friendly hosts. Life here is relatively inexpensive and people are very friendly toward tourists. A memorable moment to mention is the fact that due to a cart reading incident, we biked some 6 km on the apron of a highway. A situation that, if I had been driving a car would have qualified as “these bikers must be ... read more

Lagos to Zambujaira do Mar 76.13 km A somewhat difficult start to the day. It started with me finding out that I left my Garmin GPS in the apartment, followed up by Jaap, who left his bike during the night in the corridor of the building outside the apartment finding out that he “had a flat tire". Both events delayed our start. As it worked out, Jaap’s tire had not a problem. A joker had left the air out of the tire. A nice man in a nearby bike shop nearby was able to detect the problem quickly. Picking up the key to the apartment I was able to recuperate my Garmin. The day was plagued with strong rain and winds; fortunately, most of the winds were sideways or in the back. An unpleasant experience biking ... read more

Loulé/Faro to Lagos 100.46 km A first day on the bike. In general a good day, but with some hiccups. We started slightly after 8.00 and arrived 9 hours and 100 km later in Lagos. We stopped twice, for coffee and lunch and battery charging for at least 1.5 hours. No real rush. The road was diverse: regular roads and rocky/sandy roads and paths. On more than one occasion, we had to get off our bikes and walk some distance which is not pleasant with heavy bikes. It seems that the route we planned was more for mountain bikers than for regular bikers such as us. I slipped and fell on 2 occasions, but nothing serious. We need to review our road planning; these rocky roads are slow and for me, dangerous. Overall we followed the ... read more

MISSING September 10th 2022

Little to tell today. Last night I took a sleeping pill and slept well. One of our travel companions (Mark) missed his flight connection in Lisbon yesterday evening and only arrived at 2.00 pm today. Gave me time to get better adjusted and prepared. We are now leaving tomorrow morning at 8.00am. We have had a long discussion about the route to take. At least we came to an agreement for tomorrow; later we see and discuss it again. "We" is a bit of an overstatement it reallyI means Mark and Jaap, I have little to add. I just follow my 2 fellow travelers, they are the ones with the experience.Tomorrow is a big day. Makes me a bit nerv... read more

First entry. I just arrived in Faro. Had a long flight from Miami. First to London with a stopover of 4 hours and then a shorter flight direct to Faro, all the way to the south of Portugal. I write this note from the house of Mark Schneiders, one of the three “braves” that will make the bike ride of some 1,000 km. The other participant is Jaap de Jonge. We know each other for a great number of years. We initially met in Venezuela, but have stayed in touch. Jaap en Mark will be arriving later in the day/evening. No fixed plans have been made for our start, but I anticipate that this will be tomorrow at some point. This is it for today's note. I will report again tomorrow. The attached photo is our ... read more

Thursday and Friday March 23 and 24, 2017 It's over, time to return to our part of the world again. Our flight leaves at 14.30 PM Sydney time and we will be arriving in San Francisco the same day (23rd) on 9.30 AM. Although there obviously is a logical explanation for the time difference, nevertheless it is always somewhat amazing to me that when going in the direction of Australia and countries alike, you lose a day and coming back, you gain the day back. The corresponding jetlag to these time differences is less amazing, and, particularly when flying back, less amusing. The flight is pleasant, but as expected long, over 14 hours. Qantas is a great airline with very good service. What is different with Qantas is that they are totally adapted to the long ... read more

Wednesday March 22, 2017 A travel day from Melbourne to Sydney and a memorable day for a probably never returning coincidence: Philip Ignacio, our grandson, as indicated yesterday, has his birthday on the 21st and I mine on the 22nd. Due to time differences we celebrated our birthdays on the same day. Difficult to explain to our granddaughters, who already have difficulties understanding that they are having breakfast wihile we here down under, are having dinner or about to go to bed. our flight was supposed to leave on 15.30, but only did on 17.45; a long time at the airport. Since we had to check out of the hotel at 11.00, we took the opportunity to revisit the shopping area of Melbourne, taking the tram again and walking back to the hotel. Arriving at Sydney, ... read more

Tuesday, March 21, 2017 Birthday of our youngest grandchild, Philip Ignacio. Happy birthday and may your future hold many interesting voyages. Today was a typical "tourist day"; we bought a "hop on hop off ticket" giving us the flexibility to get on and off the bus at those places we wanted to visit. In theory that should work well, but in practice we only used one leg of the 13 stops the bus makes. Difficult to match the timing of your visits with the itinerary of the bus. Additionally the weather did not cooperate today. The rain showers and thunderstorms announced for yesterday, made their appearance today. We made the most of our day, visiting the anglican St Paul Cathedral. Anglican churches can easily be confused with roman catholic ones. In broad lines they have the ... read more

Monday March 20, 2017 Today for different reasons was a remarkable day. We had booked a tour for the Great Ocean Road and the Twelve Apostles. In order to get up at 6.00AM for a tour of over 12 hours, the experience must be something out of the ordinary, and so it was. I have written before that tours here, take you far away from the big cities and take you on long drives or boat trips, but all of them have been really worthwhile. The road we were traveling finds it's origin in some sort of "occupational therapy" for soldiers coming back from the first world war for whom there was no real job upon their return. The highway of 244 km is dedicated to the soldiers fallen in WW1, the longest war memorial. The ... read more

Sunday, March 19, 2017 A travel day. Our flight to Melbourne was on 15.00, which gave us ample time to check out of the hotel and go to mass. We had visited the cathedral of Canberra the day before, which made it easier to find. We attended mass and had the opportunity to greet the bishop that performed the mass. We introduced ourselves and complemented him on the mass and the cathedral, upon which we received his blessing. Not something that happens every day. Turning the car in at the airport turned out to be a bit more complicated than we expected. The directions given by the gps were not all that clear, which led to use both Margarita's and my phone for directions. Once we had turned in the car, and had made our way ... read more
