A bad start Getting to the airport, check in, great. Security a nightmare. It took me more tan 45 to pass. Should have been a sign for things to come. Boarding and push off was smooth, although somewhat delayed, as you could expect. It went wrong once we hit the apron and we were told that we were number 12 for take off.and even wronger when the pilot announced that for one reason or the other we had to wait for approval from the tower for a flightplan change and we were sidelined. In the meantime rain and thunderstorms had appeared and everything went on hold. A long story short, I missed my conexión in Atlanta and had to find, for expense of the airline, a hotel. Obviously I was not only one looking for a ... read more

I owed you a somewhat longer description of our last day to Santiago de Compostela. A day, literally, with a number of highs and lows, but ending with the biggest high: biking into Cathedral square. What satisfaction and happiness. In moments Like this, I have to contain myself to not start openly crying. Not just a tier, but really crying. The three of us embraced which felt great. Lots of pilgrims on the square, most utterly tired but happy-faced. The effort paid off; we made it! Back to our day: this was probably the heaviest day of our journey, with steep climbs from the moment we left the hotel. Since the clock had advanced 1 hour the day before, at our regular hour of starting our rides, 8.00, it was still semi-dark with a temperature of ... read more

Vilaboa to Santiago de Compostela 86 km ARRIVED!! For the time being a brief note. After a challenging day on the road, at 6.30 PM, we arrived in Santiago de Compostela. I feel blessed to be in the position and state of health to complete this bike ride. As it turns out, entering the cathedral square, we exactly clocked the distance from Faro to Santiago at 1,000 km or 625 miles. I will write more about today and our stay here in Santiago tomorrow. Now I feel too tired. Before clocking off, one thing I need to get off my chest: I COULD HAVE NEVER COMPLETED THIS TRIP IF IT WEREN’T FOR MARK AND JAAP. MANY THANKS, I OWE YOU GUYS A LOT.... read more

Ponte de Lima to Vilaboa 80.36 km A day dominated by batteries. It started with finding out that my battery had not charged entirely during the night. My USA battery charger cable requires an adapter to connect to the European electrical outlets. Apparently, the adapter had slid out of the outlet during the night and had stopped the battery from charging. A major issue, but not fatal. We had to stop more frequently to make sure I did not run out of battery. At a critical moment at the end of our today's ride on our way to the hotel, which resulted to be farther away than we anticipated, we were barred from charging in a restaurant. Something unusual that had not happened to us before. We were all running out of charge and had to ... read more

Porto to Ponte de Lima 86.21 km A day with a late start Bicycles and people require some revision and maintenance every once in a while. Today was such a day and our intentions to start later were torpedoed. We have seen very fancy bike shops in the cities, but they tend to be little practical and expensive for the minor things we need them for. (Check brakes, tire pressure, some not identified noise, etc. ) The ones were the shopkeeper is the owner and the man is over 60 old, that’s our place. They understand our direct needs and are willing to take the time to have a look. We found one today: diagnoses on the spot and minor adjustments; no real problems. We have been passing some rough roads. I have said this before, ... read more

Águeda to Porto 86.96 km A day to be careful with the battery… We have made it a habit to have breakfast at 7.30 and to get on the road by 8.00. Why 7.30? Because that is the time kitchens seem to open here. Fortunately for me, kitchens do not open earlier!! The day proved to be a heavy one with a lot of climbing. In total, we climbed almost 1.300 m. As I explained in previous notes, climbing generally requires more battery usage. Today that certainly was true. One of our batteries (Jaap's) run out out of power. Miraculously, this happened 150 meters from the corner of a restaurant where we could eat and recharge. I almost run out of battery getting to Porto. Just one of 5 bars of charge left. Does not feel ... read more

Ansião to Águea 92.00 km Another day I have noticed that I may have made some grammatical errors in earlier messages. Given the fact that I write these notes at the end of my day and that is the last thing I do before going to sleep after a long day of biking, I beg you to forgive any error. ( Now back in Florida I have tried to correct most of the errors, nevertheless still may still persist.) Today again was a day of biking and tourism. We biked to Coimbra, some 50km, and took the time to visit the world-famous library and the Santa Ana Convent, where one of the former queens is buried. Coimbra, at some point in time, was the capital of Portugal. A spectacular and beautiful place, although difficult to reach ... read more

Chamusca to Ansião 81,81 km A different day. I had a great night's sleep that helped me pass tiredness and still some lingering jet lag. We had an easy drive going to Tomar a town created inside the walls of the Convento de Cristo, constructed, according to Wikipedia, under the orders of Gualdim de Pais, the fourth Grand Master of the Knights Templar of Portugal in the late 12th century. A very worthwhile visit. Contrary to many old buildings (convents, churches and grand houses. etc. ) we have seen along the way, this convent, a world heritage site, is being well maintained and restored. Stopping and visiting historic sites was not something I did when I walked the Camino. My main objective then was to get from A to B in the shortest possible time. I ... read more

Lisboa to Chumasca 108.50 km A pilgrimage or a bike ride? Today I had to focus on this question after seeing a lot of people walking with their backpacks along the way just as I did 10 years ago. We "flashed" them by on our fancy electric pedal-assisted bikes. Their effort seems much bigger than ours, although we started much further back and cover much more distance every day. I leave the answer to the question for the time being. I want to finish the trip and then, possibly come to a clearer vision on the subject. Our day covered a distance of some 108km, which, for me, was plenty. A good day as far as climate and road conditions are concerned, although biking these distances after a poor night's sleep results to be challenging. As ... read more

Odemira to Lisbon 86.37 km An interesting day with some cheating… The day started as regularly. Breakfast was very decent and the sky was looking to rain. Although we started out riding dry, the rain came quite quickly. Fortunately, the rain did not last. Little weather problems for the rest of the day. Some decisions were made to shorten our ride. Instead of biking around the bay close to Setubal, we decided to take a ferry, shortening the ride significantly. Getting off the ferry, we met a german couple that recommended us not to drive through Lisbon, but to take the train. As it turned out an excellent recommendation. Driving on a bicycle with luggage through a busy town is not recommendable. Too dangerous. An interesting note on the train: crossing the river the train is ... read more
