1. I may have rambled about it to you before Jenna and i left but one of my life goals was to eat raw cashew fruit fresh off the tree. Well yesterday on a stroll to a beach just south of where we are staying we walked under a tree that we realized was a cashew tree and it had ripe fruit on it! It was a goal of mine because the fruit spoils a day or less after being picked and it can only be consumed directly off the tree. Because of this most cashew fruit is turned into alcohol called Feni. Feni ain't so great and neither is fresh cashew fruit but it a was a goal I set and I achieved it! 2. I mentioned the pigs that lived around our guesthouse in ... read more

Jenna and i have decided that India is a very silly place. Not in a bad way and for no single reason; just in general... a very very silly place. There ARE rules here and laws and social conventions that are all very strict in title. There are simply too many people here to ever fully enforce anything. It is sort of beautiful but is as also sort of annoying at times. One case is that homosexuality is strictly illegal here but on the flip side it is highly common for men to walk around holding hands and showing various forms of physical affection. These are practices that would set off the gay-dar of anyone in the west but here its common place and not considered "homo" at all. Another case is traffic. Penalties for law ... read more

I was originally going to fill this entry with jealously inducing stories of palm fringed white beaches and the hassles of hawkers, but we stumbled upon something significantly more interesting. While having lunch today we were warned of 'Colour' by a brit expat weirdo, he said 'Chapora takes no prisoners' and that they fill up water guns with this 'colour' and shoot down tourists. He said 'It's like they hate the colour of our skin or something'. We generally take advice from bitter wack jobs with a grain of salt - and it's a good thing we did!!! But we were still a little apprehensive as all day long we would hear 'colour' in the middle of Konkani conversations and the street were eerily quiet. We decided after leaving the beach this morning (complete with shin ... read more

Asia » India » Goa » Anjuna Beach March 12th 2010

India is a very funny place for us to get used to but the aspects that sticks out the most are the practices and ideals surrounding cleanliness. People devote a lot of time to keeping the environment clean here. Sweeping the streets and alleys, washing dust and grime off of everything and shoveling up cow pies. It is in some ways a very clean place and in others very very gross. I try to be non judgmental but when i see folks burning garbage in giant piles or shitting on floors they shower on, as well as wiping floors with cloths that are moved by their feet then in turn used for my dinner table, i cannot help but get a little irked. Indians destroy their bathrooms. Yes that is a generalization and its true! For ... read more

Asia » India » Maharashtra » Aurangabad March 9th 2010

We have to relearn to do everything again here, from crossing streets to taking the train. We have successfully taken the train twice now and have a pretty good grasp of how to do it. We travelled to Aurangabad by an overnight train to go see the ancient Buddhist/Hindu/Jain caves of Ajanta and Ellora. We took sleeper class, which is non a/c and the lowest class with beds. The eight hour train ride cost us about 2.50 each. All the people around us we very nice and peppered Brian with questions about Canada. There were a pair of antisocial European travellers in our berth as well, but we didn't know it until they came to go to sleep. Up until that they stoled other peoples bed so they could read and not have to experience local ... read more

Mumbai in one word, CRAZY. There are so many many things i could say that we have seen inthe past 3 days here. So many crazy experiences, each just 3 steps from the last. This is by far the largest and busiest city i have ever been to. The traffic is war like and always throbbing with volume. The honking never stops much like the cars and motor cycles. I have never said this about a city but i would never ride a bike here. Walking is a physical and mental test on its own and i am impressed that i haven't seen any fatalities yet. This place is teeming!!! People, animals, sounds just pour out from every crevace, corner and balcony. The architecture here is the most beautiful and articulate of anywhere i have seen ... read more

North America » United States » New York » New York » Manhattan February 27th 2010

We arrived in NYC FINALLY! 18 hours on a bus, the ride was supposed to take 12 hours but much of the delay was spent stuck in a snow bank on an offramp 2 minutes from the Syracuse bus station. Although uncomfortable i was not annoyed or claustraphobic as kept busy by observe the eccetricities of my fellow trapped bus riders slowly emerge over the boring hours. We were released from the cold kung-fu grip of the monsterous snowbank with the help several plows and local police digging us out by hand. The rest of the ride was problem free and arrived in NYC unscathed and 7 hours late. Our host and friend from hamilton who lives here worked until 5 so jenna and i went for a pleasent stroll around lower manhattan. Because of all ... read more

North America » Canada » Ontario » Hamilton February 22nd 2010

Only a couple of days before we ship off. The last weekend was a string of antics goodbyes and memories made. Thanks to everyone we know and love for being so damn awesome! All that is left to do now is get our boxed up belongings to storage and finish packing our backpacks. This is all more than a bit weird for me; not sure whether to be happy or anxious or scared. I feel all of these emotions at the same time but i just need to accept there is little i can actually do to prepare myself other than be open and ready for a mind fuck. The next post will be from some dingy net cafe in mumbai and hopefully not from some dingy net cafe in the JFK airport having had our ... read more
