Oh if winter comes!
Having only enjoyed Lake Louise in the summer, it's quite a surprise to see it covered in ice - and ice sculptures! While it looks great in the sun, I'm sure it was still very cold - and I have to say that I prefer the warmth. As my old Dad used to say: '...looks lovely in the summer but, oh, if winter comes!'

Winter Comes Every Year
The temperature was cold but our hearts were warm! Thanks

Lake Louise

Winter never looked so good
I'm not a fan of winter or snow, but you make it look good. Especially liked the shots of the snow-laden spruce, the peek-a-boo mountain, and Lake Louise as I've never seen it. Well done!

A winter wonderland
We've always wanted to go to Lake Louise. Great photos. The joys of a winter wonderland.

Beckett Guest House

Jolly Ole
Hello Judith: Thank you for your diary while in York. The shot of your room at Becket reminded me of my 'bed-sit' in London. Only mine was not painted lilac, and had a gas meter that seemed to eat pennies - the old ones! I sense too a feeling that you cannot go back 'home', with your encounter in finding the right house! Thanks for the memories!

A river cruise
The music, the architecture, the joys of rivers cruises. Looks like fun.

Church interiors
Thanks for this latest blog, Judith. I'm struck by the variety of styles of architecture the interior of St. Stephan's Cathedral and the Jubilee Church. Thanks for this, Peter

Cruising too . . .
We just got back from our first river cruise from Budapest to Linz and then by bus to Saltzburg and then Prague. Beautiful! Your posts are so detailed and interesting. Hope you are well.

What a lovely photograph
Amazing architecture

Baskets!
I swear, every culture makes baskets: Inuit, Navajo, Vietnamese, and now Cretans. I bet there's a whole line of study on their comparative anatomy. Great post!

Multiculturalism
Boy, we sure don't have a lock on multiculturalism - here are signs of Turks, Jews, Greeks and Italians (yes?). A fascinating melange.

Spoons, scarves and squid(s?)
Nice shots (again!) - and the link to Souda Bay info is great as well. How did I know that it would have an improbably colourful kingfisher featured near the end?

Flooding in Alberta
Hello Judith: I hope that you have not suffered as a result of the recent flooding. While the media coverage seems to have centered on getting folks back to their homes and getting downtown back operating, the damage done to bike paths in the city, and the flooding in Kananaskis, made your blog that more insightful. It will take years before some of the scaring to the landscape is remedied, if it ever will. So images like yours and our own, will be that more precious. Thank you. Peter

Direct from maker
How fine to be able to buy directly from the artist/potter/producer. I'm OK with the global supply chain and manufactured goods, but it's nice to make that personal contact from time to time. As for Arthur Evans - lovely description! Do you suppose "indefatigable" necessarily rests on "confident"?

Neoclassical Architecture

Thanks!
Thanks one more time for refreshing my memory with descriptions and pictures. I can taste that lemonade! Warm wishes, Jean C.

Hi Judith
I'm so appreciative of your doing this. I feel like sharing all this with all around me! Great pix. Be well, Jean C.

Dancing
Great video of the cross-generational dancers. It reminded me of nothing so much as (trying to!) dance the hora with my sister's Jewish in-laws and their community. As you say, commonalities....

100 grams of chocolate?
Did you really stop with just 100 grams? I'm impressed! And congratulations on your travel photography award - fabulous! How do they keep things so white?

Stone wall
Great shot of the stone wall - I am always amazed at folks who could build a stable structure like that. I can hardly pile up 3 or 4 rocks without them falling down when a squirrel meanders past. Maybe it illustrates the maxim that if you have time enough, you can do almost anything...

Bits of buildings
Interesting to have a theme - whether planned or serendipitous - in your sights seen. I don't suppose there would be many such buildings (built of other bits) in western Canada, at least - the Maritimes might be another matter. I wonder whether immigrants from such places feel liberated or a bit lost when they hit our history-light shores.

Intentional?
Did you juxtapose the stalactites and the octopi intentionally? I may never go in another cave!

Ferry ride
Judith, I can see why you felt queezy on this ferry ride!

Think of the great explorers
I'm with you - I can get lost/turned around in an unfamiliar downtown, however small. I wonder how those wacky explorers did it all those centuries ago, with no GPS and no helpful (albeit exasperated) chefs/waiters?
