Good memories
Judith, I love India and reading this and watching your videos brought back some great memories. Thank you.

Newfoundland Trip
I really enjoyed the blog of your Newfoundland and Labrador trip. The combination of the photos and commentary made me feel as if I had been on the tour with you. It's definitely a place that I would like to see one day.

Strait of Belle Isle
Beautiful picture of the Strait of Belle Isle looking back at St Barbe. The scene looks almost surreal.

Baffling the locals . . .
. . .by taking them at their word (er, sign). Great!

Boy, I'll say you had a busy day - and a well-researched one, too, it would appear, to take in two good tours. And maybe some sensible opportunism (in the good sense) in choosing where to eat dinner. Great shots, especially of the cathedral's interior. I wonder if Jane ever dreamt about what her place would be in literary history?

Jane Austen's place in history
I think it is sad that Jane Austen was not well-known in her own lifetime. It took almost a hundred years for the appreciation of her work to build. Interesting to speculate on why. I think her perceptiveness was out of step with her society.

Jet lag
I can't believe everything you got done on your first day there after an overnight flight. I usually have my teeth clenched for that day. And nothing says "Not in Kansas" anymore than a street named "Jewry" and a building in continuous use for 500 years. Yikes.

Better living through chemistry
Yes, modern drugs are marvellous. I wonder how seasick-prone travellers survived on those early (and slow) sailing ships, across a whole ocean. Great shots from your final day there - an odd feeling, is it not, to hit that age at which the "last" things start to appear?

Last time
Knowing that we are seeing places for the last time is odd. Except I have to acknowledge that I rarely visit the same place twice anyway.

Wonderful memories
We have unbelievable memories to last a lifetime of our 2 wk. bus tour of NFLD. ,in July 2014.Your well written blog describes the joy we experienced on our three boat tours ,puffins, whales and up close spectacular icebergs. A wonderful holiday from beginning to end and perfect weather was a bonus.

A full day
You made the most of your time in St. John's, that's for sure. I couldn't believe what you saw before lunch! And you took some great photos as well.

Jelly beans and murals
Great shot of the mural on the retaining wall, topped by the jelly bean houses. I didn't know it was boat paint - the cost of wandering by oneself! But I share the experience of getting lost in St. John's - built as a network of roads radiating out from the harbour, there's nary a square grid to be found. Quite a challenge for someone born and raised in the West . . .

Jelly Beans and murals
Getting lost in St John's is a traveller's joy! As long as it's not raining buckets!

Hi Judith
I liked reading about your travels. To be honest I think I'm feeling a little jealous. See you soon.

Tourism Economics
Our central-Canada born-and-bred neighbours winter in Ottawa and summer in their Newfoundland cottage. Maybe Michael's hope wil be realized. These towns are quite delightful: I hope they survive somehow, too. Great shots of Salvage harbour and crab traps, BTW, and nice perspective on the mussel lines.

Pictorial opportunities
Really glad you liked the mussel farm photo. I took while the bus headed out of town! I had never seen such a thing before.

Great Story and Pics
Hi Judith, I'm really enjoying your trip through Newfoundland and particularly liked the pics of the wreckage from the SS Ethie. The remnants are like industrial sculptures along the beach. And the house is salmon coloured! So appropriate.

Blue-green with envy
I envy you your sunlit traverse of Western Brook Pond. When we were there, the cloud layer was so low we couldn't see the tops of some of the cliffs, and the whole scene was grey. We also enjoyed the energy of the performers at Cow Head itself. And I laughed when I read about potatoes and turnips - the staple vegetables! Thanks for the memory refresher.

NL ads
NL has started running the beautiful ads again, so I am also experiencing the sites again, especially Western Brook Pond.

Thanks for the peek
I almost feel as if I was on that trip - maybe especially because I've considered it. I agree that it's nice to have the last day be a touring day - so often it's just the drudgery end of the travelling.

Glad you enjoyed the trip
Thanks for your comments. They quite often make me see something again with different eyes. The pleasure of travelling can be endless.

Rhythm and those pesky Polynesians
Per the Easter Island connection - My reading for our trip to NZ/Aus has given me a new perspective on the Polynesians (not hard, as I hardly had one before, beyond a vague sense of ridiculously beautiful people) as the most widely dispersed people on the planet. Apparently they traveled truly amazing distances across boundless oceans in little wee canoes while Europeans were still hugging coastlines. So there. And how nice to dance with someone who gets it - and gets that we don't, so much. Sounds like a delightful trip.

Watery Wanderings
In Newfoundland and Labrador this summer, I learned that Nordic peoples regularly travelled to "Canada" for fishing in the summer. For Polynesians, the weather was summery for longer periods of time, no doubt enabling them to travel even further.

"In my view"
A good discipline in general, in my view. It alerts others to our meaning and reminds us at the same time!
