The plan today was to just wander around Thimpu and get necessary permits to visit Punakha, Thangu-Cherry and Takstang. Thangu-Cherry are hill monasteries accessible by half an hour treks from the Dodeyna village about 20 kms from Thimpu. The special permit to Punakha can be easily obtained at the immigration bureau, Thimpu (submit in the morning and collect it in evening). However a trek to Thangu/Cherry and Takstang requires some trekking at Thimpu itself for the permits. One has to trek up to department of culture with the photocopies of your Bhutan travel permit. You have to fill up an application form in Dzongkha, the official Bhutanese language ! Request the officer to fill it up for you and mostly he will oblige. Then walk all the way back to the market to take a photocopy ... read more

The ceiling fan blowing air at full speed and the sun rays being blocked by the surrouding buildings, I slept till 8.30 am what seemed a luxury a couple of days ago at HMI. Welcome to the plains ! I hurriedly freshened up to keep the appointment at 9.00 am. In the last month, bath showed up just a couple of times on my morning schedule. No chance here. We crossed the border to Phuntsholing and headed to the immigration bureau for our permits. They accept only passport and voter id cards. Shyam had his driving license and we had a tough time getting through. The people at the Indian embassy were unhelpful to the point of being rude. Not that the Bhutanese guys are courteous, but the Assistant immigration officer might just help you out ... read more

After 28 days in mountains, it was time to head for plains, to Jaigaon, the border town in India where one can enter Bhutan, the land of the Thunder dragon. I boarded the only direct state transport bus to Jaigaon from Darjeeling at 7.30 am (ticket Rs.135/-). A less time consumping option would be to take a shared jeep to Siliguri and then another one to Jaigaon. The bus seats were quite comfortable and an advance booking got me a single seat right next to the driver. The driver was a jolly person having been perfected the art of multi-tasking. He knew almost every other person on the way and waved to each of them as his other hand negotiated the narrow hair pin bends. When not waving, he talked on his swanky Moto razr phone ... read more

This entry is about buying trekking shoes in Mumbai. After I had to dump my hiking shoes at SFO airport due to weight problems, I was looking out for good hiking shoes. After searching on google, I found three stores that may sell hiking shoes. I wasnt keen on buying Woodland shoes because (a) They are bulky and weighty (b) and a couple of guys on my last hike complained about the grip in monsoon. It was confirmed by few reviews on some websites. Whatever little I can find on net, most of them recommended Action trekking shoes. At Rs. 650/- they are cheap and according to reviews very durable. I found there are three shops thats specialize in Hiking Materials in Mumbai. 1. Avi Industries 13, Shirji Sadan, 352, Chandvarkar road, Matunga(E), Mumbai 022 24143810 ... read more

We got up at 6.30 am with no hint at all of the eventful day that lay ahead of us. After a dose of hot tea, we started off in the fog which had not relented since yesterday. It had rained pretty badly the last night and my apprehensions of climbing the Budhala Machi returned. However I comforted myself in the presence of Bhagoji Dere and started walking. A number of trails spurted out from the original trail creating confusion in a foggy day like this. The rule of thumb was to keep right at the forks, take the middle path at junctions and never descend. We passed the Dhardev mandir and stopped at the second house who offered us with some buttermilk. Bhagoji and his friend at the second house feasted themselves with generous handfuls ... read more

We started around 8 am to hike to aloo darwaja. It was cold and foggy with a visibility of 100 ft. Vivek took a quick dip in Padmavati lake. This guy loves torturing his body and does some wierd things to himself. He slept in a wet T-shirt, shivered all the night, took a dip in the cold lake, did some kind of yoga (dhauti or sth) and was ready to hike with us. After walking for about 30 min, on what we thought would be a machi, we took parting snaps and went different ways. We continued on the trail and completely missed the Alloo darwaza on our left. The trail came to the dead end on a buruz. We climbed on the buruz and spotted a trail on our right which we thought might ... read more

I expected a lot of trekking activity on an extended weekend like this (Gandhi Jayanti, 2nd Oct, on friday). The best place to find people for trekking is a couple of orkut communities and mumbaihikers.org (a nice site keeping a track of trekking activities around mumbai). My first choice, Vasota trek (a long timer on my wish list) didnt work as the group could not obtain the necessary permits (Yes you need permits for this trek !). So I got on to the second choice Torana Rajgad and called Yatin, the organizer. He had called off the plan but gave me Vivek's number who was going with 4 guys and leaving the same day. I wasnt very keen on a three day trek as I was a bit busy in planning my India trip. But the ... read more

Jumping out of a plane at 10,000 ft, a free fall of 15 seconds and then gliding down with a parachute watching the panoramic views ! Ever since I got to know about Tandem jump(A jump for the first timer harnessed to an experienced guy who does all that needs to be done to stay alive), it was sitting at the top of my "To do before die list" There are a few sky-diving schools near Indiana (where I lived in US), but paying 300 bucks for jumping to panoramic views of endless acres of corn-fields is not exactly charming. The nearest option was Chicago. But then suddenly a friend in New York (a newly converted outdoor enthusiast) showed interest. I was heading to New York anyways. So we planned a trip with sky-diving over Poconos ... read more
