I had problems last night getting connected, so I waited until we reached Zubiri. Still having problems. We left the albergue in the dark at 6:30pm, when it was still dark, but with Raresh's headlamp we were fine. Although better than yesterday, it was still rather rough. We reached the little town of Burgers soon after daylight and stopped in a bar for coffee, a croissant with ham and cheese, a bottle of water, and a banana. The croissant was very good. I mixed in one my packets of Emergen-C and away we went. Our next stop was a few kilometer before Zubiri where I ate my banana. I think it was not quite ripe since it was a bit firm and the skin was rather thick. Either that or it was a different type of ... read more

Saint-jean Pied de Port to Roncesvalles: I went bed last night and fell asleep fairly easily for once. I woke up around 6am, had breakfast and a couple of coffee, packed my backpack, and was out the door before 7:30. I went a block down the street to see if I could someone to take a photo of me at the Spanish Gate. A youngish guy said sure, took my photo, and ended walking with me all the way to Roncesvalles! His name is Raresh and he is from Romania. I have to say he was a bit of a slave driver, encouraging me not to stop long or often, but thanks partly to him, I made it all the way and good time and health. We will probably continue on together tomorrow. The sights along ... read more

Well, another night still adjusting to the time difference and the anticipation. I finally fell asleep at 3am after walking around the area for a while. Woke up at 8am feeling refreshed and ready to go. After a quick breakfast of coffee and a couple slices of bread and a slight reorganization of my gear, I walked the few blocks to the bus station and bought a ticket to Saint-jean Pied de Port at noon. After chilling for a while at the hostel, I packed up and headed to the bus station, two blocks away. Our bus had about 20 people on it, all pilgrims apparently. We drove through the city for quite a ways, then pretty much countryside after that, with a small or tiny town now and then. The road was quite steep ... read more

After a decent night's sleep at Antonio's house, I ate lunch then took a long walk down to and along the beach while Antonio took a nap. Soon after I returned we drove over to Tito Raphael and Tita Regla's for a visit. Around 9pm, we returned to the house for dinner. I had trouble getting to sleep again, I guess due to nervous tension and apprehension. After all, tomorrow I start my trip to Saint-jean Pied du Port and my Camino. Finally, around 4am I fell asleep. Other than Antonio, I was the first one up, around 8am. I showered, had some breakfast, packed my backpack and Manuel and I were on our way to Jerez for me to catch the first of three trains that would get me to Pamplona. The first train ... read more

The flight to Rota Sunday was still scheduled, so Saturday after lunch I loaded up my gear and got on the highway. Just over 3 hours later I exited I26 at exit 209a and continued following my printed directions. Although they sent me on a couple of residential streets, I did find the gate to the joint base Charleston. Unfortunately the base map I printed wasn't as accurate. After spending 20 minutes trying to find the air passenger terminal, or someone out and about, I returned to the gate. Even they weren't sure where the temporary terminal was, so I called the base operator and got good directions. They are building a new terminal so the temporary one was in a couple of trailers. I got checked in about 4:30pm for 5:55am flight and went ... read more

This initial entry is just to set the groundwork for the trip coming up... soon.  I know I'm a bit later than usual in taking our (my) annual vacation, but after moving from Pensacola to Simpsonville, South Carolina, and all the quasi-renovations plus yardwork (leaf and tree removal), and getting some dental work done, this is about as earlier as I could manage.  Now, for what really makes this "vacation" different than our usual is: 1) I am going alone... for the most part. Manoli will fly to Rota to spend time with her family in Chipiona and wait for me to arrive, so we can return together. 2) I am flying out on a military Space-available flight to Rota, Spain 3) I am going to walk the Camino de Santiago. Yes, the one from ... read more

This, our last morning in Delhi, and India, we slept in late… almost 7am! I worked on my blogs for a while, while Manoli packed our bags and watched some TV. Did I mention their TV programming? It seemed to us that even though they had hundreds of channels; 1 out of 3 was religious, usually with chanting and instruments; 1 out of 3 was a Bollywood sort of song and dance routine, and the rest were news or soap operas. We stored our bags downstairs and went looking for a supposed supermarket south of our hotel called Big Apple. After almost getting lost several times, we finally found it. The supermarket was about the size of a 7-11 back home. Oh well, it was fun. We returned to the hotel and Manoli wanted to buy ... read more

We left Jaipur at around 6am on our train, riding in AC3 chair cars this time. Fairly comfortable, with more leg room and better reclining seats than any airplanes I remember. The train pulled into Delhi Railway Station around 11am and our guide had two minivans waiting to take us to our hotel, Hotel Perfect again. The trip was almost boring this time since we’d been in Delhi before and had experienced the traffic numerous times. This time we had a more luxurious room on the 2nd floor, with a clean bathroom and intact shower. After a brief meeting telling us we had free time until the farewell dinner tonight, Manoli and I went back to the South Indian vegetarian restaurant Saravana Bhavan for lunch, expecting several others of our group to show up soon. Unfortunately, ... read more

Today we are going to visit the Amber Fort, and then Melaney and I are going to Eleday for several hours of playing with elephants. The same, or a similar tour was offered by Viator, but it was $99 for just one person, plus it seemed like it would conflict with our Intrepid tour, so I had figured I wouldn’t get to do it. However, our nice guide found the details for us and it turned out to be only about $60 each. Intrepid doesn’t believe in elephant rides and such, feeling they mistreat the animals, so our guide couldn’t actually book it for us, but he did give us all the details and arranged for a tuk-tuk to take us there. We all piled into tuk-tuks for the long trip out of Jaipur to the ... read more

We had no internet access in Tordi Garh, so I still haven’t caught up on my blog. After a pretty good night’s sleep at the Tordi Palace, we packed up, had breakfast, and climbed aboard our bus to Jaipur. This was the same bus we’d arrived in, having been parked there by the hotel the whole time. I don’t remember seeing the driver and assistant anywhere, but I assume they too spent the night at the hotel. The ride out to the main road was just as bad as it was coming in, and of course the main “highway” to Jaipur also left something to be desired. We arrived in Jaipur around 11:30 and pulled up in front of our new hotel for the next two nights, Ulsav Niwas. This hotel was similar in nature to ... read more
