We left Jaipur at around 6am on our train, riding in AC3 chair cars this time. Fairly comfortable, with more leg room and better reclining seats than any airplanes I remember. The train pulled into Delhi Railway Station around 11am and our guide had two minivans waiting to take us to our hotel, Hotel Perfect again. The trip was almost boring this time since we’d been in Delhi before and had experienced the traffic numerous times. This time we had a more luxurious room on the 2
nd floor, with a clean bathroom and intact shower.
After a brief meeting telling us we had free time until the farewell dinner tonight, Manoli and I went back to the South Indian vegetarian restaurant Saravana Bhavan for lunch, expecting several others of our group to show up soon. Unfortunately, we finished about the same time they arrived. Manoli wanted to go the Spice Market for some spices and one of the masala tins they store their spices in.Christie from Tasmania decided to join us in the tuk-tuk. About half way there the traffic was so bad that she decided to walk. Soon after she left, the traffic eased up and we were dropped off close to the market. Our guide had recommended we check out the Golden Horse Spice Shop, so we headed there. There was a guy there that spoke very good English who explained all about the various spices and teas and how they are used. Manoli selected 10 or 12 different spices and teas then we went to a nearby store to buy her a masala tin. All the stuff we bought was properly sealed and labeled so we would have no trouble with customs. After a short walk back to the New Delhi area, we took a tuk-tuk back to the hotel, again with the driver having to stop in the Karol Barg district to get directions. It seemed no drivers knew where the hotel was, either because of the lack of street signs, or because few of them could read the English address on our hotel’s business card.
After a brief rest to recuperate from the heat, we all went to a fairly posh restaurant for our tour farewell dinner. During dinner, Kaeren started making presentations. Apparently, he had bought a small brass plate for each of us, and then came up with an award for each which he had engraved on them. He lightly each presentation speech with such flourish he should have been the host of the Academy Awards. Manoli go the “Photography Award” and I got the “Chief” Award. After dinner, while our guide was on the phone, we took up a collection for him and presented it to him. Some of the group went out to continue drinking and celebrating, but we returned to the hotel for a good night’s sleep. Our return flight doesn’t leave until tomorrow night at 11:45, so we planned on sleeping late, then packing up our bags to leave in the baggage room and spend some more time at the nearby market.
