Jetlaaaaaaag........So the day started off by finding out a couple of people whom we know had an emergency landing in Winnipeg on there way here. The Arrived last night. (Smoke in the cockpit). Not a good way to begin the trip. We were greeted by our Tourguide and sure enough, the bus could hold 30 people but we were 6. Out of season or its just the way things are done. We promptly went to Zhoupuzhen to visit a small area that resembles the style of Venice. took a little skiff on the water and were treated with the lifestyle of the former ages. it was cold on the water, so we were budled up.The highlight of our day was lunch or so I thought..... read on..... We decided we would go and eat "hairy crab" ... read more

As I am writing the alarm on the safe is ringing. I musta hit the wrong button. Now I have to call the concierge. So I called and someone answered in Mandarin. "Help unlock my safe. The alarm is ringing."Whats safe" So I said "Get me help". Next thing a nock on the door. Guy comes in and asks in English whats wrong. Next he leaves and some one else comes 10 mins later with a gadget to open the safe."u know how to use?" yes. "I show u" lol Done. ( So 2 people for 1 task.)That about sums up the logic here. They have people to just push buttons, open doors, stand around etc... Upon landing we took the "maglev train" We were wisked away at an astounding 431 kms per hour on a track for ... read more

This trip will be shorter than usual. We will be flying out tomorrow direct to Shanghai to visit the World Expo. Packing light as usual. Plane won't hold much more luggage then a carry on. Then 3 days or so later hitting the Yangtzee River and Beyond. Actually this is really what I've wanted to do in Asia since I was knee high to a grasshopper.lol (Well not that little.lol) Oh by the way if you noticed in the pic, I am now a pilot. Siu Yee is brave and confident that we will make it across the ocean in this plane!!! I have my doubts. lol Just to be sure the family line continues, I have instructed the kids to fly at a later date on a bigger plane. The best part of this trip ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Lisboa September 21st 2009

Now I know why my spelling in the previous blogs are scewed. I am currently learning how to type on a Portugese keyboard. Previously it was a Spanish keyboard. Lol. We arrived at the Airport and you guessed it, our arranged meeting with our landlord did not happen. He arrived a little later, but thats ok. So, we tried to pull some dinero out of the machine that spits out money and it wouldn,t throw it up. Well I figured it was my debit card but it turns out there is a maximum per day you are allowed and I exceeded it. Our landlord is a fellow Quebecer from Quebec city. What a neat guy. Picked us up at the airport and brought us over to the 1 bedroom apt. We promptly went out to buy ... read more

Europe » Spain » District of Madrid » Madrid September 20th 2009

Great title eh? We arrived in Madrid expecting a parade and received the metro..... It was a chore trying to find our lodgings because everything did not make sense. The signs indicated something different from the maps we had until we found out that there is an above ground Metro and a below ground train, both converging together so we had no way of knowing which was which because Espagne isn,t English friendly everywhere. Once we analized, googled, and asked we were okay., Well, it took an hour or so and a cappo or two b/4 we found our lodgings but as usual the brilliant wife planted us directly into the center of where we needed to be. That being said, we toured the area and concluded minus the bull fights that Madrid is somewhat like ... read more

Europe » Spain » Valencian Community » Valencia September 20th 2009

Ahhh Valencia , the city of Medeival Spain. We ate and ate and ate. and drank vino. What can I say. The old city was spectacular, and we visited everywhere. Not as tourists, no.... as visiters from afar..... we experienced the essence of a traditional city that best represented the area. Old buildings, terasses, cafes, and the like. we felt like old montreal on steroids. It felt like the Plateau Mont Royal as well, with the price of the Vino and the food well below the price we would pay a LA LOCALE. That meant the flavor was that much more exquisite. What ever anyone tells you about Valencia, just tell them it is affordable. Onto Madrid.............. read more

Well, sorry for the delay. When you travel lite and have no wifi access, this is what happens. So a few blogs at once to catch up. Once we landed we promptly went as scheduled to our houseboat. NO ONE WAITING.... So we went for a cafe and had a LARGE dutch pancake and a cappo. BTW my pancake was sliced apple and raisons. So what. Lol. We tried phoning but kept getting a doctors office. So we were stuck. We knew what houseboat so we planted our derrieres outside and waited, and waited, and waited......... zzzzzzzzz. Ha ha only for an hour then our Irish contact showed up. Showed us the ropes and the toilet. The toilet.... I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED A TOILET LIKE THIS IN MY LIFE.. the pics as proof. Our freinds showed ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Denpasar November 30th 2007

Yup. Bali. Beach haven. We are lucky with the weather and just got in ahead of a 10,000 delegate Globel Warming Conferance that starts on December 3rd. We will miss most of the security that will be in place, with such measures as barbed wire across the roads etc. We still feel safe because whenever our vehicle goes into a parking lot security men scan the underneath for bombs. Ya never know if you are next. lol First day on the the beach was R&R. Second day was an excursion to some shops and temples in the Eastern part of Bali. It seems they believe alot in Black magic and Voodoo. I had a talk with our guide who seems quite adament that his family is cursed and his sister has been suffering blindness because of ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » North » Angkor November 27th 2007

Yep we made it to Cambodia. The procedures to get into the country were the worst we ever had to endure. We had to bring a passport pic with us, fill in a customs sheet, fill in an arrival and departure form, fill in a Visa request form. Then they had to process the Visa and take 40 USD from us. 1.5 hours later we then had to go through passport control. We met our guide around 2:30 and he first took us to the wrong hotel to check in. Once we cleared that up we asked him what was on schedule that day and he said that we had the rest of the day free. We asked what we could do and he mentioned a floating market boat ride. We decided that that would be ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Southeast » Ho Chi Minh City November 23rd 2007

Traffic chaos again. We started out the day 3 hours in the van towards the Mekong Delta where we had a Vietnemise cooking class. I did the learning and the cooking and Siuyee did the eating because I had my first bout of the runs. First off before we started eating the old man there toasted something which I am not sure what he said , but it was a rice wine and a licorice liquor combination. My stomach was hurting so I will spare you those details. Hrmph.... Next we went to a family run food factory where they made puffed rice cakes. The take the rice with the husks still attached and dump it in high heat into a wok that has a black sand on the bottom. They then when it finally reaches ... read more
