Valbeth - Valerie Williams

Valerie Williams Hi! I'm off to Argentina with my brother Donald in....eeeek...a week and a half! This will be my third time visiting Argentina, but the last time was thirty years ago (I actually spent the bicentennial 7/4/76 crossing the border from Brasil to Argentina). Also last time there was this little problem going on that is now referred to as "la guerra sucia." Many of the young people I had met 2 years earlier had disappeared and were never heard of again. It will be nice to visit this beautiful country in a more peaceful climate.

So, if you already know me I hope you enjoy this diary of my travels, and if you don't, I hope you get some help in planning your own trip!

At estancia in Tafí del Valle
Well, we´re starting on our home stretch- the last week! I am obviously hoplessly behind, and it will probably take me 3 months after I get home to actually get this thing into some kind of coherent shape. We are actually in Cafayate tonight in the province of Salta, and driving to Cachi tomorrow, and the city of Salta the next day. The scenary is just amazing-- high desert. We went to a very good vinyard today for lunch, so Don was happy. We actually ate llama. Not very common, actually. They produce a lot of wine in this area (2nd [View Full Entry]

El Calafate

South America » Argentina » Santa Cruz » El Calafate
Whew...I am so far behind I don´t know if I´ll ever catch up, but I´ll try in the next few days. In reality, it is the 19th of Feb, and I´m in Tucuman, writing a little after a post birthday asado nap, and before going out for a little walk and coffee. These are pictures of Lago Argentino which you can see from El Calafate, a day trip we made to the Upsala glaciar and Estancia Christina, some pictures from some hills outside town called Cerro Frias, and the town of El Calafate itself. Again, just too beautiful for words. The [View Full Entry]

Oh, boy…late again. Sorry for the slow updates folks, but I do have a couple of excuses. First, Villa la Angostura is so beautiful it´s hard to drag myself inside to sit in front of the computer. Our hostería sits right on the edge of lake Nahual Huapi which is surrounded by snow capped mountains. In fact, we basically haven´t been able to drag ourselves away from the hostería. All the excursions I had planned to San Martin de los Andes and other scenic towns in the area have basically been abandoned because it´s just too beautiful here. A bit like [View Full Entry]

Some pics of our last day in Ushuaia. It was picture perfect- Alejandro said they only get about 5 a summer like that. We went out on the sailboat "If" to Island H in the Beagle Channel, the last island in Argentina (there are still some islands that belong to Chile before Cape Horn) Island H is a kind of refuge with a lot of tundra plants even though it is close to sea level. Hola! A quick update just to load a few pictures we took on our last BEAUTIFUL day in Ushuaia before we leave on our last tour here in El Calafate. We leave for Bariloche and Villa la Angostura this afternoon. I should be able to catch up then! Other than sensory overload (you won´t BELIEVE the pictures of El Calafate), we are perfect. Lobos del Mar
Mountains
Don

Well, here we are at the end of the earth... Unbelievably beautiful in a totally different way from Iguazu. First, it´s cold! About 15 C- not so cold, but after Iguazu it feels like it, and it´s damp and VERY windy. Yesterday we visited a remote estancia where they have nesting colonies of penguins. About 1 hr 45 mins by car, then about 1/2 hour by zodiac. Just an incredible experience- the scenery is just breathtaking. The Andes aren´t so high here (1200m), but the relief between the mountains and the sea is amazing. There were only 9 people in our [View Full Entry]

¡Hola chicos! Well, this is going to be a very short update, because I am VERY tired...it is 10:38 here, 11:38 in Brasil, and who knows in Estados Unidos. Our flights here went basically without a problem. The Continental flight from Houston to BA was actually reasonably comfortable, with our own personal screens with a choice of movies and even video games. The only slight hitch was we were about a half hour late getting out of Houston, so a half hour late getting into Buenos Aires, and it took FOREVER to get thorough customs. It took so long to get our [View Full Entry]

More falls

Ready, set, pack.... Well, starting the countdown to departure and I have several goals: not forget anything important, and somehow squeeze the stuff I want to bring into a 22" rollaboard with a 16" duffle the slips over the top of the handle of the rollaboard. My daypack and/or a messanger bag as carry-on's. Let's see....5 weeks, temperatures between 40 and 95.... Ack! And I need my damn hiking boots... Plus, women don't run around in shorts in Argentina. They're okay for hiking and the pool, but not touring towns or cities. And we're staying in some fairly nice pla [View Full Entry]
