So since my last blog, we have been on a safari & it was something we will both remember forever. I would recommend doing it to anyone - seeing animals in their natural surroundings is just breath-taking! We booked through a contact Moses had - a happy chap called Titus who gave us a great offer. We also shopped around but no one could guarantee us our own private vehicle which Titus said he would & the prices varied so much & they want you to barter with them - all rather impersonal to be honest. So we felt happy with Titus, & he sat down with us to discuss every tiny detail as he was going to be our actual guide/driver. Also, his price included little extras like unlimited water, binoculars, a definite early morning ... read more

The few day leading up to Friday's celebrations (or as Moses & Loice were now referring to it as the Opening Ceremony - which I knew meant there was some serious praying in the pipeline) were spent finalising things, using the money that has been raised since I left, which Aaron brought over with him. After sitting down & planning what it would be spent on, such as varnish to protect the wood, utensils for the kitchen, cups & bowls for the children to use etc. we headed into Mombasa together to do the buying! It was a fun day as Aaron got to experience the town whilst we purchased the necessary items. I took him to the fruit & vegetable market where we were hijacked by a small, excitable Kenyan man who was over the ... read more

Hiya! Time has been flying & I am sorry it has been soooo long since my last update! I've been REALLY busy sorting out the final finishing touches at Hill Wheeler School, ready for the official opening that was celebrated this afternoon! So, since the last blog, Aaron has arrived here in Kenya! A convoy of myself, Moses, Keegan & Loice (& some of my luggage) went to collect him early last Saturday morning. His flight landed at around 9.30am, so we were up early - even though the airport is only half an hour away, with the morning traffic it takes about an hour. It was great to see him after so long but wierd as well as I've hardly spoken in normal English for so long!! I now talk like I'm constantly trying to ... read more

Well, I've just passed the half way point of my time out here in Kenya & I can't believe how fast the time has flown by. Last week started with some serious DIY as I started the painting of the two rooms. I decided to do it myself as it will save money which can be out towards trying to complete some small odds & ends that need doing. So, Monday & Tuesday I was scraping & sanding the walls before starting the first coat of paint. I would get there at around 9.30am, break for lunch at around 1pm & then do a couple more hours in the afternoon, finishing after 5pm. I began the work on my own but surely after a mere 20 minutes I had one of the young lads who attends ... read more

Just at the start of week three now & I have been really busy. Firstly, the work at Hill Wheeler School is coming along great. The plastering is completely finished & looks really good. I went to buy the wood at the end of last week so the builders are currently working on the tables & benches for the dining room as well as some framing for the doors & windows. The floors will be done last & then time for some painting!..which I'm really looking forward to as I want to help. I noticed one of the students at the school to be a really good artist - he draws all the time, even sneakily in lessons. So I asked to look at his work & then suggested that he could design some artwork to ... read more

Well, it's already been just over a week & the time has flown by! I'm doing really well & the weather is getting hotter by the day! Over the last week, I've been visiting schools with Moses & trying to plan what I can spend the money on that I raised running the London Marathon. It's difficult, as the schools range from concrete buildings with desks & chalkboards run by a team of staff, to mud huts with a few wooden stools & children using their laps to lean on, which are run by mere locals who volunteer their efforts. You start to think, where do I start? Or you wish you had enough money to contribute to each in some way. So, after sitting down with Moses & talking through possible areas we could use ... read more

The flight seemed to go on & on & on - I couldn't wait to land Nairobi as it is my first time in Africa. It was so great to step of the plane & see the landscape before me. I had a connecting flight to get so I hurried as we landed later than expected due to a delay at Heathrow. I only had just enought time to get my bags off the plane & drop them into the next flight from Nairobi to Momabsa. When I landed at Mombasa, I collected my bags so quickly as I couldn't wait to meet Moses. I walked through the arrival doors & scanned the mass of people, who were all shouting if I wanted a taxi. Then I saw Moses, and beside him his little boy Keegan ... read more
