My ferry for Gili Tranwangan (or Gili T) was at 10am so my transfer collected me from Echoland at 6:30am. I arrived at Gili T at 11am and stepped off the boat onto what can only be described as a paradise Island covered in travellers. The pure white coral sand beach was lined with boats collecting and delivering a variety of produce and travellers from all over the world. At the back of the beach was a concrete path lined with trees on one side and a plethora of restaurants, hotels, dive shops and bars. The strangest thing about this busy area was the lack of mechanical noise i.e. cars and motorbikes. The only forms of transport on this island were push bikes and horses....... I liked it already! After collecting my bag and meeting up ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Canggu August 10th 2011

After what was a thrilling and easy 2 weeks with everything being organised for me, I was released into the big wide world.. well almost. Lynn, Betsy, Bella and I all shared a taxi to southern Bali and Lynn, Bella and I went shopping, then for lunch and to the local beach near where Lynn was staying, before I jumped in a taxi for Echoland Hostel near echo beach in Canggu. This place was exactly what I needed; it was a quiet, modern hotel/hostel with friendly owners and close proximity to a beach with restaurants, surf and sand which wouldn't look out of place in a sandpit. My selected accomodation consisted of a 6 bed dorm room which was barely large enough to contain two 3 bed bunks and 6 lockers with a bathroom attached to ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud August 2nd 2011

After spending a semi-sleepless night in Tirta Gangga, with the suicidal fan which spent the night attempting to self destruct, we jumped into the minibusses and headed for Ubud in the rain! I think this was the first time I had seen rain since arriving in Indonesia. On the way, Nyoman had planned for us to stop at White sands beach but, due to the rain, I didn't expect this to happen. I was reminded that this is Indonesia, not England, and my expectations for rain and how long it lasted needed reallignment as it stopped not long after we set off. An hour later we arrived at white sands with the minibus heading down a road which would have been challenging for a 4x4. To the drivers credit, we arrived with us and the minibus ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Lovina July 20th 2011

After the epic morning up Mount Bromo, the trip to Lovina, which took us across a ferry onto the island of Bali, was a needed rest for the group and I. The highlight of this commute came when Betsy spotted, in the lonely planet book, an interesting type of female cleansing supposedly offered in Lovina and agreed to be the guinea pig! Without going into too much detail, the treatment involved steaming, aromatherapy oils and was not available to men...... ;-D Needless to say we had a good laugh about it and it was part of many comedy gags over the next few days. Upon arriving in Lovina in the evening, we freshened up and went out for dinner. My first impressions of Lovina was that it was a really quiet seaside village and, after a ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Java » Mount Bromo July 16th 2011

On Saturday the 9th of July, the group were packed, fed, watered and ready to go by 8:30am!! Not my usual Saturday morning but this is far from normal life. As I have come expect, no journey is short and this coach trip was no exception. The only difference was that the coach was comfortable and, at every possible opportunity, people would get on the coach and walk up and down the isles selling there wares. This consisted of mostly snacks and drinks but there were the occasional newspaper. After buying a large pack of coconut sugar coated peanuts (yum) and finding that the middle few layers were cardboard (D'oh), I learned a valuable lesson; check what you buy is what you think it is before the woman gets out of sight - It was only ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Java » Yogyakarta July 9th 2011

So then.... onto Yogyakarta (pronounced Jog-ja-karta or Jog-ja for short): After a couple of minibus rides and an interesting train journey in business class, which had a toilet which was a hole in the floor of the train (to put busines class into perspective), we arrived in Yogya in time to have a swim, a bite to eat and an early night to prepare for the following morning activities. At 3:30am the wakeup call arrived and my room had somehow lost power at some point during the nigh. This made for an interesting half an hour getting ready in the dark. From the hotel we drove to a village where we had to climb a steep trail in the dark to the top of a mountain. At the top of the mountain we witnessed the most ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Java » Pangandaran July 7th 2011

After an 11 hour journey on a minibus in heavy (and, again, completely mental) traffic from Jakarka to Pangandaran with the only highlight of the day stopping for lunch at this traditional Indonesian restaurant overlooking a valley of lush green rice fields, we arrived in Pangandaran. On the first day in Pangandaran, a few of us went for tour of the area on becak which can only be described a seat with a bike strapped to the back of it where some guy cycles you wherever you need to go (usually used as taxis). This allowed us to go off the main roads and venture down some of the back alleys and through some of the local estates. At the end of the becak tour we stopped off at the sea to watch the village people ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Java » Jakarta July 4th 2011

Jakarta After a total travel time of 28 hours from cheltenham to my hotel in Jakarta (which I might add was pure luxury) I managed to grab a few hours sleep before getting out into the big city of Jakarta which was where the culture shock really began! After sitting in about an hour and a half of traffic with people walking down the middle of the road begging and selling water, food and, strangely, large wooden boats and motor bikes, I arrived at my first hostel - sunny days hostel. This place was clean and had a communal pool and I thought to myself Jakarta doesn't seem too bad so I decide to go for a walk. After nearly being ran over by the mopeds who had decided that the pavement was a good option ... read more
