Geo: 25.729, -80.2374What a city. Its got to go down as one of my favourites. Today, was the end of the first leg of our cruise on the Norwegian Star. Booking separate legs rather than one continuous cruise had saved us a heap of money but meant a cabin change was required, moving from 10009 to 9673. We packed our things, leaving our luggage behind for transfer to our new cabin. Getting out on deck, it was one of those cities that left a lasting impression at first glimpse, a breathtaking love at first sight affair. Its an enormous city, countless towering skyscrapers dominate the shoreline. The buildings kiss the waters edge, towering over the glassy still waters of the bay nestled with anchored yachts, their grandeur illuminated in the orange glow of the morning sunrise. ... read more

Geo: 30.3041, -64.4016Our fifth consecutive day at sea. We've developed a general routine really. Wake, gym, breakfast, an activity, lunch, gym, relax, show, dinner, game, sleep. Ive never been very good at the whole relaxing thing. With a limited amount of activities, games, movies and space I'm getting a bit restless and irritable. I'm feeling a little disappointed and resentful towards the ship and cruise line to be honest. I'm not particularly fussy, but Norwegian just lacks the quality of Royal Caribbean and Carnival. We've met some lovely people at dinners, but noone our age to really have fun with. Its a very old crowd. We try and make the best of it and enjoy ourselves as much as we can. We've frequented the basketball court a lot. Theres never really anyone there. Theres two small soccer ... read more

Geo: 37.7463, -25.6668Land Ho! After four days at sea, the prospect of stretching our legs on dry land was most welcome. Especially so, to visit a new country and new culture, with the isles of Azores falling under the jurisdiction of Portugal. Specifically, our port of call was the colony of Ponta Delgada. We were up early, and off the ship soon after breakfast and the gangway was prepared, around 9am. We werent sure what to expect of this place; tropical islands? European culture? Warm sun? Beautiful beaches? Aqua blue water? Well yes, and no. The weather certainly did not play its part in that script. We were greeted by ominous, overcast clouds, scattered showers and high winds. The island felt tropical, still with a moderate temperature in the low 20s and 100% humidity. Hot and ... read more

Geo: 42.8679, -16.222Ocean as far as the eye can see in all directions. We have now had four full days at sea aboard the Norwegian Star. We've sailed west of the coast of Portugal into the Atlantic Ocean. Tomorrow we arrive in the Portuguese colony of Ponta Delgada on the volcanic isle of Azores. Its our first and only stop of the first leg of this cruise until we switch cabins in Miami. So what have we been doing the last four days? Not a whole lot of thinking, that's for sure. A welcome and relaxed approach. Lots of board games, Scrabble and monopoly aplenty. Lots of movies, the tablet is getting a work out. So are we though, that's for sure. After all the tasty treats around Europe, we are on a mission to lose ... read more

Geo: 55.6759, 12.5655Today, we board the Norwegian Star Cruise Ship. This means goodbye to the Continent of Europe. We have a total of 26 nights ahead of us on this ship. First, a 12 night cruise across the Atlantic Ocean from Copenhagen to Miami, USA with a stop off in Ponta Delgada. This is a small Portuguese island in the Atlantic, and our only stop for the first cruise leg. This will finally give us a chance to rest, relax, hit the gym and reflect on the trip to date. After 12 nights, we will change cabins in Miami for the second leg of the cruise. This will be 14 nights via Columbia, the Panama canal, Costa Rica and Mexico, finishing up in Los Angeles. We've got some pretty cool stuff planned for this cruise, snorkeling, ... read more

Geo: 55.6759, 12.5655That was an epic, grueling bus ride. It took not one, not two, but 15.5 hours from Brussels to Copenhagen. Ouch. We bid goodbye to Bert and Nele at Brussels Nord station around 11pm. By 11.45ish, we were boarding our Eurolines coach. To be fair, it was a reasonably comfortable coach with heaps of leg room. Overnight it was also a relatively empty bus which allowed us to stretch out and get about 4 minutes of uncomfortable sleep. The route was long, taking us via Eindhoven, Hamburg and eventually on a ferry from Germany to Denmark. The ferry ride took us around 45 minutes, time enough for a lunch break. As if the journey wasn't going to be long enough, it was made longer by surprisingly intense security getting off the ferry in Denmark. ... read more

Geo: 51.2094, 3.22523I was up at 5am. Just 90 minutes until the 2013 AFL Grand Final. Scarf on, time to creep downstairs. I paid $15AUD to stream it online, turning out to be an excellent investment. It meant reliable high quality channel 7 coverage of not only the match, but pre and post match entertainment. On Berts large PC monitor, it was just as good as watching it at home. What a result! Premiers 2013! Go Hawks! It meant Id be exhausted for todays trip to Brugge, but it certainly was the best kind of exhausted. All four of us set off for Brugge around noon. We stopped off at a clothes shop for Nele, before embarking on a walking tour of the city. It certainly was a pretty place; Historic, with cobblestone roads, arches, spires, ... read more

Geo: 49.6044, 6.13034Yesterday was the 5 month anniversary for Nat and I. No, not our relationship, but the time since we flew out of Melbourne on Anzac day in April this year. The last 5 months has been the trip of a lifetime. We've travelled by bus, plane, ship and train, often on the fly. We've seen and tasted some amazing things, enjoyed some amazing company and just had countless experiences in 27 countries so far. Today was to be our 28th, the small but Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. We set off this morning around 7am, boarding a bus to the train station without our prepurchased train tickets. A printer failure last night had left us empty handed. Instead Nele had recommended a student internet cafe, open at 7.30am. Thankfully, this worked out well. We were first ... read more

Europe » Belgium September 24th 2013

Geo: 51.2206, 4.39972An early start today, getting up at 7am in the work routine. It was a chilling (it was actually a frosty morning) reminder of the reality of waking up to a work routine. A reality Natalie and I are facing in another month or two. Anyone, enough of that. Today was alot more fun than work. We dropped Bert off at his workplace in Brussels. Thankfully Nele had a day off and freedom to guide us around Antwerp. First impressions of the city were good, pretty, architecturally different from Brussels, culturally more Dutch influenced than the French of Brussels. Our first stop was the new museum in Antwerp, the Museum Aan de Stroom, or MAS. Its a modern building, that certainly stands out in the dockside area of the city. Like its very design, the ... read more

Geo: 50.8371, 4.36761Its strange to think that 12 hours ago, we were waking up in Africa, on another continent. Leaving Carthage International Airport in Tunisia was relatively straight forward, but amusing all the same, for many reasons. First our cab driver overcharged us again really. If I never have to catch another cab Ill be a happy man. UWe arrived at the airport 2 hours before our flight to Belgium. The arrival sight of a massive queue to just get into departures then, wasn't the most uplifting. This was the stupidest and most pointless security check point I have ever seen. A couple of guys walked around with guns whilst everyone was herded into single file to put their bags through xray security and metal detectors just to get in the building. Bags went through with ... read more
