Geo: 34.0533, -118.245We met Brent and Emily downstairs at 9am for an included Continental breakfast and the best damn omelette Ive had for a while. We decided last night, given the weather forecast, along with early open and closing times of Disneyland, the nearby zoo might be a better option. With four of us, a 15 minute cab ride would only cost us about $5 each, having us at the zoo ticket office around 10am. Admission was just $16, and we were inside. We spent the next five hours or so strolling around. Overall, it was a decent enough zoo, without being breathtaking. There was a good variety of animals, to name a few, meerkats, flamingoes, snakes, lizards, giant tortoises, toucans, collobus monkeys, lemurs, giraffe, chimpanzees, gorillas, vultures, tigers, hippo, elephants and more. The website advertised a ... read more

Geo: 34.0729, -118.4Goodbye Norwegian Star Cruise Ship. Hello Hollywood, California! We were actually more than happy to say goodbye to our cruise ship of the last 26 nights. Simply put, it was way inferior to Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise lines, and just got really boring and repetitive. Disembarking was as predicted, painfully inefficient, just like in Miami. Its likely a combination of the haphazard policy of Norwegian and painful inefficiency of US Customs. Finally, we were off after about an hour and a half in queue. Heres where todays challenge started. We had no idea really how to get from the port in San Pedro, some 30 miles or an hour north to the fringes of Hollywood. Public transport is always my preference, but theres no such option at the port itself. So I decided ... read more

Geo: 22.88, -109.9Our last stop in Mexico was a memorable one. We arrived in the vicinity of Cabo San Lucas before the sunrise, around 7am. We wouldn't be docking at a port or cruise terminal today. Instead, we were anchored in the bay and tendered to the pier via the lifeboats. Once ashore, we linked up with todays tour group and boarded a comfy Catamaran boat. The waterfront area of the city was pretty in itself; dozens of bars, shops, restaurants, yachts and hotels on a tropical beach setting. Heading out from Cabo San Lucas, we were treated to an all included continental breakfast. The Mexican coffee was delicious. We cruised out by the famous Lovers Beach, past a large sea lion colony and on to the spectacular cliffs and rock formations of Lands End. We spent ... read more

Geo: 20.6509, -105.215Vaminos! A boat was waiting to take us from our cruise ship to Las Caletas Hideaway. This was once the private home of the famous film director John Hudson. Today, its a remote exclusive tropical beach hideaway, only accessible by boat. From start to finish, this was to be one of the best tours of our entire trip. We left around 8.30am. Transportation by boat took almost an hour, the journey being part of the experience. Finally, our destination draws near before us. Sandy beaches, palms, hammocks, huts, standing out against a steep jungle-clad backdrop of tropical rainforest, nestled in an isolated cove. Theres nothing for miles around, just the ocean, pelicans bobbing in the gentle swell of the waves, a warm breeze and the seemingly endless thick jungle beyond. We got a warm welcome ... read more

Geo: 15.85, -96.32Mexico had never really been a high priority as a potential tourist destination. I didn't really know much about it. A naive uninformed stereotype portrait of Mexico hung on the wall of my mind. In it a short, stocky man with huge moustache, wearing a sombrero rides a donkey, on a handcrafted patterned saddle, equipped with a bottle of tequila, rides across the arid desert, past various cacti, as tumbleweeds blow by. This couldn't be much further from reality, based on our experience of Mexico so far. Okay, we've seen a couple donkeys and cacti so far, but if you had shown me a picture of todays tropical beach and seaside town, surrounded by endless lush, dense, green tropical forest, I would never have guessed its location to be in Huatulco, in Mexico. Geo: 14.9067, -92.2607For the last time on our trip, we landed at a new country to explore; Mexico. Our point of arrival would be Puerto Chiapas, just northwest of the border of Guatemala. We were up for a big breakfast around 9, an omelette, followed by waffles. A big breakfast, as there would be no time for lunch today, due to an organised tour we had planned. By 10, we were exploring the small port, and soon thereafter boarding a coach for todays destinations, the Izapa Ruins, and the nearby town of Tapachula.First up Izapa, an ancient Olmec and Mayan archaeological site. The site is situated on the Izapa River, near the base of the Tacaná Volcano. The settlement at Izapa extends over 1.4 miles, making it the largest site in Chiapas. The site reached its ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica October 19th 2013

Geo: 9.98102, -84.8392Tropical Central America. Todays destination, Puntarenas, Costa Rica. We had a tour booked for the afternoon, but the morning was ours to explore the coast solo. We enjoyed a quick breakfast, applied a layer of mosquito repellent and sunscreen and headed ashore around 9am. Theres no cruise terminal or port here, just a pier, and just our single ship visiting for the day. Leaving the pier, and bypassing dozens of locals looking to cash in on tourists, it dosnt take long to work up a sweat. Its stifling, its not the moderate temperature of low 30s Celcius, but the 400% humidity that kills you. You feel as if youre breathing steam. We wandered the streets of Puntarenas for a time, eventually finding an ATM and withdrawing 10,000 Colones ($20USD). The town itself isn't particularly ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Panama » Colón October 17th 2013

Geo: 9.17802, -79.9475The Panama Canal is a loch-type canal approximately 80 kilometres long that unites the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans at one of the narrowest points of both the Ithmus of Panama and the American Continent. It allows passage through Central America to the Pacific without having to sail 21 days around South America. Its hard to imagine how the French conceived the idea for construction of the canal in the late 1800s. They dug out the foundations, much of it by hand, with minimal technology, in the foreign, wild, inhospitable, unexplored jungle of the Panama. Ultimately, their effort came too soon and failed. Living conditions were poor, and they were unprepared. Thousands died of illness, exhaustion, yellow fever and malaria. The Americans picked up where they left off in the early 1900s. With better technology, ... read more

South America » Colombia » Cartagena October 16th 2013

Geo: 10.4137, -75.5336Today I held a three toed sloth and saw a wild toucan. If that's not the definition of a good day I dont know what is. Overall, today was a good day; a brief but decent and enjoyable introduction to Columbia and Central America. It didn't start on a particularly encouraging note. We set off from the ship on a guided walking tour of Cartagena Old City around 9am. Our bus was small but comfortable, the tour itinerary, promising, our guide Nick, not so much. Nick was a local, and appeared friendly. Unfortunately, he seemed to speak with a lisp and stutter. Further, his English was poor. Not a good combination for an English tour guide. Sadly we were lucky to pick up one in ten words on the 30 minute drive from the ... read more

Geo: 19.2334, -74.4135Two more full days at sea. As if we haven't had enough of those. Its been rather relaxing and relatively uneventful. Our new cabin in 9673 is a nice one. Its similar to the last with a more spacious layout. The routine has been the same. Up around 8, gym, breakfast, a couple hours in the pool and spa, lunch, gym, relax, dinner, sleep around 10. The time in the pool has been nice, rocking with swell of the ship its much like a wave pool. The afternoons have come with a chilled out Caribbean style live band and barbeque. Yesterday, we had a view of Cuba off starboard as we sailed along. We've met two lovely couples the last two days, both Australian.
