The mountainous scenery guides us to our first stop, Mostar. We met a New Zealand girl, Emma, along the way who was traveling alone so joined us for a while. We had a young girl waiting for us at the bus station who took us to where we were to stay. She spoke very good English so I chatted with her and found that she grew up in Mostar, moved to Norway during the war then returned to her home that she no longer recognised. I didn't really know what to expect with Bosnia & Herzegovina. I figured there would be [View Full Entry]

Rohan and the evidence of war

We left the EU behind us when we crossed the border from Slovenia into Croatia only 7 km south of Piran. It was obvious straight away as the roads were bumpier, the buildings were crumbling a bit more and the border security guard was very suspicious as to why we were here, what we were doing, where we were staying and for how long. The trip from the border to our first stop, Pula, was great. We drove through heaps of tiny little Croatian villages, drove around some sweeping scenery and the view of the Adriatic was spectacular. Pula was a [View Full Entry]

A surprising little gem Europe » Slovenia
I was depressed that morning. For some reason, I didn't feel that bad when I left home but leaving Olney was harder. I had been living there, on and off, for about a year and maybe it was the thought that I wouldn't see most of those people again that did it. The whole bus trip down to Stansted Airport, I felt alone and a little sad. Rohan sent me a message saying he would meet me in Ljubljana that night so I then felt a bit better. I see the English soil disappear from the windows of the plane and [View Full Entry]

With aroma in the air Europe » Monaco
There is a feeling in the air when you arrive at the Monaco, Monte Carlo Train station. You walk down the marble hallways and sun hits you in the face as you walk onto the street. The air carries a certain aroma, it has the smell of money. Everywhere you look there are Ferrari's driving the streets, luxury yachts filling the harbour and a lot of high numbers on menus. Only a stones throw from Nice (which is isn't exactly a run down city itself) Monaco is, as they say, a playground for the rich and famous. The first thing we [View Full Entry]

Short but sweet Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice
It wasn't the sign that persuaded me that I was in Italy, it was a little road side stop. On our way from Innsbruck we stopped at a little service station that had a tiny store. The first thing I noticed were the products. No Homebrand chips or dodgy crap, it was like a specialty store. Little jars of food, sauces and spreads that makes the mouth water. I reluctantly bought a pre-made sandwich (I usually never do that unless I'm desperate) and it was heavenly. We all bought so many that they ran out so she had to make more. [View Full Entry]

The sign saying Bundesrepublik Deutschland welcomes me to Germany for the 3rd time this year and I wasn't sighing about either. Our destination was the scenic Rhine Valley. As we found our way the city of Koblenz, we followed the road that lines the Rhine River and it was a spectacular sight. Small village after small village sit waters edge. Where there is no vines covering the valley there are castles teetering on the edge. We stopped at a town called Boppard, just 13km from the famed St. Goar. Accommodation was sparce as there was a wine festival in town. We [View Full Entry]

Luxembourg is a small country. After crossing the border (which is the type of border crossing I like, at about 130km/h) we spent the next 15 minutes getting to the centre of the country, both geographically and politically. Luxembourg City maybe the capital but it has not a large city feel. You could almost confuse it for a average town if it were not for the amazing hisotry and sights. As we drove through the city, we got to the end of the highest point of town when the land disappears and valleys carves out the skyline. As an important city [View Full Entry]

Brussels is a heady mix of full flavoured (and extra strength) beer, dark rich chocolate, magnificent buildings and horrible city planning. When I past through last time I was not excited about going back but after a short stay I was glad to go back. It's an interesting city, not exactly the cleanest or the nicest smelling, but definately pleasent enough. It's not a place that makes an effort to impress but will surprise an un-suspecting visitor who not expecting greatness. The main square is definately a highlight with its gothic architecture and excellent cafes. The other great highlight [View Full Entry]

The line to go through security at the airport was enormous. In fact it was so big that there was even a waiting area to get on to the end of the line. We cruised through eventually and after a short flight, we arrived in Amsterdam. We caught the train into the centre and away we walked to our hostel. The smell of marijuana fills the air and sex shop after sex shop is an overwhealming sight. We hike through the seedy streets, cross the hundreds of canals while dodging thousands of push bikes. We dumped our stuff at the hostel [View Full Entry]

I met up with the lads in London after a delayed flight from Glasgow. I was lead to the hostel room and was hit with a smell that was so rancid it nearly made me throw up. The corner of the room was wet so there was constant smell of wet carpet that we nick named the COS (Corner of Stench) After seeing most of their desired sights the day before, we only saw a few extra things. One thing we did see that I hadn't seen before was Abbey Road. We did the obligitory walk across the road while dodging [View Full Entry]
